AgOpenGPS (AOG) can add GPS guidance and automated steering to many tractors, but it is a do-it-yourself system rather than a universal bolt-on kit. The right conversion depends first on whether the tractor is steer-ready or has compatible steering hardware; then you choose the actuator, control electronics and positioning setup. Autosteer follows guidance paths while the operator remains responsible for the machine—it does not make a tractor a fully driverless vehicle.
What AgOpenGPS does—and what “autosteer” means
AgOpenGPS is open-source Windows software used with AgIO and compatible hardware. GNSS provides the tractor’s position; control electronics connect positioning and sensor inputs to a steering actuator. That actuator turns the steering wheel or controls a hydraulic steering system. The software supports guidance along AB lines, curves and contours. The AgOpenGPS project repository describes the software, while the official documentation explains its setup and capabilities.
Guidance and automatic steering are different levels of use. With lightbar guidance, the display indicates where to steer and the driver turns the wheel. With autosteer, a motor or valve steers the tractor along the selected path. Section control and rate control are additional capabilities that need their own equipment and configuration; they are not automatically included in every autosteer build.
Choose a steering route that matches the tractor
Start by checking the tractor’s existing steering equipment and whether it is steer-ready. The official steering options guide describes several routes. They are alternatives, not a single parts list.

These options differ in compatibility, wiring and installation—not just in actuator choice. Identify the tractor’s steering system before ordering parts. A motorized wheel, a hydraulic valve block and a CANBUS connection are not interchangeable solutions.
What hardware a conversion needs
The parts depend on whether you want guidance only or automatic steering, and on the selected steering route. The official hardware quickstart guide gives a starting point, but it is not a universal shopping list.

For lightbar guidance
- A Windows tablet or other suitable Windows device running AgOpenGPS and AgIO.
- At least one ZED-F9P GNSS receiver, with an antenna and connection cable.
For standard autosteer
In addition to the guidance setup, a typical build adds an AgOpenGPS control PCB, a steering actuator suited to the tractor, and a Teensy 4.1 controller. Supporting components vary with the steering route and receiver configuration. Some setups may require a Cytron motor driver or wheel-angle sensor; others may use the tractor’s own sensor. A single-antenna arrangement may use an IMU, while other receiver configurations can differ.
The quickstart names the ArduSimple ZED-F9P GNSS receiver as core guidance hardware. That is a component example, not a complete conversion kit or a guarantee that a particular receiver, antenna and board combination will work with every tractor. Check the detailed hardware and steering instructions for the chosen configuration before buying expensive parts.

RTK and positioning: optional correction, not a universal accuracy promise
RTK correction is optional in the official setup guidance, though the project recommends it for improved positioning. The documented routes include using an existing RTK station or setting up a base station; the getting-started guide also describes a built-in NTRIP client. RTK availability and setup therefore depend on the operator’s equipment and correction source.
Project documentation refers to centimeter-level accuracy, but that description should not be read as a guaranteed result for every tractor, receiver, antenna placement, correction source or field condition. The documentation cited here does not establish a configuration-specific independent field measurement. Treat achievable accuracy as dependent on the complete installation and correction setup.

Plan the build in the right order
- Identify the tractor’s steering equipment. Check whether it is steer-ready, has a compatible CANBUS system or integrated valve, and whether its steering-angle sensor can be used.
- Select the steering approach. Match the tractor to CANBUS, a motorized steering wheel, a DIY motor, a hydraulic valve block or a compatible Danfoss integrated valve.
- Choose the control and positioning components for that route. Confirm the PCB, controller, GNSS receiver, antenna, sensors and any motor driver against the relevant configuration instructions.
- Decide which capability level you need. Lightbar guidance does not steer the tractor; autosteer adds an actuator. Section and rate control require further equipment and configuration.
- Review the detailed setup information before purchase. The official quickstart specifically directs users to the detailed hardware material because requirements vary by build.
A 2025 article in Agronomy Research, “AgOpenGPS – Retrofitting Autosteering,” also indexes a retrofit component list including a steering-angle sensor, GNSS antenna and circuit board, hydraulic control unit, Windows-based laptop, USB hub and main control module.
