It came with gasoline, LP-gas or diesel power; the diesel was turbocharged. Horsepower depends on the fuel version and rating type: published figures distinguish drawbar power from belt or PTO power.
What years was the Allis-Chalmers D19 made?
Allis-Chalmers introduced the D-19 in 1961 and produced it through 1964. AGCO’s heritage catalog likewise lists model years 1961–1964. Allis-Chalmers’ history describes the model as introduced to meet demand for bigger, stronger tractors.
How much horsepower does an Allis-Chalmers D19 have?
Published specifications vary by engine and by the kind of power being reported. The Field Guide to Classic Farm Tractors, Expanded Edition (2020) gives separate drawbar and belt horsepower figures; TractorData lists claimed and tested figures in different categories. These values should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Version or source | Drawbar power | Belt or PTO power |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline D19; Field Guide (2020) | 64 hp | 72 belt hp |
| Diesel D19; Field Guide (2020) | 62 hp | 67 belt hp |
| TractorData test-reference figures; publication date not shown | 63.91 hp tested drawbar power | 71.54 hp tested PTO power |
The Field Guide’s “belt hp” and TractorData’s tested “PTO power” are distinct labels. TractorData’s figures are secondary test-reference values, not a general manufacturer rating. The available figures do not establish a comparable LP-gas horsepower rating.

Was the Allis-Chalmers D19 diesel turbocharged?
Yes. Allis-Chalmers offered the D-19 with gasoline, LP-gas and diesel engines, and the diesel was turbocharged. The manufacturer’s history calls the D-19 “the first agricultural tractor to utilize a turbo-charged diesel engine.” That is Allis-Chalmers’ historical claim, rather than an independently verified industry ranking. Allis-Chalmers history and the AGCO Allis Chalmers Heritage Catalog provide model information.
The cited reference describes six-cylinder, 262-cubic-inch engines. The Field Guide lists an eight-forward, two-reverse transmission with partial-range shift, a 14 mph top speed and a weight of 6,800 lb for the versions it covers. Confirm specifications against the tractor’s engine and configuration documentation before using them for a particular machine.

Where is the serial number on an Allis-Chalmers D19?
AGCO’s heritage catalog places the tractor serial number on a machined surface at the top rear of the transmission housing. TractorData describes a different location, so inspect the tractor and confirm the identification point using the appropriate manual rather than relying on one description alone. AGCO’s heritage catalog is a useful reference.

What should you check when identifying a D19?
- Record the tractor serial number and identify the engine fuel type before comparing specifications.
- Use documentation for the specific engine and configuration; horsepower labels such as drawbar, belt and PTO refer to different measures.
- If obtaining a service manual, verify its edition and whether it covers the D-19 diesel or the particular engine fitted to the tractor. Listings include D-19 and D-19 Diesel service coverage, but coverage should be checked against the listing details: eManualOnline D-19 manuals and Jensales D19 manual listing.
