Its headline output figures were manufacturer claims reported at launch, not independent test results. Model year matters: 2015-spec bikes received reported suspension and clutch-calibration revisions, while parts listings for later Buell 1190SX-family machines do not establish fitment or stock for an older EBR.
What the EBR 1190SX is
Cycle World’s July 2014 launch report described the 1190SX as a naked streetfighter version of the EBR 1190RX. The report says the SX retained the RX chassis and twin-spar fuel-in-frame arrangement, along with its rake, trail and wheelbase, while a new upper triple clamp accommodated a tubular handlebar for a more upright posture. It was therefore a road-oriented sibling, not simply a lower-powered standard. Erik Buell called the concept a “Superfighter” in that report. Cycle World’s 2014 launch report
Be precise about the name: this article concerns the 2014–2015 Erik Buell Racing (EBR) 1190SX. Buell Motorcycle Co. later marketed a 1190SX in the revived Hammerhead 1190 family. The shared name and 1190cc platform do not establish that components interchange. Buell’s own account places its relaunch marketing around the Hammerhead 1190 and 1190SX in 2021. Engine, output and dimensions
The 2014 EBR owner’s manual identifies the RX/SX engine as a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 72-degree V-twin with 1,191 cc displacement, a 106.00 mm bore, a 67.50 mm stroke and 13.4:1 compression. Cycle World’s launch report lists claimed peak output of 185 hp at 10,600 rpm and 101.6 lb-ft of torque at 8,200 rpm. Those are launch-reported manufacturer claims, not independent dyno measurements. 2014 EBR owner’s manual; Cycle World launch report
#1 Best Overall
- Pirelli's Diablo Rosso 2 is the sportiest and most versatile road-oriented tire of the Rosso Generation. This supersport radial is perfect for all riding conditions, including the wet.
For 2015-spec information, Cycle World listed a 55.5-inch wheelbase and a 32.5-inch seat height. Treat these as figures from that period report, rather than universal measurements for every market or example: the 2014 manual cautions that specifications may vary with market certification, test methods and vehicle differences. What changed for 2015
Cycle World’s December 2014 test of 2015-spec bikes reports revised suspension settings compared with 2014 SX models, including a softer shock spring and changed damping rates. The testers found the suspension effective for roadholding but still harsh on rough pavement. The test also reports a revised hydraulic-clutch calibration intended to reduce lever effort following complaints about the 2014 RX clutch. These are reported engineering changes and test observations, not a guarantee that every 2015 bike will feel the same or be more reliable. Cycle World’s 2015 test

|---|---|---|
| Suspension | Baseline setup referenced by Cycle World’s report; no full settings list stated there. | Cycle World reports a softer shock spring and changed damping rates compared with 2014. |
| Clutch | Cycle World notes complaints about 2014 RX clutch effort; this is not a quantified 1190SX failure rate. | Cycle World reports revised hydraulic-clutch calibration intended to reduce lever effort. |
| Buying implication | Check condition, service records and exact parts fitment. | Confirm the revision and condition on the individual bike; do not assume the reported changes guarantee a particular ride or reliability outcome. |
The launch report gave the 2015 SX a U.S. launch price of $16,995 and listed Frost Bite White, Galactic Black and Racing Red as initial colors. That is a historical launch figure, not a current used-bike valuation. Cycle World launch report
What to check before buying one
There is not a comprehensive reliability ranking between 2014 and 2015 in the cited period test and owner’s manual. Assess the individual motorcycle rather than treating model-year revisions as a substitute for inspection.

- Ask for dated service records and compare completed work with the correct model-year manual.
- Check the motorcycle’s model year, VIN and market specification before relying on a part listing or maintenance instruction.
- Inspect the bike’s condition and ask a qualified service provider to assess concerns you cannot verify yourself.
- For tires, confirm approved fitment for the exact bike and market. The manual treats tire choice as safety-critical and warns that a mismatch can affect stability or cause tire failure.
- Before committing, identify how you would source any parts or service the particular bike may need; a family-level parts-book listing is not proof of stock or compatibility.
Oil and scheduled maintenance
Use the owner’s manual for the exact model year. The 2014 manual calls for an initial service at 620 miles (1,000 km), including an oil change and filter replacement, and provides later service intervals. It also says adverse operating conditions call for more frequent maintenance. Review the manual’s full schedule rather than treating the initial service as the complete maintenance plan. 2014 EBR owner’s manual
Oil specification and capacity in the 2014 manual
The 2014 manual recommends AMSOIL 20W-50 Advanced Synthetic Motorcycle Oil when adding or changing oil. It gives approximate capacities of 3.3 U.S. quarts (3.1 liters) with a filter change and 3.0 U.S. quarts (2.8 liters) without a filter change. These are manual figures for the 2014 RX/SX; follow the manual’s procedure to check the proper hot oil level and do not overfill. The recommendation does not establish current product availability or pricing. 2014 EBR owner’s manual

Tire fitment is not a guess
The manual says to use EBR-approved or recommended tires and to contact an EBR dealer, warning that a mismatch can affect stability or cause tire failure. For replacements, verify approval, fitment and tire condition for the exact motorcycle and market instead of relying on an unqualified size from a secondary listing. 2014 EBR owner’s manual
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Parts and support: distinguish the older EBR from later Buell models
Buell’s current parts-books page lists a “Buell Hammerhead 1190/1190SX Chassis Parts Book” and a parts-shopping route. Its FAQ separately says that tooling and parts inventory for historical Buell models older than 2015 are controlled by Harley-Davidson and points readers to Buell technical support and outside resources. These statements describe different parts of the support landscape; a parts book for the newer 1190SX family does not show that a particular component fits an older EBR 1190SX or is in stock.
