The National Farm Machinery Show was identified as its 55th annual edition when it opened in 2020. Its origins are described with two different dates in official accounts: one recounts a farm-show gathering in 1965, while a 2026 retrospective says the numbered show began in 1966 with 86 exhibitors. The Championship Tractor Pull joined the event in 1969.
Why 2020 was the show’s 55th annual edition
A contemporaneous Farm Progress report called the 2020 event the 55th annual National Farm Machinery Show. At its opening ceremony, representatives of 11 companies that had sponsored the show since its start received plaques. The named sponsors were Rhino Ag, Syngenta, Pioneer, Manitou Americas, John Deere, Grasshopper, Daugherty companies, Danuser, Case IH, AGI Hutchinson, and AGCO.
The list reflects the event’s durable connection to machinery makers, agricultural-input businesses, and equipment-related companies. It documents those sponsors’ relationship to the show; it does not establish that they were exhibitors at every edition.
When did the National Farm Machinery Show begin?
Official accounts point to two milestones rather than one uncontested start date. The show’s official history traces an earlier step to a University of Kentucky electricity demonstration and exhibit for farmers in Lexington in 1963. It then describes a few hundred farmers, salesmen, and crop experts gathering at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center in February 1965 “to start a farm show.”

These accounts can be read as referring to different milestones—the 1965 gathering and the start of the numbered show in 1966—but the sources do not explicitly state that this is the institution’s explanation. The distinction is the most careful way to describe the origin without erasing either date.

How machinery became central to the event
The official history places the show within a longer tradition of commercial agricultural exhibits at the Kentucky State Fair. It describes power equipment valued at half a million dollars occupying more than 30 acres of fairgrounds. Louisville’s position between the Midwest and South made the location accessible to manufacturers and dealers, and the event developed into a large indoor agricultural trade show.
The show’s history is therefore not only a sequence of anniversaries. It is also a record of machinery moving from fairground displays into a dedicated venue where manufacturers, dealers, and visitors could gather around farm equipment and related products.

When the Championship Tractor Pull joined the show
Four years after the show’s 1965 gathering, the event added a major entertainment draw. According to the official history, the first Championship Tractor Pull took place in Freedom Hall in 1969, with 66 tractors competing in three classes. The history describes it as the nation’s oldest tractor pull.

In 2018, Kentucky Venues reported more than 67,000 tickets sold across the pull’s five performances. That is a figure for the 2018 performances, not attendance at the 2020 55th annual show.

How large was the show?
Published scale figures vary by year and source, so they should not be treated as measurements of the 2020 edition or as a single continuous series.
| Year and publisher | Reported measure |
|---|---|
| 1966, National Farm Machinery Show retrospective (2026) | 86 exhibitors |
| 2018, Kentucky Venues | 314,000 attendees; more than 1.3 million square feet and 920 booths; estimated annual economic impact of $17 million for Louisville |

The 2018 and 2019 economic-impact estimates differ, and each belongs to its publisher and year. They are estimates, not attendance or revenue figures for the 55th edition.

A glimpse of the show’s early ambitions
The official history attributes a statement to then-Kentucky Governor Edward Breathitt during the opening address of the second annual National Farm Machinery Show. He described “untold educational benefits” and “a myriad of other possibilities [for the] agricultural industry.” The history embeds this wording in its narrative rather than providing a standalone transcript, so it is best read as the quotation it attributes, not as a complete speech.
