The mining-truck fuel savings reported by Michelin are not attributed to airless wheels. Its 2024 claim concerns the XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY, a conventional mining tire designed to reduce rolling resistance. Michelin’s TWEEL is an airless wheel-and-tire assembly, but its published applications are compact loaders and light equipment—not large haul trucks.
What Michelin’s mining-truck savings claim says
On September 24, 2024, Michelin announced the XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY and said it was expected to be commercially available in 2025. Michelin reported up to 3.6% better fuel efficiency than its XDR 250 C tire, estimating about 5,300 gallons of fuel saved per truck annually. The company converted that to about $24,000 per truck using diesel at $4.45 per gallon, the U.S. West Coast average it cited for July 15, 2024. For a 50-truck fleet, Michelin estimated almost $1.2 million in annual savings and a 2,600-ton reduction in CO₂ emissions. These are manufacturer estimates, not independently verified mine-site results. Michelin’s announcement and test notes give the underlying assumptions.
The fuel-efficiency comparison came from Michelin’s internal testing at its CEMA test center: 50/80R57 XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY versus 50/80R57 XDR 250 C tires on a CAT793 truck in flat conditions. Michelin says actual results may vary. Its emissions calculation uses 2.66 kg of CO₂ per liter of diesel. Route profile, payload, speed, surface, operating practices and fuel price can all affect what a mine would realize; the announcement does not establish a universal saving for every truck or site.
Why this is not an airless-wheel claim
Michelin describes TWEEL as a single fitted wheel and airless radial tire unit, built with a tread, high-resistance poly-resin spokes and a reinforced steel hub. Because it has no inflation pressure to maintain, it can avoid pressure checks and puncture-related downtime in applications for which it is designed. Michelin’s published product range, however, is for compact and skid-steer loaders and light construction or handling equipment—not mining haul trucks. Michelin’s TWEEL applications page does not document a large-haul-truck fitment.

Michelin also offers the X Tweel TMF for truck-mounted forklifts. That specialized product is another example of application-specific fitment, not evidence that an airless tire is available for a mining haul truck. The TMF product page lists its own dimensions and fitment details.
Where airless designs may reduce tire-related costs
For equipment suited to an airless assembly, avoiding flats and premature replacement can mean less downtime and lower tire-related expense. Michelin’s general airless-technology article cites an internal “scrapyard” study conducted from 2012 to 2015: it examined 135,000 tires and estimated that 20% of tires—equivalent to 200 million globally—were scrapped prematurely because of flats or irregular wear. Michelin extrapolated the sample using an estimate of one billion end-of-life tires a year worldwide. This is an old, manufacturer-derived global estimate; it is not mining-truck data and does not quantify savings for a haul-truck fleet. Michelin’s airless-technology article describes the estimate and its basis.

How mining operators should compare tire options
For a mine fleet, the practical comparison is not “airless versus pneumatic” unless both options are rated for the same truck and duty. The available Michelin material does not establish an airless haul-truck option. Compare tires that actually fit the equipment and are specified for the work, then assess performance under like-for-like conditions.
- Fitment and duty: Confirm the tire is approved for the truck, wheel, payload and operating cycle.
- Rolling resistance and fuel use: Compare measurements or estimates made on the same route, surface, load, speed and operating pattern.
- Traction, heat and pressure: Check how the tire manages the site’s grades, turns, temperatures, inflation monitoring and load-speed demands.
- Tire life and productivity: Include service life, downtime, payload moved and cycles completed—not fuel alone.
- Fuel-cost assumptions: Convert fuel savings using the mine’s own delivered fuel cost and state whether the result is measured or modeled.
A separate Michelin example for underground mining
Michelin’s X MINE Defend is described for underground mining trucks and quarries. Its product page presents a 29.5R25 example for an underground truck with a 42-ton payload: Michelin says the tire could carry up to 18% more material during an eight-hour shift. In the displayed comparison, the XTXL completes 24 cycles and moves 1,008 tons, while X MINE Defend completes 28 cycles and moves 1,186 tons. Michelin also claims 4% longer tire life. These are product-page claims for the stated example, not an independent comparative study or a result that should be applied to other trucks and sites without validation. Michelin’s X MINE Defend page also describes mine-focused temperature and pressure monitoring and productivity consulting services.

What to verify before budgeting
The XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY announcement said commercial availability was planned for 2025; that announcement alone does not confirm current availability or specifications. A fleet evaluating it should verify present fitment, product availability and technical data with Michelin or its dealer, then compare site-specific performance against the tires currently in use. No published figure here establishes guaranteed savings for an individual operation.
