File compliance and artwork alignment are separate checks: the image must be built on the template for the exact Tesla model, generation and listed trim. Start by matching the template before changing artwork or troubleshooting the upload.
Why a valid PNG can look wrong
A PNG’s extension, dimensions and file size determine whether it meets Tesla’s stated file requirements; they do not confirm that artwork lines up with the vehicle’s mapped surfaces. A design made against another model’s layout—or another generation or trim where Tesla supplies separate templates—can import successfully but fit the wrong panels.
Tesla’s custom-wrap repository provides vehicle-specific templates and examples. The public materials reviewed here do not explain per-panel UV coordinates or provide a panel map. A third-party guide reports that limitation in the public repository; it does not establish what mapping data Tesla may use internally.
Match the template before editing
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Confirm its model, generation and trim, then select the matching template from Tesla’s repository. Do not substitute a template for a different vehicle.
- Preserve the template layout. Create the design on its canvas and keep the panel arrangement intact. A PNG extension alone cannot tell you whether the artwork is aligned to the intended surfaces.
- Export and validate the file. Tesla specifies a size from 512×512 to 1024×1024 pixels, a maximum file size of 1 MB, and a filename of no more than 30 characters. Filenames may use letters, numbers, underscores, dashes and spaces.
Choose a transfer route
Tesla documents upload through the mobile app or transfer by USB. Neither method can correct artwork built on the wrong template.

| USB drive | Use a supported format: exFAT, FAT32, MS-DOS FAT, ext3 or ext4. Create a folder named Wraps at the drive’s root, and do not include map or firmware update files. NTFS is not supported. Tesla states that up to 10 wraps can be added by USB. |
The in-car destination for the imported designs is Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps. Tesla’s setup details and templates are in its custom-wrap repository.
Diagnose what happens in Paint Shop
The file does not appear
Check the PNG, dimensions, file-size limit and filename first. If transferring by USB, also verify the supported drive format, the root-level Wraps folder, and that map or firmware update files are absent. For app upload, confirm the app meets Tesla’s version requirement.

The file appears, but the design lands on the wrong panels
Return to the source artwork and confirm it was created on the template for the exact model, generation and listed trim. Check that the template canvas and panel arrangement were preserved. Repeating the transfer will not fix a template mismatch.
