Airbiquity and HARMAN announced an end-to-end intrusion detection system for connected vehicles on October 31, 2016, at TU-Automotive Europe in Munich. HARMAN’s ECUSHIELD software monitored and logged suspicious activity inside the vehicle, while Airbiquity’s Choreo platform and Software & Data Management services collected that data in the cloud, generated alerts and reports, and supported software updates intended to mitigate threats.
What the companies announced
The partnership joined two parts of a connected-car security workflow rather than presenting competing products. HARMAN supplied the embedded, in-vehicle security layer. Airbiquity supplied the communications, cloud data-management and response layer.

HARMAN Vice President of Automotive Cyber Security Saar Dickman described the combination as an “end-to-end IDS solution,” pairing ECUSHIELD’s embedded capabilities with Airbiquity’s back-end software and data-management services. Airbiquity President and CEO Kamyar Moinzadeh said the integration was intended to strengthen secure connected-vehicle services for automakers.
How the intrusion detection workflow was described
1. Monitoring inside the vehicle
HARMAN’s ECUSHIELD software was described as continuously monitoring internal vehicle networks. When it identified a security intrusion, it recorded information locally so the event could be examined and managed rather than disappearing when the vehicle lost connectivity.

2. Sending security data to the cloud
Airbiquity’s Choreo service delivery platform and Software & Data Management offering were described as receiving information from vehicles and aggregating it in cloud systems. Centralizing events from multiple vehicles gives an automotive customer a place to review security information across a connected fleet.
3. Alerts, reports and customer response
The cloud-side workflow was described as automating alerts and reports. Those outputs were intended to help automotive customers assess threats and decide what security action to take. The announcement does not specify alert thresholds, supported vehicle networks, response times or the format of the reports.
4. Secure software updates
The companies also described secure transmission and installation of vehicle software updates from the cloud. Updates were presented as a way to mitigate future threats and restore affected systems or components. That is a stated capability of the proposed workflow, not evidence that the announcement demonstrated a successful remediation.

HARMAN’s boilerplate said more than 25 million automobiles on the road used its audio and connected-car systems. That was a company-reported background figure, not a count of vehicles using this intrusion detection system and not an effectiveness metric.

Why the architecture matters
Putting detection in the vehicle allows security monitoring to occur close to the systems being protected, including when connectivity is intermittent. Cloud aggregation adds fleet-wide visibility and gives an automaker a mechanism for coordinating analysis, notification and software changes. The division also reflects different operational needs: local software must observe vehicle networks, while backend services must manage data and controlled updates across many vehicles.
In practice, the value of such an architecture would depend on implementation details that the release did not provide—what ECUSHIELD could observe, how events were authenticated and prioritized, how update packages were validated, and how customers handled alerts.

Bottom line for readers
Airbiquity and HARMAN’s October 2016 announcement described a two-part connected-vehicle IDS: ECUSHIELD detected and logged activity in the car, and Airbiquity’s cloud services collected those events, produced alerts and reports, and supported secure updates. It is best understood as a historical description of a proposed enterprise automotive-cybersecurity solution, not as evidence of current availability or independently verified protection.
