What a simple e-RV setup needs
Think of the vehicle as shelter and climate support, and the sleeping surface as the essential camping item. Rivian’s camping-gear discussion includes sleeping pads, but it does not establish a particular mattress or fit for either vehicle. Measure your own cargo area and check the surface created by the folded seats before buying a pad or SUV camping mattress. Seat shapes, gaps, and the usable length can matter as much as the vehicle’s headline cargo capacity.
- A sleeping pad or mattress sized to the measured space.
- Bedding appropriate for the expected conditions.
- A way to keep essential items organized without blocking the sleeping area.
Rivian discusses sleeping pads as part of camping gear in Everything in its Place. That mention supports the use case, not a claim that any named product fits a given SUV.
Using a Tesla Model Y for car camping
Tesla’s current Model Y page describes Camp Mode as a way to keep the cabin comfortable while car camping, and says the second-row seats fold flat. Those features make an interior sleeping setup plausible, but the page does not give a universal flat-bed dimension or mattress fit. Specifications can vary by trim and market, so confirm the details for the Model Y you own or are considering on Tesla’s Model Y page.

Do not treat a cargo-volume figure as the sleeping area: liters of storage do not tell you the length, width, contours, or uninterrupted surface available for a person to sleep on.
Sleeping in the Rivian R1S
For an interior setup, use the same measure-first approach: check the usable cargo-floor length and width with the seats configured for sleeping, then account for transitions and unevenness between surfaces. Rivian’s cited materials establish sleeping pads as relevant camping gear, but do not provide an R1S mattress specification or a measured sleeping-area dimension.

If you instead want to sleep above the cabin, the 2025 R1S Owner’s Guide gives vehicle-specific rooftop-tent instructions: mount the tent on the front two crossbars, spaced 36 in (915 mm) center to center. It says the rear crossbars are not recommended because the tent will not be level. Follow the guide for your vehicle and tent; this R1S instruction is not Tesla guidance. These are different approaches, not two versions of the same light interior kit. An interior setup keeps the sleeping space in the cabin and centers on a pad or mattress. A rooftop tent creates a separate elevated sleeping space and depends on roof-rack and tent compatibility.

What to verify before buying
- Measure the sleeping space. Configure the seats as you will for the trip, measure the usable area, and check contours, gaps, and transitions before selecting a pad or mattress.
- Confirm vehicle-specific features. Check the current manufacturer information for your trim and market rather than assuming all Model Y or R1S configurations are identical.
- For a rooftop tent, check fit before purchase. Rivian’s Gear Shop and model comparison page list crossbar and rooftop-tent products, but verify exact model-year compatibility and the applicable installation guidance for your vehicle.
