If you want an affordable sports car that feels composed and rewarding on a track, start with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, Hyundai Elantra N, and Honda Civic Si. They make the strongest evidence-backed shortlist here: light, balanced rear-drive choices alongside capable front-drive sedans. The available comparisons do not support a trustworthy ranking of ten cars with current U.S. prices and comparable track results, so this guide focuses on seven distinct options and keeps each measured result tied to its tested car and conditions.
What makes a car handle well on track?
Horsepower is only one part of the answer. Chassis balance, weight, steering response, tires, braking, and how confidently a driver can place the car matter just as much. A skidpad grip figure measures lateral grip in a specific test; it does not establish which car is quickest around every circuit. Likewise, autocross times apply to the cars, tires, course, and conditions in that particular comparison.

Seven affordable sports cars with credible handling credentials
Mazda MX-5 Miata: the light, communicative roadster
The Miata’s appeal is its light, open-air roadster format and the driver involvement that comes with it, not big power. In Edmunds’ 2026 comparison, a 2026 MX-5 Miata RF Club weighed 2,437 pounds, reached 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, and recorded 0.93 g on a 200-foot skidpad. Those are results for that RF Club test car, not every Miata trim. Edmunds’ separate comparison of 2024-model contenders recorded a 46.66-second autocross time for its Miata.

- Semi-slick, directional tread pattern ensures maximum dry grip and high-speed stability
- High-grip, heat-resistant racing compound provides consistent performance under extreme conditions
- Robust reinforcement belts maximize high-speed durability and structural integrity
- Wide shoulder blocks ensure superb rigidity and control during aggressive cornering
- Optimized design provides quick and precise steering response for enhanced driver control
Car and Driver listed a $31,665 starting price for the 2026 Miata on its ranking page accessed October 8, 2026. That starting figure should not be mistaken for the price of the RF Club tested by Edmunds.
Subaru BRZ: a balanced fixed-roof coupe
The BRZ offers a rear-wheel-drive coupe layout, and its handling balance earned particular praise in Edmunds’ 2026 comparison. The tested 2025 BRZ tS produced 228 hp, weighed 2,857 pounds, reached 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, and recorded 0.96 g on the 200-foot skidpad. Subaru’s official 2025 model page also lists 228 horsepower. In Edmunds’ comparison of 2024-model contenders, a BRZ tS posted a 46.22-second autocross time.
Rank #2
- Semi-slick, directional tread pattern ensures maximum dry grip and high-speed stability
- High-grip, heat-resistant racing compound provides consistent performance under extreme conditions
- Robust reinforcement belts maximize high-speed durability and structural integrity
- Wide shoulder blocks ensure superb rigidity and control during aggressive cornering
- Optimized design provides quick and precise steering response for enhanced driver control
These figures describe the tS test configuration, not the base BRZ. Car and Driver listed a $37,055 starting price for the 2026 BRZ on its ranking page accessed October 8, 2026, illustrating why trim and price need to be checked together.
Toyota GR86: a related coupe with its own character
The GR86 shares its basic lightweight, rear-drive coupe approach with the BRZ, but do not treat its test results as interchangeable with the Subaru’s. MotorTrend describes the Toyota as more slide-happy and notes that the twin coupes can carry track wheels and tires with the rear seats folded. That is useful practicality for drivers who transport a second set of wheels, though it does not substitute for a direct, same-course handling comparison.

- Semi-slick, directional tread pattern ensures maximum dry grip and high-speed stability
- High-grip, heat-resistant racing compound provides consistent performance under extreme conditions
- Robust reinforcement belts maximize high-speed durability and structural integrity
- Wide shoulder blocks ensure superb rigidity and control during aggressive cornering
- Optimized design provides quick and precise steering response for enhanced driver control
Car and Driver listed the 2026 GR86 from $32,695 on its ranking page accessed October 8, 2026. The available evidence does not provide a comparable GR86 track result alongside the Edmunds BRZ figures.
Hyundai Elantra N: the quick front-drive sedan
The Elantra N brings serious power to a practical front-wheel-drive sedan. The car in Edmunds’ comparison of 2024-model contenders was a 2023 Elantra N, rated at 276 hp and 289 lb-ft, and recorded the fastest autocross time among the four cars tested: 45.91 seconds. That result belongs to that car on that course; it is not proof that every Elantra N will beat every rival on a circuit.
Rank #4
- Semi-slick, directional tread pattern ensures maximum dry grip and high-speed stability
- High-grip, heat-resistant racing compound provides consistent performance under extreme conditions
- Robust reinforcement belts maximize high-speed durability and structural integrity
- Wide shoulder blocks ensure superb rigidity and control during aggressive cornering
- Optimized design provides quick and precise steering response for enhanced driver control
Honda Civic Si: a practical manual with street-friendly priorities
The Civic Si is a more everyday-oriented front-drive sedan. Edmunds’ 2024 comparison lists 200 hp and a 49.37-second autocross time for its test car, noting that it wore factory all-season tires. That tire detail matters: the result reflects the tested setup, not a controlled comparison on identical performance tires. MotorTrend’s 2025 coverage lists the Civic Si at 200 hp and 192 lb-ft.
Ford Mustang EcoBoost: more power, less grip in one comparison
The Mustang EcoBoost adds substantially more power and straight-line speed than the lightweight options. In Edmunds’ 2026 test, it produced 315 hp, weighed 3,626 pounds, reached 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and recorded 0.88 g on the 200-foot skidpad. Its as-tested price was $42,430. The skidpad result was lower than those of the lighter tested Miata and BRZ, but one grip figure is not a measure of total track pace.

Honda Prelude: notable grip, grand-touring character
The 2026 Prelude is a higher-cost hybrid coupe with a different mission from a dedicated track-focused sports car. Edmunds describes it as a charming grand tourer. In that publication’s 2026 test, the Prelude produced 200 hp, weighed 3,249 pounds, reached 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and recorded 1.02 g on the 200-foot skidpad. Its as-tested price was $43,650. The strong measured lateral grip is notable, but it does not by itself make the Prelude a track weapon or establish that it is the quickest around a circuit.

Edmunds’ comparison of 2024-model contenders provides one direct autocross reference for four cars. The Elantra N was a 2023 model; the times should be read as one-course results, not universal rankings.
| Tested car | Edmunds autocross time |
|---|---|
| Hyundai Elantra N (2023 test vehicle) | 45.91 seconds |
| Subaru BRZ tS | 46.22 seconds |
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | 46.66 seconds |
| Honda Civic Si | 49.37 seconds |
In Edmunds’ March 2026 comparison, the 200-foot skidpad results were for a different set of test cars and measure lateral grip rather than lap pace.
| 2026 test car | Edmunds 200-foot skidpad result |
|---|---|
| Honda Prelude | 1.02 g |
| Subaru BRZ tS | 0.96 g |
| Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club | 0.93 g |
| Ford Mustang EcoBoost | 0.88 g |
These tables answer different questions. Autocross times combine the car’s response with a particular short course and its conditions; skidpad numbers capture steady-state lateral grip. Neither table is a cross-test ranking, and neither supplies a substitute for a common circuit lap test.
How to choose the right one for your use
- Choose the Miata if an especially light roadster and open-air driving are priorities, and you can live with its two-seat format.
- Choose the BRZ or GR86 if you want a fixed-roof rear-drive coupe. The BRZ has the more directly documented measured comparisons here; MotorTrend highlights the GR86’s more slide-happy character. The rear seats in either twin coupe can help carry track wheels and tires, according to MotorTrend.
- Choose the Elantra N if you want a powerful front-drive performance sedan and value its result in Edmunds’ specific autocross comparison.
- Choose the Civic Si if a practical manual sedan matters more than topping that tested autocross comparison; account for the all-season tires Edmunds noted on its test car.
- Consider the Mustang EcoBoost or Prelude if you are open to a higher price and a different balance of performance priorities. The Mustang delivered more straight-line pace in Edmunds’ test, while the Prelude registered the strongest skidpad result in that comparison; neither fact alone establishes overall track superiority.
Check before buying or preparing for a track day
- Verify year and trim. A base-car starting price is not the price of a tested Club or tS model. Compare the exact configuration you can buy.
- Check the tires. Tire type affects grip and test results; Edmunds specifically noted all-season tires on its Civic Si test car.
- Compare like with like. Do not place an autocross time beside a skidpad figure as if they measure the same thing, or treat results from different tests as a single ranking.
- Plan for track wheels. The BRZ and GR86’s fold-down rear-seat utility can make hauling a spare set more practical, according to MotorTrend.
- Recheck current prices. Starting prices and trim availability can change. The cited 2026 figures are from Car and Driver’s ranking page accessed October 8, 2026; the Mustang and Prelude prices above are Edmunds as-tested figures.
Why this is a seven-car shortlist, not a ranked top ten
The evidence supports seven distinct candidates with at least some relevant handling, test, or model context, but it does not support three more cars with both current U.S. prices and comparable track evidence. Volkswagen GTI appears in 2025 budget-performance coverage, but that coverage does not establish the comparable track-handling case required for this guide’s promise. Adding cars merely to reach ten would imply a level of comparison the available evidence does not provide.
