The modern Alpine A110 can return respectable fuel economy for a sports car, but fuel is only one part of the ownership bill. UK insurance groups are high, some cars may incur the annual expensive-car tax supplement, and servicing and specialist repairs need to be budgeted for. Available evidence identifies issues worth checking—particularly infotainment faults, rattles, gearbox behavior and a fuel-pump recall—but it does not establish a representative failure rate. Before buying, verify the individual car’s service history, recall status, warranty and current running costs.
What are the running costs of an Alpine A110?
There is no single reliable annual-cost figure for every A110. Model year, trim, mileage, location, driving style, condition, service history and track use all affect the bill. The most useful approach is to build a budget from the specific car’s records and current quotes, rather than treating a published test or old service price as a promise.

Auto Express reported an average of 34.8mpg over a 12,000-mile A110 long-term test, and said the car exceeded 40mpg on lengthy motorway journeys. That is one publication’s experience with its test car, not a forecast for every owner or every journey. Short trips, traffic, driving style, model and conditions can all change actual consumption.

Auto Express’s 2026 review-page figures list 42.2mpg for the A110, 40.4mpg for the GTS and 41.5mpg for the R. Those figures are tied to the versions and test basis represented on that page; they should not be assumed to match the 12,000-mile long-term test or an individual car’s real-world economy. Use them as model-specific reference figures, then estimate fuel spending from the mileage and fuel price you expect.
Insurance, vehicle tax and depreciation
Auto Express lists UK insurance groups 47 for the A110, 49 for the GTS and 50 for the R. These group numbers help describe the insurance risk classification; they are not premium quotes. The actual premium depends on the driver, address, cover, claims history and insurer, so get a quote for the exact vehicle before committing to a purchase.
Auto Express also says the cars exceed the £40,000 threshold for a £440 annual supplement in years two through six of ownership under the UK rules it describes. Do not apply that amount without checking the specific car’s first-registration date and the current rules: tax eligibility and charges can change, and registration date and powertrain class matter. Confirm the applicable rate using current official guidance for the vehicle.

For resale planning, Auto Express estimates that A110s retain 51–55% of their value after 36,000 miles or three years. This is editorial, market-based guidance rather than a guaranteed future value. Condition, specification, options and changes in the used-car market can move an individual car well outside that range. Treat depreciation as an estimate to revisit when comparing actual purchase and resale prices.

Auto Express’s 2023 used-car guide reports a service interval of 12 months or 12,000 miles. It also gives historical UK quoted prices for scheduled work. These are reference points from 2023, not current quotations; prices, labour rates and the work required can vary with the car’s age, service history and exact maintenance needs.

These line items are not a complete forecast of annual maintenance spend. Work due in a given year depends on the car’s age, mileage and prior servicing, and a car that has missed work may need more than a routine service. Ask an Alpine Centre or qualified specialist for a written, VIN-specific quote that itemizes the work currently due and the next scheduled maintenance.
Service plans and warranty extensions
Alpine Cars UK says its service plans cover planned work in line with the vehicle maintenance schedule, using genuine Alpine parts fitted by factory-trained technicians. The general page directs owners to a dealer for plan details; it does not state a universal plan price or terms. Request the current coverage, price, duration and exclusions for the car and ownership period you are considering.
Alpine also describes manufacturer warranty extensions of one, two, three or four years. The general page does not supply pricing or eligibility, so neither should be assumed. Ask the dealer to confirm whether the specific car qualifies, what the extension covers, when it begins and ends, and whether any service-history or mileage conditions apply.

Is the Alpine A110 reliable?
The available evidence is not sufficient to assign the A110 a representative failure rate or a definitive reliability ranking. Carwow describes owner reports ranging from trouble-free use to minor and major problems, and says there were not enough responses for a Driver Power rating. That is a qualitative summary, not a statistical measure of the odds that a car will fail.
Auto Express’s long-term test provides useful examples of issues to inspect, but it involved a particular test car. Its account records a sat-nav screen going blank, interior rattles and squeaks, and erratic gearbox behavior near the 12,000-mile service; the publication reports that these issues were addressed. Those observations do not show that every A110 has the same faults, or establish how frequently they occur across the fleet.
Independent fault guides and forum posts can suggest questions to ask, but they are not substitutes for fleet data or a diagnosis. One independent guide lists possible power-electronic-box failures, infotainment freezing, fuel-pump faults and brake squeal, with repair estimates. Its prices are not official Alpine quotations, and its methodology is not equivalent to warranty or fleet records. A Reddit commenter describes sudden fuel-pump failures and proposes a control-module cooling kit as a possible fix; that is an unverified account and theory, not a confirmed Alpine diagnosis or a measure of frequency.
What are common problems with the Alpine A110?
The reports point to several inspection areas, not a definitive list of universal defects. The distinction matters: an issue observed in one test car or reported by an owner can be worth checking without being common across all A110s.

Infotainment, navigation and phone connections
Auto Express reported a sat-nav screen going blank during its long-term test, while an independent fault guide lists infotainment freezing. Check that the display starts reliably, navigation works, and phone connections behave consistently. Look for warning messages and ask whether software work or repairs have been carried out. If a fault appears, have it diagnosed rather than assuming a restart or intermittent operation resolves it.
Interior rattles and squeaks
Rattles and squeaks were noted in the Auto Express test car. Listen over varied road surfaces and at different speeds, paying attention to trim and the cabin. A noise may be minor, but its source and repair cost cannot be established from a brief test drive alone; ask a specialist to investigate persistent or unexplained noises.
Gearbox behavior
Auto Express described erratic gearbox behavior near the service point on its test car. During a viewing, drive the car both cold and fully warm, including low-speed maneuvering and acceleration. Investigate warning lights, hesitation or inconsistent operation with an Alpine specialist; do not dismiss an abnormal symptom as normal character without a diagnosis.
Fuel-pump recall and reported fuel-system concerns
The clearest formal fuel-system concern in the available information is a recall reported by The Car Expert in December 2023. It affected 811 vehicles built from September 2017 to April 2022. Friction involving the fuel-pump impeller could reduce or interrupt fuel supply; the stated remedy was to replace the pump gauge module and/or reprogram the injection-computer software.

That campaign’s dates and reported vehicle count do not tell you whether a particular car is affected or whether recall work remains outstanding. Alpine’s UK recall page provides a VIN checker and says repairs for affected vehicles are free at a dealer. Use the manufacturer’s lookup for the specific car and obtain evidence that any applicable work has been completed. The forum theory about a cooling kit is not the stated official remedy; do not treat it as confirmed repair advice.
Other reported inspection prompts
An independent fault guide also lists possible power-electronic-box faults and brake squeal. These reports are prompts to examine symptoms, not proof that either issue is prevalent. Check for warning messages and listen for brake noise, then obtain a specialist diagnosis and written estimate if anything is abnormal. The guide’s estimated repair costs are not dependable Alpine quotes.

A pre-purchase inspection should establish the car’s documented condition and what ownership will cost next, rather than simply confirming that it starts and drives. - Check recalls by VIN. Enter the vehicle identification number in Alpine’s UK recall checker. If a campaign applies, ask for documentary evidence that the work was completed; arrange the free dealer repair if it remains outstanding.
- Test the electronics. Operate the infotainment and navigation, connect a phone, and check for warning messages. Ask about previous software updates or repairs if the system freezes, blanks or behaves inconsistently.
- Assess gearbox operation in different conditions. Drive from cold through to fully warm, including low-speed maneuvers and acceleration. Any warning, hesitation or inconsistent behavior merits investigation by a specialist before purchase.
- Listen and inspect the bodywork. Check for interior rattles, squeaks and brake squeal. Inspect low front bodywork and the underbody for damage. Have unexplained noises or visible damage assessed, with a written estimate for any repair.
- Price ownership for your circumstances. Obtain insurance quotes for the exact car and driver, verify vehicle tax using its registration date and current rules, and account for realistic fuel use. Check where the nearest Alpine Centre is and how practical routine visits would be.
- Confirm warranty and service-plan terms. Ask Alpine or the dealer to confirm remaining warranty, extension eligibility and current service-plan details for the vehicle, rather than relying on general product descriptions.
How to compare two A110s—or an A110 with another sports car
Compare like with like rather than relying on a headline price or a single fuel figure. A lower-priced car may have overdue scheduled work, an unresolved recall or less warranty remaining; a car with a higher asking price may or may not justify the difference through condition and documented maintenance. Put the same ownership assumptions against each option.
- Maintenance: Compare invoices and service records, then list the work due next and obtain quotes on the same basis.
- Recall status: Check each VIN and compare documented campaign completion, not seller assurances alone.
- Warranty: Record the remaining term and confirmed extension options for each specific vehicle.
- Insurance and tax: Use the same driver details for insurance quotes and check tax based on each car’s registration date and current rules.
- Fuel use: Estimate consumption from your own expected mileage and routes. Treat published figures as reference data, not a guarantee.
- Condition and access: Include inspection findings, bodywork condition and the practical distance to an Alpine Centre. A less extensive dealer network than mainstream brands can add time and inconvenience even if the quoted service price is acceptable.
That comparison makes the cost of ownership more concrete: it separates known near-term bills from uncertain future repairs and from costs that depend on the buyer, such as insurance and fuel.
