There is no single verified winner for “most aerodynamic car ever built”: the answer changes depending on whether you mean the lowest reported drag coefficient (Cd), the lowest total aerodynamic drag, or a production car that must meet road-use requirements. Mercedes-Benz lists two very different vehicles—the 1938 W 125 record car and the 2022 VISION EQXX concept—at Cd 0.17. Volkswagen reports Cd 0.158 for its 2026 Mission Efficiency concept, but that is a concept figure, not an established production-car record. Among the production milestones covered here, Mercedes-Benz reports Cd 0.20 for the EQS, with an important provisional-data qualification in its 2021 launch material.
What “most aerodynamic” means
Drag coefficient is a measure of how a shape moves through air. A lower Cd indicates a more aerodynamic shape, but Cd alone does not tell you the total aerodynamic drag: frontal area matters too. That is why a Cd figure is most informative alongside frontal area and the vehicle’s status—record car, concept, or production model.
The figures below come from Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen material, not from a single independent test using one standardized procedure. Treat them as manufacturer-reported values, not a precise cross-brand ranking. Vehicle configuration and measurement method can also affect reported Cd; the cited material does not provide a harmonized set of trim, wheel, tire, and test details for every vehicle.
Record cars and concepts
Record cars and concepts can pursue aerodynamic goals without the same constraints as series-production vehicles. Their figures are useful design milestones, but they do not establish a production-car record.

Why the concept figures matter
Volkswagen’s reported Cd 0.158 is the lowest figure in this group, but the Mission Efficiency is a 2026 concept, not a series-production car with an established specification. Mercedes-Benz’s W 125 and VISION EQXX are each listed at Cd 0.17, yet one is a 1938 record car and the other a 2022 concept. These values describe distinct vehicle types and eras; they are not proof that one is the universal aerodynamic champion.
Production-car milestones
Production cars must balance aerodynamic efficiency with packaging, comfort, safety, styling, and practical use. The following milestones are manufacturer-reported, and the stated vehicle status matters as much as the number.

How to read the production figures
The W124’s reported Cd 0.29 marks a production-car milestone: Mercedes-Benz identifies it as the first production car below 0.30. For the CLA (W 117), Mercedes-Benz gives both Cd 0.22 and frontal area of 2.19 m², and describes the model as having the lowest air resistance of any production vehicle worldwide in 2013. That is the company’s historical claim, not an independently standardized comparison across manufacturers.
Mercedes-Benz’s 2021 EQS release reports a Cd “starting from” 0.20. Because the release also calls its technical figures provisional pending official certification, this should not be treated as a final, universally applicable value for every EQS configuration. The technology overview lists the current CLA with EQ Technology at Cd 0.21; it does not state a frontal area there.

Where the Volkswagen XL1 fits
The XL1 shows how aerodynamic form can serve an efficiency-focused production vehicle, but Volkswagen’s 2013 release highlights its carbon-fiber construction and plug-in hybrid system rather than supplying a Cd in the cited material. Its reported 21 g/km CO2 is an emissions figure, not a drag measurement, so it cannot be used to rank the XL1 by Cd.

Of the production-car values presented here, the lowest manufacturer-reported figure is the Mercedes-Benz EQS at “starting from” Cd 0.20 in its 2021 launch material. That answer is limited to the vehicles and claims in this comparison: the figure was provisional pending official certification, and the available sources do not establish a harmonized, independent all-manufacturer production-car record. Do not substitute a record car or concept’s lower Cd for a production-car result.

Why a low Cd is only part of the story
A low Cd can help reduce aerodynamic resistance, but the actual drag also depends on frontal area. Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency announcement is notable for reporting both values—Cd 0.158 and 2.08 m²—whereas several historical and production-car sources give Cd without frontal area. Without matching area and comparable test procedures, Cd figures alone cannot settle which vehicle experiences the least total drag. Nor do the figures here establish a specific range gain for any electric vehicle.
The fairest reading is therefore category by category: the Mission Efficiency has the lowest reported Cd among these concepts and record vehicles; Mercedes-Benz reports Cd 0.20 starting for the EQS among the production entries shown, subject to its provisional-data caveat. Neither statement is an independently verified universal record.
