But available evidence does not prove it is the most reliable Japanese V6, or establish that it outlasts Nissan’s VQ35DE. The right choice depends on the specific engine variant and vehicle, its maintenance record, and the condition of the rest of the drivetrain.
Why the Honda J35 stands out—and what the evidence can show
The J35 is a Honda V6 used in vehicles including the Odyssey, Pilot, MDX and Accord, according to a commercial engine retailer. That retailer describes J35A engines in those applications as durable and says they regularly reach 200,000-plus miles. This is a vendor-published claim, not an independently documented longevity study, so treat it as an encouraging reputation signal rather than a proven life-expectancy figure: J35 engine guide.
Honda continues to offer a V6 in at least one current model: its 2027 Odyssey specifications list a 3,471 cc engine rated at 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Those figures establish the engine’s application and output, not its reliability: 2027 Honda Odyssey specifications.
How strong is the reliability case?
There is no comparable independent dataset in the available sources that ranks specific J35 variants against specific Nissan VQ variants by long-term engine failure rates. Brand and vehicle dependability measures can offer context, but they do not answer which V6 lasts longest.

For example, J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reports 140 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) for Lexus, 161 for Mazda and 162 for Toyota in its quoted brand rankings. The study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; fieldwork ran from August to November 2024. These are vehicle dependability indicators, not engine failure rates or miles-to-failure estimates: 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.
Consumer Reports’ surfaced brand scores list Lexus at 77, Toyota at 73, Mazda at 58, Honda at 57 and Acura at 53. The page does not clearly state a survey year, and the scores are brand-level, not J35-specific: Consumer Reports reliability information.

How the J35 compares with Nissan’s VQ35DE
Nissan’s VQ35DE is another Japanese V6 worth considering. A commercial engine guide lists it in the Nissan 350Z, Infiniti G35, Altima and Maxima, and describes its service record positively. Because that assessment comes from a retailer rather than a head-to-head independent study, it should be treated as a vendor characterization: VQ35DE engine guide.
| What to compare | Honda J35 | Nissan VQ35DE |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence on engine longevity | A commercial retailer says J35A engines in several Honda and Acura applications regularly reach 200,000-plus miles; no underlying dataset is supplied in the cited passage. | A commercial guide describes the service record positively; no comparable engine-specific failure-rate dataset is supplied. |
| Applications identified by the cited guide | Odyssey, Pilot, MDX and Accord applications, according to the retailer; exact variants differ. | 350Z, G35, Altima and Maxima, according to the retailer. |
| Independent head-to-head failure-rate comparison | Not established in the available sources. | Not established in the available sources. |
Neither reputation settles the choice. Compare the exact engine and model year, the vehicle’s own dependability evidence, scheduled service and its cost, transmission and drivetrain condition, and parts and repair support for that particular model.

What to check before buying a J35-powered vehicle
- Identify the exact vehicle and engine. Confirm the model year, trim, transmission, market and engine code. “J35” covers variants, and parts or service requirements are not universal.
- Verify scheduled maintenance. Honda’s 2025 Pilot Maintenance Minder information lists “Replace timing belt and inspect water pump.” Check the owner’s manual and maintenance display for the vehicle in question to confirm applicability and timing: 2025 Honda Pilot Maintenance Minder.
- Ask for dated service records. Look for evidence of scheduled work, especially timing-belt service where applicable. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for an invoice or service record.
- Check recalls by VIN. Honda’s recall listing changes over time. Search the vehicle’s VIN and review notices applicable to its model year rather than relying on a general engine reputation: Honda recall information.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess leaks, unusual noises, warning lights, transmission behavior and overall condition before purchase.
- Price the whole ownership picture. Consider the condition and service needs of the transmission and other drivetrain components, as well as parts and repair support for the exact model—not just the engine’s reputation.
Honda’s 2026 Pilot owner information advises having abnormal conditions inspected and directs owners to authorized service information for complex tasks: 2026 Honda Pilot owner information.
