EV Solar Kits claimed its planned Tesla solar retrofit could add up to 60 miles of driving range per day, but the available evidence never established that figure as a measured real-world result. In a January 10, 2022 report, the startup described a roughly $5,000 system for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. At the time, no customer vehicle had reportedly received the kit, the final panel design was unfinished, and no independent test or finished-product photo or video had been supplied.
What EV Solar Kits proposed
EV Solar Kits cofounder Steele Wasik told Futurism that the company was developing roof-mounted photovoltaic panels for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The proposed price was approximately $5,000, and the startup claimed the system could provide up to 60 miles of additional range per day.

The concept was intended to collect solar energy while the vehicle was exposed to sunlight. The report also described planned extendable, trunk-mounted panels that could eventually support a wider range of electric vehicles.

The report did not make clear whether the Tesla system would be a permanently installed roof assembly, a removable accessory, a deployable panel array, or some combination of those approaches. It also did not explain whether the panels would feed the Tesla’s high-voltage battery directly, use a separate battery buffer, or connect through the vehicle’s charge port.

The 60-mile figure was a claim, not a demonstrated result
The most important qualification is the development stage. According to the 2022 report, EV Solar Kits had not installed the system in any customer vehicle. The company reportedly had beta-test drivers in the Austin, Texas, area, but declined to provide photo or video evidence of the product operating. Its final panel design was still being completed.
That makes “60 miles per day” a startup-reported maximum, not a verified daily output. “Up to” normally describes a favorable upper limit; it does not mean every vehicle will gain 60 miles each day.
There are also four different measurements that can be confused in a claim like this:
- Electricity generated by the panels;
- Electricity delivered through the charging electronics;
- Energy actually stored in the vehicle battery; and
- Driving range estimated from that stored energy.
A dashboard range estimate is not a substitute for metered energy delivered to the battery. Tesla range also varies with speed, temperature, terrain, tires, HVAC use, traffic, and driving style.
How much energy would 60 miles require?
A useful way to assess the claim is to convert miles into energy. If a Tesla uses roughly 250 to 300 watt-hours per mile at the battery, 60 miles would require approximately 15 to 18 kilowatt-hours of usable energy.
That is an illustrative calculation, not a measurement of the EV Solar Kits design. Actual consumption differs by model and conditions, and additional energy would be lost in wiring, power electronics, and battery charging.

The basic calculation is:
Daily solar energy = panel rated power × effective sun hours × system efficiency
To support a 60-mile estimate, a credible test would need to disclose the panel area and rated output, cell efficiency, effective sun-hours assumption, shading and temperature losses, conversion losses, battery-charging losses, and the Tesla model used for the range conversion.

The number is not automatically impossible. A vehicle equipped with a large fold-out or trunk-mounted array could collect more energy than a fixed roof alone. But the engineering question is whether the proposed hardware could deliver that energy at a practical size, weight, cost, durability, and level of convenience.
Why solar power on a car is difficult
Passenger vehicles have limited usable surface area. A roof is much smaller than a typical residential solar array, and its curved shape may prevent panels from operating at an ideal angle. The vehicle may also be parked under trees, beside buildings, in a garage, or in a shadow cast by another vehicle.
Output can fall sharply because of:
- Cloud cover and seasonal changes;
- Winter sunlight or high-latitude locations;
- Dust, snow, and dirt;
- Partial shading from trees, buildings, roof racks, or nearby vehicles;
- Heat-related efficiency losses;
- Nonideal panel orientation;
- Time spent driving instead of parked in sunlight; and
- Conversion and battery-charging losses.
“Per day” is therefore ambiguous. It might refer to a sunny summer day in Austin, a theoretical maximum, a modeled average, or an annual average. The available report did not establish which definition EV Solar Kits used.
Fixed roof panels versus deployable panels
A fixed roof system is simpler to use, but its output is limited by the roof’s area and orientation. It also adds weight and may affect appearance, service access, aerodynamics, and roof durability.

The panels could be vulnerable to wind, rain, theft, impact, or accidental movement, and they may be unusable while the vehicle is moving.

If the system were intended to operate while driving, it would need to address aerodynamic drag, structural attachment, crash behavior, electrical isolation, and the safety of exposed or moving components.
How would it connect to a Tesla?
Ordinary rooftop solar panels cannot simply be wired into a Tesla’s battery. An automotive integration would need suitable power electronics and controls for a high-voltage battery system, including isolation, thermal management, battery-management coordination, crash protection, and safe shutdown during service.
A serious product specification would need to answer:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does the system charge the high-voltage battery directly?
- Does it use a separate battery or power buffer?
- Does it connect through the Tesla charge port?
- Can it charge while the vehicle is moving?
- Must the vehicle remain parked or powered down?
- Does Tesla software need to recognize or control the system?
- How does the system isolate itself after a collision?
- What automotive safety standards apply to the installation and charging electronics?
None of those answers was documented in the available report. Without them, the proposal cannot be evaluated as a complete, installable automotive product.
Tesla’s own solar-car discussions do not validate this retrofit
The Futurism report placed the proposal in the context of Elon Musk’s earlier comments about possible solar options for Tesla vehicles, including a retractable concept associated with the Model 3 and a solar option discussed for the Cybertruck.
It also reported Musk’s later skepticism that vehicle-mounted solar would provide much daily energy unless the vehicle were driven relatively infrequently. Those comments are context, not evidence that Tesla endorsed EV Solar Kits. Tesla and Musk reportedly did not answer questions about a relationship or acquisition.

What did the startup’s warranty statement mean?
Wasik reportedly said the upgrades would not violate Tesla’s warranty. That was a statement from the startup, not confirmation of Tesla approval.

Before accepting such an assurance, an owner would need written answers about:
- Whether Tesla had been consulted or authorized the installation;
- Whether mounting, drilling, adhesives, or wiring could affect roof or electrical coverage;
- Whether Tesla service centers would work on a modified vehicle;
- Who would cover battery, wiring, water-ingress, fire, collision, and roof damage; and
- Whether the warranty position differed by country or U.S. state.
Insurance coverage would matter as well. A vehicle-mounted electrical retrofit could require disclosure to the insurer and documentation from the installer.
The company was still at an early stage
The report characterized EV Solar Kits as a pre-seed company. It said the startup expected to launch a crowdfunding campaign and had collected an email list of several thousand potential buyers.
Those details describe a venture seeking funding and validation, not an established automotive supplier. An email list is not a customer base, beta drivers are not necessarily paying owners, and a planned crowdfunding campaign is not proof that financing or production was completed.

Readers should not assume that a listing using the EV Solar Kits name represents the original company or a deliverable product. Before sending money for any similar retrofit, look for a finished prototype, documented panel dimensions and output, independent battery-energy measurements, repeated field tests, installation instructions, safety documentation, warranty terms, insurance guidance, refund terms, and a verifiable support organization.
For most owners seeking solar-powered EV charging, a conventional home solar array paired with an EV charger is a more established category than an unverified vehicle-mounted retrofit. That is a separate buying decision and depends on the home, utility rules, installation costs, and local sunlight.
What evidence would confirm the claim?
A credible demonstration would show the complete system installed on the claimed Tesla models and report:
- Panel dimensions, rated wattage, and total collection area;
- Weather, location, date, temperature, shading, and panel orientation;
- Energy generated by the panels;
- Energy delivered to and stored in the vehicle battery;
- Charging and conversion losses;
- Repeated results over different days and seasons;
- Whether panels were fixed, deployed, parked, or operating while driving;
- Safety testing and installation procedures; and
- Warranty, insurance, service, sales, and refund arrangements.
Without that information, the claim remains a technically interesting proposal rather than a proven Tesla upgrade.
Bottom line
EV Solar Kits said in 2022 that a planned Tesla Model 3 and Model Y retrofit costing about $5,000 could add up to 60 miles of range per day. The concept is not inherently impossible, particularly if it used deployable panels, but the cited report did not establish the energy calculation or document an independent test.
At the time, no customer installation had reportedly occurred, the design was unfinished, and the company had not demonstrated the product publicly. The available evidence also does not establish a later commercial launch. Treat the 60-mile figure as an unverified best-case startup claim—not as a normal daily result or a product you can assume is available to buy.
