They offer distinct strengths: the Si is the lower-priced manual-focused option, the WRX brings standard all-wheel drive and the most power of the three, and the Elantra N is a more powerful front-drive contender with lower listed fuel economy. This is a focused comparison, not a ten-car ranking: current, comparable pricing and specifications are not established here for ten distinct sedans.
What counts as affordable here?
This guide uses a U.S. new-car starting-price ceiling of less than $40,000, the frame used in Car and Driver’s under-$40,000 sedan ranking. A starting MSRP is not an out-the-door price. It may exclude destination, taxes, registration, dealer charges, options and color upgrades; the exact inclusions vary by source and vehicle.
Car and Driver says its ranking draws on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo capacity, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment. That is the outlet’s stated editorial method, not a universal standard or a guarantee that every buyer will rank the cars the same way.

How to choose between them
Choose the Civic Si for a lower starting price and a balanced daily driver
Car and Driver places the Si at $32,790 with 31 mpg combined and describes its appeal as a blend of performance, practicality and affordability. Honda identifies the 2026 Si as a compact sport sedan with 200 hp. Those figures make it the lowest-priced of the three candidates by the cited starting prices, while its fuel-economy figure is the highest one established in this comparison.
Choose the WRX if standard all-wheel drive matters most
The WRX is the only one of these three for which the cited source specifically confirms standard AWD. Subaru lists 271 hp and a $32,495 starting price for the 2026 model. That is the strongest verified combination here for buyers who want AWD and higher published power, but Subaru’s cited page does not establish a combined fuel-economy figure for this comparison.

Consider the Elantra N for a more performance-focused front-drive option
Car and Driver lists the Elantra N at $36,595 and 23–24 mpg combined; Edmunds gives a broader MSRP range of $35,300–$40,950 and ranks it first among the sport compacts in its list. Because those price presentations differ and Edmunds’ range reaches beyond this guide’s ceiling, check the precise model, equipment and current transaction quote before treating a particular Elantra N as under $40,000.
Check the real price before you buy
Compare like with like: the same model year, trim, options and destination treatment. A starting MSRP is only a reference point, not a delivered-price quote. American Honda’s 2026 Civic Sedan pricing illustrates why the distinction matters: its listed MSRP excludes destination, taxes, license, registration, options and color upgrades, and Honda says dealer prices may vary.

Why this is not a list of ten
There is not enough comparable, current evidence here to name ten distinct 2026 sports sedans with verified prices and specifications. Edmunds’ sport-compact coverage identifies the Volkswagen Jetta GLI as a contender, but a current price and specification source was not established for it here, so it is not assigned a figure or treated as a fourth verified pick. Extending the list with unverified prices or ordinary sedans presented as performance models would make the comparison less useful.
