For a new 2026 SUV, “affordable” needs a clear boundary. The verified starting prices in this shortlist range from $28,790 to $31,900, before you account for local taxes, dealer charges, options, and incentives. The available facts support a useful shortlist—not a defensible ranking of the ten best family SUVs. They also do not establish comparable cargo measurements or comfort scores across all models, so treat the price figures as starting points and check fit, equipment, and final pricing for the exact vehicle you are considering.
How to use this 2026 family-SUV shortlist
The nine candidates named here are the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. They are not ranked: the available evidence does not compare all nine on the same basis, and it does not support a fully vetted top ten. A low base price alone does not show which SUV will work best for a particular family.
Manufacturer starting prices are not out-the-door prices. Destination or delivery charges, options, dealer inventory, taxes, and incentives can vary by location and change over time. Compare the same drivetrain and trim, confirm which charges are included, and request a local purchase quote before treating two prices as directly comparable.
Verified 2026 starting prices and specifications
These figures are manufacturer-published starting prices, not estimates of a buyer’s final cost. Confirm current local pricing and included charges with the manufacturer and dealer.

How to judge whether an SUV will work for your family
Check the rear seat with your actual child restraints
Seat count does not tell you how many child seats will fit or whether an adult can sit beside them. Check rear-door access, buckle access, and the space left for the front passenger after installing the seats. If possible, bring the child restraints you use and test the intended seating positions in the exact vehicle.

Test cargo space with the rear seats occupied
Maximum cargo volume with seats folded is not a substitute for space behind an upright second row. Bring a stroller, sports gear, or other bulky items your household regularly carries and test them in the normal family configuration. The Tiguan’s published figures distinguish cargo behind upright seats from cargo with the seats folded; the sources do not provide an equivalent, consistently measured set across all nine candidates.
Compare comfort equipment by trim
Comfort depends on the specific vehicle and its equipment, not just the model name. Compare the trims you can actually buy, including seat adjustments and materials, climate controls, and driver-assistance features. The available sources do not establish a consistent independent comfort ranking or comparable ride and cabin-noise measurements for this group.

Match fuel-economy claims to the powertrain
Use EPA estimates for the exact engine, hybrid system, drivetrain, and trim you are evaluating. Honda’s cited 40 mpg combined figure is an EPA estimate for the 2026 CR-V Hybrid; it is not a figure for every CR-V. Toyota’s RAV4 page also reports fuel-economy figures, but the applicable trim and configuration matter.

On January 27, 2026, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced a new rear-impact whiplash-prevention evaluation. Four of the first 18 small SUVs tested earned good ratings. This is a test of the seat and head restraint in a particular rear-impact evaluation, not an overall crashworthiness rating or a complete safety score.

Among the candidate models, IIHS reported good results for the Subaru Forester and 2025 Toyota RAV4; acceptable results for the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V test vehicles from 2024–25, and Kia Sportage; a marginal result for 2025–26 Nissan Rogue test vehicles; and a poor result for 2025–26 Hyundai Tucson test vehicles. Those model-year scopes should not be silently extended to every 2026 vehicle or trim. Check the IIHS listing for the exact model year and its stated applicability. IIHS President David Harkey said, “This new test challenges automakers to further improve their seats and head restraints to provide better protection in the rear impacts that typically cause these injuries.” Read the IIHS release.
NHTSA’s 2026 model-year list identifies vehicles selected for testing, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Selection does not mean a vehicle has earned a particular star rating. Look up the exact model and configuration in NHTSA’s ratings database before citing a result.

A practical way to choose among the candidates
- Set a real price ceiling. Use local quotes for the trim and drivetrain you want, with destination or delivery, options, taxes, and incentives clearly separated.
- Check family fit in person. Try your own child restraints and typical cargo; assess rear access, front-seat position, and usable space with the second row occupied.
- Compare exact configurations. Verify fuel economy and comfort and safety equipment for the same model year, trim, and powertrain you are considering.
- Read safety results at their stated scope. Distinguish a specific IIHS test from an overall rating, and distinguish NHTSA test selection from a published star result.
