Short answer: Subaru ranks first for 2025 predicted reliability, Lexus is the most consistently strong brand across the available studies, and Toyota has the best evidence for surviving to 250,000 miles. Those are different victories because the studies measure different stages of ownership.

This ranking compares Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability results with J.D. Power’s three-year dependability data and iSeeCars’ high-mileage analysis. It is an editorial ranking based on those datasets—not an official combined score—and it should be used to narrow a search to specific models, years, and powertrains.

2 Lexus No. 2 in Consumer Reports; No. 1 in J.D. Power at 140 problems per 100 vehicles; 12.8% 250,000-mile estimate Luxury-car maintenance and repair costs can be higher than those of a comparable mainstream vehicle
3 Toyota No. 3 in Consumer Reports; 17.8% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, the best result in iSeeCars’ analysis Brand averages can be affected by redesigned, truck, SUV, and electrified models
4 Honda No. 4 in Consumer Reports; 10.8% 250,000-mile estimate, third among all brands in iSeeCars The exact transmission, hybrid system, infotainment setup, and model year still matter
5 Acura No. 5 in Consumer Reports; 7.2% 250,000-mile estimate, above the industry average Premium parts, service, and equipment may cost more than on a related Honda
6 Mazda No. 6 in Consumer Reports; No. 2 among mass-market brands in J.D. Power at 161 PP100 Its 3.6% 250,000-mile estimate was below the iSeeCars industry average
7 Audi No. 7 in Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability ranking Its inclusion is based mainly on newer-vehicle prediction, not leading high-mileage evidence
8 BMW No. 8 in Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability ranking iSeeCars estimated only a 0.4% chance of reaching 250,000 miles
9 Kia No. 9 in Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability ranking iSeeCars estimated a 0.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles; engine generation and recall history deserve close attention

Note: Consumer Reports placed Hyundai tenth in its 2025 top-10 predicted-reliability list. Because this article ranks nine brands, Hyundai is outside the list rather than being treated as a tie or omitted without explanation.

What the three reliability studies actually measure

Reliability rankings often appear to disagree because they answer different questions. A new vehicle that has few early ownership problems is not automatically the vehicle most likely to reach 250,000 miles, and a three-year-old vehicle with a low problem count is not necessarily inexpensive to repair.

Study What it measures How to interpret it
Consumer Reports 2025 predicted reliability Owner-reported problems across roughly 300,000 vehicles and 20 problem areas, used to predict how current model-year vehicles are likely to perform Most useful for comparing the expected early ownership experience of newer vehicles
J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study Problems reported by 34,175 owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, during the preceding 12 months Useful for three-year dependability; lower problems per 100 vehicles is better
iSeeCars 2025 Longest-Lasting Brands An analysis of more than 174 million vehicles estimating each brand’s chance of reaching at least 250,000 miles Useful for judging extreme long-term durability, not short-term defect rates or repair costs

J.D. Power reports its result as PP100, or problems per 100 vehicles. A score of 140 does not mean that every Lexus owner experienced 1.4 breakdowns. It is a survey measure of reported problems, and a problem can range from an annoyance to a significant defect. Similarly, iSeeCars’ percentages are estimates of reaching a very high mileage threshold; they are not a guarantee that an individual vehicle will last that long.

Why each brand ranks where it does

1. Subaru: best 2025 new-car reliability signal

Subaru takes the top spot because it led Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking. Consumer Reports’ methodology draws on owner reports across multiple trouble categories, and consistent mechanical designs tend to be rewarded by that approach. For a buyer primarily concerned with avoiding problems during the early years of ownership, Subaru is therefore the strongest starting point in this dataset.

The qualification is substantial: Subaru did not show the same strength in iSeeCars’ extreme-mileage analysis. It ranked fifteenth among 32 brands, with a predicted 2.3% chance of reaching 250,000 miles—well below the 4.8% industry average. That does not prove Subaru vehicles are short-lived. It does show that a high current-model score should not be confused with the strongest evidence of quarter-million-mile durability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best interpretation: choose Subaru when current predicted reliability is your priority, then inspect the exact powertrain and model year carefully. Be especially cautious about assuming that a newly redesigned vehicle will perform like a long-running design.

2. Lexus: the most consistent all-around performer

Lexus is the most convincing overall reliability choice because it performed strongly in all three comparisons. It ranked second in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability list, led J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability study with 140 PP100, and ranked second in iSeeCars’ long-term analysis with a 12.8% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

That combination covers newer-vehicle problems, three-year dependability, and unusually high-mileage survival. It is the closest thing this group has to a consensus pick. The trade-off is ownership economics: Lexus is a luxury brand, so tires, parts, scheduled service, electronics, and dealer labor can cost more than on a mainstream Toyota. High reliability reduces the chance of problems; it does not make premium repairs inexpensive.

Best interpretation: Lexus is the safest all-around reliability shortlist if the purchase price and potential luxury-brand maintenance costs fit the budget.

3. Toyota: strongest evidence for long-term durability

Toyota ranked third in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability results and third among mass-market brands in J.D. Power’s study at 162 PP100. Its decisive advantage came from iSeeCars: Toyota led every brand with a 17.8% estimated chance of reaching at least 250,000 miles. That is about 3.7 times the study-wide average of 4.8%.

Toyota is the data-backed choice when a buyer expects to keep a vehicle for a very long time or accumulate substantial mileage. But its third-place Consumer Reports position is a useful warning against treating the badge as a guarantee. Brand averages combine multiple vehicles, generations, and powertrains. A recently redesigned truck, SUV, hybrid, or battery-electric model can have a very different ownership record from a mature model with years of carryover engineering.

Best interpretation: Toyota is the strongest long-term durability bet, provided the specific model and powertrain have a solid record.

4. Honda: a strong balance of current and long-term evidence

Honda placed fourth in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking and third overall in iSeeCars’ 250,000-mile analysis. Its 10.8% estimate was more than twice the industry average and put Honda behind only Toyota and Lexus in that study.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Honda’s position is stronger for durable ownership than its Consumer Reports rank alone suggests. It is a sensible mainstream choice for someone who wants both a favorable newer-vehicle reliability signal and a meaningful record of high-mileage survival. Still, the brand includes different engines, transmissions, hybrid systems, electronics packages, and generations. A model’s redesign year and service history can matter more than the difference between Honda’s fourth-place brand score and another brand’s nearby position.

Best interpretation: Honda belongs on nearly every mainstream reliability shortlist, but verify the exact model-year history before buying.

5. Acura: credible premium durability, with premium ownership costs

Acura ranked fifth in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability list and fourth in iSeeCars’ long-term analysis. Its 7.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles was above the 4.8% industry average, although it trailed Honda, Toyota, and Lexus.

That makes Acura a credible premium alternative for buyers who want Honda-related durability evidence with more upscale equipment. The reliability data does not erase the practical cost difference between an Acura and a comparable Honda. Higher trims, more electronics, larger wheels, specialized components, and premium labor can increase repair bills even when the vehicle does not experience problems frequently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best interpretation: Acura is a reasonable premium choice for long-term owners, especially when the exact model has a mature powertrain and a complete maintenance history.

6. Mazda: excellent three-year dependability, less convincing at 250,000 miles

Mazda ranked sixth in Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability list and performed particularly well in J.D. Power’s three-year study. At 161 PP100, it ranked second among mass-market brands, just ahead of Toyota’s 162 PP100. That narrow difference makes Mazda one of the most notable current dependability performers in the research.

Its long-term result tells a different story. iSeeCars estimated a 3.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, below the 4.8% industry average. The lesson is not that Mazda is unreliable; it is that strong early ownership dependability and extreme-mileage survival are separate attributes. A buyer keeping a vehicle for three to five years may reasonably weigh Mazda’s J.D. Power result more heavily than a buyer planning to drive it for several decades.

Best interpretation: Mazda is especially attractive for buyers prioritizing current three-year dependability, but Toyota, Lexus, Honda, and Acura have stronger evidence for extreme longevity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Audi: a favorable newer-vehicle result, not a long-term leader

Audi’s seventh-place position comes from Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking. That is meaningful: Audi performed well enough in the current-model owner-survey data to enter the top 10. It does not establish that Audi has the same long-term durability record as the Japanese brands at the top of the iSeeCars analysis.

Audi was not among the four brands that exceeded iSeeCars’ 4.8% industry average for reaching 250,000 miles, and it was not highlighted among the leading brands in the J.D. Power summary supplied for this comparison. Buyers should therefore evaluate the precise engine, transmission, electronics package, and model year rather than reading the seventh-place result as a blanket endorsement.

Best interpretation: Audi may be worth considering when a specific newer model has strong evidence and an owner is prepared for premium maintenance and repair costs.

8. BMW: better current prediction than long-term mileage evidence

BMW ranked eighth in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking. That suggests its current model-year results were more favorable than the brand’s traditional reputation might lead some shoppers to expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The long-term data is far less encouraging. iSeeCars estimated a 0.4% chance of a BMW reaching 250,000 miles in its 2025 brand table, and BMW was not in the above-average group. That is a major difference from Toyota’s 17.8% estimate. It does not mean every BMW will become unreliable, but it does mean that a buyer planning very high mileage should budget carefully for maintenance complexity and high-mileage repairs.

  • Versatile Automotive Applications: Suitable for various automotive tasks, including trim adjustment, vent/dashboard maintenance, loosening/tightening screws, and interior disassembly.

Best interpretation: BMW’s Consumer Reports result is a newer-car signal, not evidence that it matches Toyota, Lexus, Honda, or Acura for extreme long-term durability.

9. Kia: a reasonable current-model entry, but not a high-mileage leader

Kia ranked ninth in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking, which earns it a place in this current-model list. However, iSeeCars estimated only a 0.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, and Kia was not among the brands above the 4.8% industry average.

For Kia shoppers, model-year history is particularly important. Check the engine generation, recall status, warranty terms, service documentation, and the exact vehicle identification number before purchase. A brand-level ranking cannot tell you whether a specific used Kia has been maintained properly or whether a particular generation has known issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best interpretation: Kia can be considered on a model-by-model basis for newer ownership, but the available evidence does not make it a long-term durability leader.

Why the rankings disagree

They examine different vehicle ages

Consumer Reports is primarily a forward-looking estimate for current model-year vehicles based on owner-reported trouble patterns. J.D. Power examines 2022 vehicles after three years, while iSeeCars looks across a massive used-vehicle population to estimate survival to 250,000 miles. A brand can rank well for one period and less impressively for another without either study being contradictory.

New designs have more uncertainty

J.D. Power found a meaningful difference between newly launched 2022-model-year vehicles and carryover models: new launches averaged 241 PP100, compared with 196 PP100 for carryover vehicles. That supports a practical rule for shoppers: do not treat a brand average as a verdict on a newly redesigned vehicle.

New technology and new engineering may eventually prove durable, but a buyer has less real-world history to examine. When reliability is the main goal, a mature generation with a well-documented service record can be a safer bet than the newest redesign, regardless of the badge on the hood.

Powertrain choice changes the result

In J.D. Power’s 2025 study, conventional hybrid vehicles had the fewest problems among the listed powertrain groups. Plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles had higher problem rates than conventional hybrids in that study. This is a study-specific finding, not proof that every hybrid is more reliable than every gasoline vehicle or that every electric vehicle will have a high problem rate.

Powertrain complexity, software, battery systems, transmission design, charging equipment, and the maturity of the particular model all matter. Compare the exact powertrain rather than assuming that a brand’s overall ranking applies equally to its gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric vehicles.

How to use this ranking before buying

  1. Choose your ownership target. If you want a relatively trouble-free new vehicle over the early years, give more weight to Consumer Reports. If you plan to drive beyond 200,000 miles, give more weight to iSeeCars and the model’s generation-specific history.
  2. Shortlist the exact model and generation. Brand rankings are filters, not purchase recommendations. Identify the model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, hybrid system, and trim before comparing reliability.
  3. Check model-year predicted reliability. A high-ranked brand can contain a weak model, and a lower-ranked brand can contain one particularly durable vehicle. Look for evidence specific to the vehicle you intend to buy.
  4. Investigate recalls and technical information. Run the vehicle identification number through the applicable official recall lookup, confirm that recall repairs were completed, and ask a dealer or qualified repair shop about relevant technical service information.
  5. Compare ownership cost, not just problem frequency. PP100 and predicted trouble rates do not tell you what a repair costs, how long the vehicle may be out of service, or whether parts and labor are affordable in your area. Get insurance, tire, scheduled-service, and common-repair estimates before deciding.
  6. Inspect a used vehicle independently. Review service records, start the vehicle cold, check for leaks and warning lights, examine tire wear, test the transmission and brakes, inspect the underbody and suspension, and verify that the dashboard warning lamps illuminate during the startup check and then go out normally.
  7. Use diagnostic tools carefully. An OBD2 scanner can help identify stored powertrain fault codes during a warning-light investigation or used-car evaluation, but a basic scanner cannot diagnose every fault, access every manufacturer module, or replace a professional inspection.

Which brand is best for different reliability priorities?

Your priority Best data-backed starting point Why
Fewest predicted problems in current models Subaru It led Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking
Most consistent performance across all three measures Lexus It was second in Consumer Reports, first in J.D. Power, and second in iSeeCars
Best evidence for reaching 250,000 miles Toyota Its 17.8% iSeeCars estimate was the highest by a wide margin
Mainstream balance of current reliability and longevity Honda It ranked fourth in Consumer Reports and third in iSeeCars
Premium alternative with above-average high-mileage evidence Acura Its 7.2% iSeeCars estimate exceeded the industry average
Strong three-year mass-market dependability Mazda It ranked second among mass-market brands in J.D. Power at 161 PP100

Editorial method and source notes

This list uses Consumer Reports as the backbone for the nine-brand order because it provides a complete 2025 top-nine sequence. The other studies are used as cross-checks and to explain the difference between early reliability and long-term durability. No arbitrary weighted average was created, because combining a predicted problem rate, a three-year PP100 score, and a 250,000-mile survival estimate would give the appearance of mathematical precision without making the underlying measures comparable.

  • Consumer Reports 2025 predicted reliability: owner-survey data covering roughly 300,000 vehicles and 20 problem areas. Its top sequence was Subaru, Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Acura, Mazda, Audi, BMW, Kia, and Hyundai.
  • J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study: 34,175 owners of 2022 model-year vehicles, surveyed after three years. Lexus led all brands at 140 PP100. Buick led mass-market brands at 143 PP100, followed by Mazda at 161 and Toyota at 162.
  • iSeeCars 2025 Longest-Lasting Brands: analysis of more than 174 million vehicles. Toyota led with a 17.8% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles, followed by Lexus at 12.8%, Honda at 10.8%, and Acura at 7.2%. The industry average was 4.8%. Mazda was estimated at 3.6%, Subaru at 2.3%, BMW at 0.4%, and Kia at 0.6%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Subaru more reliable than Toyota?

It depends on the time horizon. Subaru ranked first and Toyota third in Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability ranking. Toyota had much stronger evidence for extreme longevity, with a 17.8% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles versus Subaru’s 2.3% in the iSeeCars analysis.

Which car brand is most likely to reach 250,000 miles?

Toyota had the highest estimated probability in iSeeCars’ 2025 analysis at 17.8%, followed by Lexus at 12.8%, Honda at 10.8%, and Acura at 7.2%. Those are brand-level estimates, not guarantees for an individual vehicle.

Does a lower J.D. Power PP100 score mean fewer breakdowns?

A lower PP100 score means owners reported fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the study’s defined period. It is not a direct count of breakdowns, repair bills, or roadside failures, and it should not be compared as if it were the same measurement as Consumer Reports’ predicted reliability or iSeeCars’ mileage-survival estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy any model from one of the top-ranked brands?

No. Brand rankings are only a first filter. Check the exact model, model year, generation, engine, transmission, powertrain, redesign history, recalls, service records, ownership costs, and—on a used vehicle—an independent inspection.

Are hybrids more reliable than gasoline cars?

J.D. Power’s 2025 study found conventional hybrids had the fewest problems among its listed powertrain groups, while plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles had higher problem rates than conventional hybrids. That is a study-specific result, so compare the exact vehicle and powertrain rather than generalizing to every hybrid or EV.

The Bottom Line

The honest answer is not that one badge guarantees reliability. Choose Subaru if current-model predicted reliability is your main concern, Lexus if you want the strongest consistency across the studies, or Toyota if extreme long-term durability is the priority. Honda and Acura are also strong evidence-based choices, while Mazda stands out for three-year dependability. Whatever brand you choose, the exact model, generation, powertrain, recall history, maintenance record, and inspection matter more than a logo alone.
