In 2018, aerial images showed roughly 20,000 recalled Volkswagen diesel cars stored at two Washington locations: about 10,000 at the Port of Aberdeen and another 10,000 in overflow lots in Elma. The estimates came from GeekWire’s reading of aerial views, not an official inventory. The Elma cars were parked beside the unfinished Satsop nuclear plant site, but the report did not establish what eventually happened to them.
Where the Volkswagen diesels were stored
GeekWire reported on March 3, 2018, that recalled Volkswagen diesel vehicles from Washington, Oregon and Alaska were being handled at the Port of Aberdeen, Washington. When the port ran short of space, cars were moved to a 55-acre parking area in Elma, roughly 20 miles east of the port. The report described the vehicles as either awaiting repairs or already repaired; it did not identify the status of each car. GeekWire’s report estimated about 10,000 vehicles at each location from aerial images. Those were approximate visual estimates, not audited totals.
Why the cars were beside a defunct nuclear plant
The Elma overflow lot sat next to the Satsop nuclear project, a large power-plant development that began construction in 1977 and was abandoned in 1983 before completion because of funding problems. The site was later redeveloped as a business park. GeekWire’s account placed the parked cars beside this unfinished project, creating a striking visual contrast between a major abandoned energy development and a large-scale vehicle emissions scandal. GeekWire reported the plant’s history and the adjacent storage lots.
What happened to the recalled cars?
The 2018 report said Pasha Automotive was overseeing the project, but a company manager declined to discuss its agreement with Volkswagen. GeekWire suggested that vehicles brought into compliance might later be resold through dealers; it did not confirm that this happened. The report therefore documents where the cars were being stored at the time, not their eventual disposition. It does not establish whether the vehicles were repaired, resold, scrapped, or moved elsewhere after 2018.
