A 2026 Formula 1 car uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 internal-combustion engine (ICE) paired with a hybrid electrical system. The ICE is only one part of the complete power unit: the wider system also includes an energy store and an MGU-K, which recovers and deploys electrical energy. The FIA sets common limits, but that does not make every supplier’s design or performance identical.
What engine does an F1 car use?
The 2026 Formula 1 ICE is a four-stroke, 1,600 cc reciprocating-piston engine with six equal-capacity cylinders arranged in a 90-degree V. It is turbocharged and works with the car’s hybrid system. Those dimensions and configuration are specified in the FIA’s 2026 technical regulations; they describe the regulated architecture, not every detail of a manufacturer’s design. The FIA regulations hub listed Section C, Issue 20 as the current 2026 technical section on 7 October 2026. The hub gave a publication date of 1 October 2026, while the regulation PDF identifies the issue date as 5 August 2026.
What is the difference between an F1 engine and a power unit?
In precise terms, the engine is the ICE: it burns fuel and turns the crankshaft. The power unit is the larger package, combining that ICE with the electrical energy-recovery system, including the MGU-K and energy store. In casual conversation, “engine” often refers to the whole power unit, so the intended meaning depends on context.

The ICE turns fuel into mechanical power
Inside the V6, four-stroke combustion converts the fuel’s chemical energy into motion at the crankshaft. The turbocharger uses exhaust energy to drive a compressor that pushes more air into the engine, allowing the combustion system to produce power within the regulated design.

The MGU-K recovers and deploys electrical energy
The MGU-K is mechanically linked to the ICE and can add torque to propel the car. It also converts some of the car’s motion into electrical energy under braking and other permitted conditions, which can be stored for later use. The energy store, MGU-K and control rules therefore form an energy-management system—not simply an unrestricted electric boost button.
Under the 2026 technical rules, the ERS-K has an absolute electrical DC power ceiling of 350 kW. That ceiling is not a promise of constant deployment: permitted use and per-lap recharge depend on detailed conditions, including speed, session and circumstances. The FIA’s current technical section sets out the operative limits.

What changed in Formula 1 engines for 2026?
The 2026 framework removes the MGU-H, which formed part of the previous generation’s hybrid arrangements. It increases the electrical contribution and requires fully sustainable fuel. The FIA described the changes as a way to simplify the power unit while increasing electrical deployment. The FIA’s overview of the 2026 power-unit regulations says eligible sustainable feedstocks may include non-food bio-derived sources, genuine municipal waste and sustainable carbon capture. “Sustainable fuel” does not mean that fuel production and use have zero emissions across the full supply chain.
In its 2024 overview, the FIA estimated ICE power at about 400 kW and battery-system power at up to 350 kW. These are framework figures published by the FIA, not independent dynamometer measurements of every supplier’s unit. They should not be added together as a guaranteed, constant output: actual power delivery and energy use operate within detailed rules, and suppliers may implement the common architecture differently. The separate 350 kW limit in the 2026 technical rules is the ceiling for ERS-K electrical DC power, not a universal measurement of each car’s output.

Which 2026 F1 engine rules have changed or may change next?
The rules and proposals need to be distinguished by date and status. The current technical text governs the 2026 season; announcements about refinements or 2027 discussions are not interchangeable with that text.
2026 qualifying and race operation
On 20 April 2026, the FIA announced agreed operational refinements, including reducing the maximum permitted qualifying recharge from 8 MJ to 7 MJ. The announcement also described MGU-K deployment of up to 350 kW in key acceleration zones and a limit of 250 kW elsewhere. Those are dated seasonal updates; the current regulation issue provides the operative wording, and recharge limits depend on circuit and session provisions rather than one figure applying universally. 2027 proposals and confirmed context
The FIA separately described proposals for 2027 that would add approximately 50 kW of ICE power and reduce ERS deployment power by approximately 50 kW. It said further technical discussion was needed before a final package was settled, so these figures are proposals, not finalized rules. The FIA announcement explains the proposal status.
A 21 September 2026 FIA Commission statement reported that 2027 fuel-flow refinements correspond to an approved reduction in total race distance from 305 km to 290 km. That is a 2027 context point, not part of the 2026 engine specification. See the Commission statement.

Who makes Formula 1 engines?
For the 2026–2030 cycle, the FIA registered six power-unit suppliers: Alpine, Audi, Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes and Red Bull Ford. The FIA’s registration announcement confirms the list. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the six manufacturers reflected “the strength of the championship and the robust technical regulations” developed with Formula 1 and the suppliers. That statement concerns supplier participation and the regulatory framework, not comparative engine performance.
The shared rules establish a common baseline, but they do not establish which supplier has the best engine. The FIA materials cited here do not provide a sufficiently comparable public breakdown of each manufacturer’s internal design or performance for a defensible ranking. A meaningful comparison would need to distinguish ICE output from electrical contribution, account for energy recovery and deployment strategy, and identify whether a claim comes from a rule, a manufacturer statement or an independently measured result. Without that evidence, brand-by-brand rankings would be speculation.
