The strongest alternatives to the Tesla Model X depend on what you need from a three-row EV: the Rivian R1S emphasizes utility and performance, the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 offer lower starting prices, and luxury choices include the Volvo EX90, Lucid Gravity, Cadillac Vistiq, Escalade IQ and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. Two options broaden the list but are not direct size-and-body-style matches: the Tesla Model Y L is smaller, while the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is an electric van.

Use the figures below as a shortlist, not a definitive ranking. Prices and range estimates apply to particular model years or configurations, and published specifications are not a substitute for checking the exact vehicle available near you.

At a glance: 10 alternatives to the Model X

Vehicle What it offers Published price and range Main qualification
Rivian R1S Premium three-row electric SUV with an emphasis on power and utility 2026 Premium: $85,885 starting price including destination; 329 miles estimated range. Available long-range battery: 410 miles listed. Figures are from Cars.com; confirm trim and price. Source
Kia EV9 Seven-seat family SUV 2026 starting price: $56,545. Cars.com lists 230 miles for the base rear-wheel-drive configuration. Compare higher-range trims if you regularly drive long distances. Source
Hyundai Ioniq 9 Three-row SUV with a cited base configuration rated at 335 miles $60,605 starting price and 335 miles estimated range in Cars.com’s comparison; Hyundai lists 311–335 miles by trim. Range depends on trim. Cars.com; Hyundai
Volvo EX90 Six- or seven-seat luxury SUV Up to 305 EPA-estimated miles for AWD models with 21-inch wheels; up to 291 miles for RWD with 21-inch wheels. Volvo lists lower range with other wheel sizes; maximum towing capacity is 4,850 pounds. Volvo
Lucid Gravity Luxury SUV with a manufacturer-advertised range of up to 450 miles Order price from $79,900; up to 450 EPA-estimated miles, varying by configuration. Verify the seating and trim configuration; the published figures span the lineup. Lucid says its comparison information is current as of March 2026. Lucid; comparison details
Cadillac Vistiq Three-row SUV for up to seven; optional captain’s chairs make it a six-seat layout 2026 trim prices from $77,395; up to 305 EPA-estimated miles with the standard 11.5 kW onboard charger, or 300 miles with the available 19.2 kW module. Cadillac lists Level 2 AC charging capability. Cadillac
Cadillac Escalade IQ Full-size, seven-passenger luxury SUV $127,405 starting price; 465-mile range estimate. The range is Cadillac’s estimate, not an EPA estimate. Cadillac
Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV Luxury SUV with an optional third row 2026 model: from $91,300 and 312–317 miles of estimated range, according to Car and Driver. Edmunds’ older overview described the optional third row as less roomy than those in the EVs it covered; verify the current configuration. Car and Driver; Edmunds
Tesla Model Y L Six-seat Tesla-family option at a lower price than the Model X 2027 starting price: $63,630; 332 miles estimated range. Cars.com reports 31.2 inches of third-row legroom and 89 cubic feet of cargo space with rows folded—16 cubic feet less folded cargo volume than the R1S. It is a smaller vehicle, not a like-for-like Model X replacement. Source
Volkswagen ID. Buzz Three-row electric van with a tall, boxy body and cargo space behind the third row Not stated for the current model year in the cited source. An older Edmunds/AP overview gave a 234-mile maximum range for the model year it covered. Treat that as historical context, not a current specification. Edmunds

Cars.com’s comparison figures are editorial data, while the Volvo, Lucid and Cadillac figures come from manufacturer pages. Those sources do not represent a single standardized road test, so do not treat every range or price as directly comparable.

Which alternatives are the closest Model X cross-shops?

The R1S, EV9, Ioniq 9, EX90, Gravity, Vistiq, Escalade IQ and EQS SUV are the direct SUV candidates in this group. They cover a wide spread of price, luxury, performance and utility. The Model Y L and ID. Buzz can still make sense, but for different reasons: the former trades down in size, and the latter trades SUV styling for van practicality.

For utility, performance or off-road-minded use

The R1S is the clearest fit for shoppers who want a premium three-row SUV with strong published power and range figures. Cars.com lists 533 hp and 329 miles of estimated range for the 2026 Premium, with a long-range battery option listed at 410 miles. Volvo lists a maximum 4,850-pound towing capacity for the EX90, but that figure should not be generalized to other vehicles or trims.

For a lower starting price among the listed SUVs

The EV9 starts at $56,545 in the cited 2026 comparison, and the Ioniq 9 at $60,605. The EV9’s listed base rear-wheel-drive range is 230 miles, while the Ioniq 9’s cited base configuration is listed at 335 miles; Hyundai’s own range varies from 311 to 335 miles by trim. Compare the exact versions, since a lower entry price does not mean the configuration has the range or features you want.

For luxury and a bigger-vehicle experience

The EX90, Gravity, Vistiq, EQS SUV and Escalade IQ are luxury-oriented alternatives, but they differ in seating configurations and in how their range figures are stated. The Escalade IQ is the full-size outlier: its $127,405 starting price and Cadillac-estimated 465-mile range place it in a distinctly higher-cost, larger-vehicle category.

How usable is the third row?

A published six- or seven-seat capacity does not tell you whether the third row suits your passengers. The available figures establish seat counts for some vehicles, but they do not support a universal comfort ranking. For the Model Y L, Cars.com reports 31.2 inches of third-row legroom; that measurement does not by itself establish comfort for a particular passenger or trip length.

Before choosing, check the actual vehicle and configuration you intend to buy. Bring the people and child seats that will use it regularly, test access to the rear seats, and see what cargo space remains with the third row in use. This matters especially if you often carry both a full passenger load and luggage.

How to compare range, charging and price fairly

  • Match the range to the exact vehicle. Range can change by trim, drivetrain, battery and wheel size. Volvo’s listed EX90 figures vary by drivetrain and wheel size; Hyundai gives a 311–335-mile range by Ioniq 9 trim; Lucid’s up-to-450-mile figure varies by configuration.
  • Keep estimate types distinct. Cadillac labels the Escalade IQ’s 465 miles as a Cadillac estimate. The Vistiq figures are EPA-estimated, and the Gravity’s advertised maximum is also described as EPA-estimated. Do not treat these differently labeled values as equivalent test results.
  • Compare the price of the configuration you need. A starting price may describe a different drivetrain, battery, seating arrangement or equipment level from the one you want. Check current local inventory and manufacturer build-and-price details for the model year you are shopping.
  • Consider home charging before buying. Check the vehicle connector, your home’s electrical capacity and installation requirements before selecting a Level 2 charger. Cadillac describes Level 2 AC charging capability for the Vistiq and lists a GM PowerUp 2 J1772 home charger for the Escalade IQ; that does not establish compatibility for every vehicle in this list.

When the Model Y L or ID. Buzz makes more sense

Tesla Model Y L: a smaller Tesla-family option

The Model Y L is worth considering if you want a six-seat Tesla-family vehicle and can accept less space than the Model X. Its reported 89 cubic feet of cargo space with rows folded is 16 cubic feet below the R1S figure in the cited comparison, and the third row is smaller. Do not assume that the Model Y L offers the same passenger or cargo capacity as a full-size three-row SUV.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz: prioritize people and cargo over SUV shape

The ID. Buzz is an electric van, not an SUV. Its upright, boxy form and cargo area behind the third row may better suit a family focused on people-hauling and usable cargo than one seeking SUV proportions. The cited 234-mile maximum range belongs to an older model-year overview, so check the current model-year specification before relying on it.
