That is the manufacturer’s claim, not a record independently certified by a record authority in the sources cited here. Earlier milestones include the McLaren F1, Koenigsegg CCR and Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Their figures do not all represent the same kind of run or the same level of verification, so a headline speed alone cannot establish a clean, universally agreed record sequence.
Why “fastest production car” needs a definition
There is no continuous, authoritative production-car record list in the available sources. “Fastest” can mean a one-direction peak speed, a two-way average, or a record limited to a particular body style. A factory-built road car is also a different category from a purpose-built land-speed vehicle. These distinctions matter: a manufacturer’s reported top-speed achievement should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a record verified under a stated two-way format.
The milestones below are selected claims, not a complete chronology of every production-car record holder. Where the source does not specify the run format or independent verification, that gap is stated rather than filled in by assumption.

The sources give more than one precision for the CCR: Koenigsegg’s history states 387.86 km/h, while its model page rounds that figure to 388 km/h. Those are two presentations of the same 2005 claim, not separate records.

How the record claims changed
McLaren F1 to Koenigsegg CCR
Koenigsegg’s company history places the McLaren F1 at 386.4 km/h in 1998, then says its CCR took the Guinness fastest-production-car record at Nardo in February 2005. The company gives the CCR’s speed as 387.86 km/h in its history and 388 km/h on the model page. The small difference between the F1 and CCR figures makes precision and source attribution especially important.
The Veyron Super Sport and the 2013 review
Bugatti reports that a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport reached 431.072 km/h on 26 June 2010 under Guinness World Records and German TÜV supervision. In a statement dated 8 April 2013, Guinness wrote: “Bugatti’s record has not been disqualified; the record category is currently under review.” That statement supports describing the record as not disqualified at that time; it does not establish that every later or differently defined production-car claim uses an identical standard.

A separate roadster mark
Bugatti says the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse reached 408.84 km/h in 2013, setting a record for a road-approved roadster. The figure belongs to that body-style category. It should not be inserted into the closed-car sequence as though it displaced the Super Sport’s 2010 claim.
Beyond 300 mph, then a newer manufacturer claim
Bugatti describes the Chiron Super Sport 300+ achievement in 2019 as the first occasion on which a series-production car exceeded 300 mph, reporting 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h). The cited company account does not establish a two-way average, so the number is best presented as Bugatti’s top-speed achievement rather than as a directly comparable two-way record.

BYD/YANGWANG says its U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg on 14 September 2025. The company called it a production-car record and said it would make no more than 30 examples. Those facts make the announcement relevant to production-car record history, but the claim should remain attributed: independent certification by a record authority is not established by the cited material.
Does the Chiron Super Sport 300+ hold the production-car record?
Bugatti’s 2019 account supports the narrower statement that the Chiron Super Sport 300+ was the first series-production car to exceed 300 mph, at a reported 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h). It does not, by itself, settle a broader current record ranking: the source does not establish a two-way average, and BYD/YANGWANG later announced a higher U9 Xtreme top speed in 2025. The most accurate comparison keeps each claim’s format and attribution attached to its speed.

Production-car records are not the absolute land-speed record
Guinness lists the absolute land-speed record as 1,227.985 km/h (763.035 mph), set by Andy Green in the purpose-built Thrust SSC on 15 October 1997 over one mile. Thrust SSC is not a production car. The FIA’s land-speed archive likewise covers records recognized under FIA regulations across different course lengths and elapsed times; those rules describe land-speed categories, not a universal standard for production-car claims.
How to compare a new “fastest car” claim
- Identify the exact model and production status. A prototype, a limited-run road car and a series-production model are not interchangeable descriptions.
- Check the date and venue. A record-run date can differ from the date a company announces it.
- Read the run format. Determine whether the speed is a one-direction peak, a two-way average or an unspecified top-speed figure.
- Separate categories. Closed-roof cars, roadsters, production cars and purpose-built land-speed vehicles should not be blended into one ranking.
- Attribute the verification. A manufacturer announcement is a primary source for what that manufacturer claims, but is not independent validation. Note any named record body or measurement oversight.
For the milestones listed here, the sources do not specify every comparison detail consistently. The soundest history is therefore an attributed sequence of notable claims, not a definitive uninterrupted ranking.
