For the 2026 U.S. models, the Alfa Romeo Giulia offers more horsepower from its standard four-cylinder and a slightly lower listed starting price; the BMW 330i has the better listed fuel economy. Both are rear-wheel drive as standard and offer all-wheel drive. If you’re shopping in late 2026, first clarify the model year: BMW announced an eighth-generation 2027 3 Series family on September 29, 2026.

They are comparison figures, not a final quote or official fuel-economy label for a specific car.
Is the Alfa Romeo Giulia better than the BMW 3 Series?
Neither is the better choice for every driver. The Giulia is the stronger starting point if you want more published horsepower from the base engine, prefer its design and character, or want to test Alfa Romeo’s Q4 all-wheel-drive option. The 330i is the stronger starting point if the listed fuel economy matters more, or if you want to consider a broader BMW performance range.
Keep the base-engine comparison like for like: the Giulia’s 280-hp four-cylinder against the 330i’s 255-hp four-cylinder. The BMW M340i is a higher-performance alternative, not the equivalent of the 330i. It has a 386-hp 3.0-liter inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid technology, according to BMW’s 2026 specifications.

Which is quicker and more powerful?
Giulia: higher base-engine output
Alfa Romeo lists the 2026 Giulia’s aluminum 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four at 280 hp and 306 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. The company estimates 0–60 mph in 5.1 seconds. That acceleration time is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test result. Alfa Romeo also lists a 149-mph top speed, Brembo brakes, and a carbon-fiber driveshaft.
BMW: a choice of performance levels
BMW lists the 2026 330i at 255 hp and gives it a 5.6-second 0–60 mph time. The 330i xDrive is listed at 5.4 seconds. BMW’s figures make the 330i less powerful on paper than the Giulia’s standard engine, while the available M340i moves the comparison into a different performance tier.

Which is cheaper, the Giulia or 3 Series?
TrueCar’s September 2026 comparison lists starting MSRPs of $48,245 for the Giulia and $48,850 for the BMW 3 Series, a $605 difference in the Giulia’s favor. Treat that as a modest difference between published starting figures, not a prediction of what any buyer will pay. Equipment, drivetrain, dealer offers, taxes, and destination can change the actual comparison. Request quotes for the same model year and similarly equipped versions.
BMW’s own 2026 page lists the 330i starting at $48,000 and the 330i xDrive at $50,000. Those manufacturer-listed figures do not match TrueCar’s comparison figure for the BMW 3 Series, so check the exact vehicle and price basis in any quote rather than assuming the two sources describe identical configurations.

Which gets better gas mileage?
TrueCar’s September 2026 comparison lists the 330i at 28 city / 35 highway mpg and the Giulia at 24 city / 33 highway mpg. On those figures, the BMW has the advantage. However, BMW’s 2026 U.S. 3 Series page reviewed here says 330i fuel economy is TBA. Verify the final label for the precise trim and drivetrain before treating the third-party comparison as a confirmed figure for a particular car.
Do both sedans have all-wheel drive?
Yes. The Giulia is rear-wheel drive as standard and offers Alfa Romeo’s Q4 all-wheel drive; BMW offers xDrive all-wheel drive alongside rear-wheel-drive versions. Compare the actual AWD configurations and their equipment and prices. A rear-wheel-drive base price does not tell you what the all-wheel-drive version will cost.

How do their sizes and cargo areas compare?
The Giulia is shorter than the 330i: 182.6 inches versus 185.9 inches. It is wider by the stated body-width measurements—73.2 inches without mirrors compared with the BMW’s 71.9 inches—and slightly lower. Alfa Romeo gives the Giulia’s trunk capacity as 13.4 cubic feet. The BMW source cited here does not state a directly comparable trunk-volume figure, so the figures do not establish which car carries more luggage. If cargo fit matters, bring your usual bags to a dealer and try them in the car.

That depends on whether you are comparing a 2026 car with the existing generation or the announced 2027 family. On September 29, 2026, BMW announced an eighth-generation 3 Series with gasoline models using 48V mild-hybrid technology and an all-electric i3. BMW’s announcement describes the i3 50 xDrive at 463 hp and an estimated range of up to 468 miles. Those are announcement figures, not independently tested results. The announcement does not state an on-sale date, so it does not establish when a dealer will have cars available. If buying in late 2026, ask the dealer to identify the model year and generation on the quote, then compare equipment, destination, incentives, and expected delivery for the exact cars available. Do not compare the announced 2027 prices directly with a 2026 quote without accounting for those differences.
Which one should you test-drive?
- Start with the Giulia if base-engine output, its design and character, or the Q4 AWD option is central to your choice.
- Start with the 330i if the listed mpg advantage is more important, and include xDrive if you need all-wheel drive.
- Consider the M340i if you want a more powerful BMW than the 330i; it is a separate performance step in the 2026 lineup.
- Compare exact model years if shopping near the 2027 transition, and confirm the car’s generation, equipment, price, and availability with the dealer.
The figures available here do not establish which car is more reliable, cheaper to maintain, safer, or more comfortable. Those priorities need evidence specific to the versions you are considering, and comfort in particular is best judged with a drive in the actual configuration.
