Aaron Stanfield beat his father Greg by 0.001 second in the Pro Stock final at the 2026 NHRA Midwest Nationals—even though Greg recorded the quicker run. Aaron’s faster reaction at the starting line made the difference.
How Aaron won despite a slower elapsed time
NHRA’s event recap lists Aaron Stanfield’s run at 6.556 seconds and 209.20 mph. Greg Stanfield covered the course in 6.547 seconds at 209.85 mph, making his elapsed time 0.009 second quicker.

But elapsed time measures the run after launch; reaction time measures how quickly a driver responds to the starting signal. Aaron’s reaction time was 0.018 second, compared with Greg’s 0.028. That 0.010-second advantage at the start overcame Greg’s quicker run, and Aaron reached the finish first. Road & Track reported the winning margin as 0.001 second.

In drag racing, the elapsed time alone does not determine which car wins a head-to-head race. The two cars leave at different moments, so the earlier launch can decide who crosses the finish line first. NHRA described Aaron’s result as a holeshot victory.

Where the father-son final happened
The final took place Sunday, October 4, 2026, at World Wide Technology Raceway during the 15th annual NAPA Auto Parts NHRA Midwest Nationals. NHRA identified the event as the 17th of 20 races in the 2026 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Before the final, Greg had beaten Aaron in six of their seven previous meetings and had won their only earlier final-round matchup, according to NHRA. Aaron’s victory was his third of the 2026 season and the 17th event win of his career.
NHRA’s recap quoted Aaron after the father-son final: “It’s hard to get to the final round alone, and to be able to share it with my dad is pretty special.”
