An “extended car warranty” is usually a separately purchased vehicle service contract, not an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty under federal law. Some contracts may be useful, but the label alone says nothing about their value or legitimacy. Before buying, check what is already covered, what the contract excludes, who stands behind it, and how claims and cancellations work.
First, what is an “extended car warranty”?
Federal consumer guidance distinguishes a manufacturer’s warranty from a vehicle service contract bought separately. Manufacturers, dealers, and independent companies may sell service contracts, but calling one an “extended warranty” does not make it the same as the factory warranty. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explain the difference in their auto warranty and service-contract guidance and CFPB overview.
The reasons below are warning signs to investigate—not proof that every service contract is fraudulent. A contract’s value depends on its price, coverage, restrictions, provider, and claims process.
Eight reasons an offer may be poor value or deceptive
1. It may duplicate coverage you already have
A service contract might overlap with the vehicle’s manufacturer warranty. Before paying, check your warranty documents or confirm coverage with the manufacturer or dealer. Compare the contract’s start date, mileage limits, duration, and covered components with the protection already in force. Paying for overlapping coverage can leave you spending extra without gaining meaningful protection. The FTC specifically advises consumers to check for duplication.

2. The price and deductible may outweigh the likely benefit
The FTC says service-contract prices can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars; that is a possible range, not a market average or a prediction that a buyer will lose money. Add the total contract price to any deductible charged per repair visit, then compare that cost with the repairs the contract actually covers and its payment limits. A low monthly payment can obscure a costly total.
3. Exclusions may rule out the repairs you expect
A broad sales phrase such as “comprehensive” does not tell you what the provider will pay for. Read both the covered-parts list and the exclusions. Then look for conditions that could affect a claim, including maintenance requirements, proof of service, pre-existing-condition rules, or limits on where repairs may be done. FTC guidance warns that exclusions and contract conditions can substantially limit coverage.

4. Routine maintenance is usually not the point of the contract
Do not assume the contract pays for ordinary upkeep. The CFPB says vehicle service contracts typically exclude routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement. Check the written terms for the specific services included rather than relying on a sales description.
5. The claims process may limit where and how you get repairs
Coverage is only useful if you can meet the contract’s requirements when a problem arises. Find out whether the provider must authorize repairs before work begins, which repair shops are permitted, what records you must submit, and how reimbursement works. Also check the deductible and any limits on towing or rental-car costs. The FTC’s advice on service contracts and its extended-warranty guidance urge consumers to examine these details.

6. The seller may not be the company responsible for paying claims
A dealer or telemarketer may sell a contract administered or backed by another company. Identify the seller, administrator, and the party responsible for providing coverage; do not treat familiar branding or a dealer relationship as proof that the manufacturer backs the plan. Check the responsible company’s reputation and complaints. The FTC cautions that some telemarketing sellers may no longer be in business when a consumer needs service.
7. An urgent “your warranty is expiring” pitch can be a pressure tactic
An unsolicited call, text, or letter may sound as though it comes from your dealer or automaker even when it does not. Pressure to act immediately, disclose financial information, or pay before receiving the full written terms is a reason to stop and verify. Contact the dealer or manufacturer using contact information you find independently, not a number or link supplied in the message. The FTC describes deceptive warranty pitches and recommends checking who is contacting you.

8. Cancellation and refund rules may not match your assumptions
The CFPB says consumers have the right to cancel an extended warranty or vehicle service contract. That does not establish one refund formula for every contract or state. Read the signed agreement for the cancellation procedure, deadline if any, and refund calculation, and check applicable state rules if the terms are unclear. Do not rely on a salesperson’s verbal summary in place of the contract.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Documented deception is real, but one case does not define the industry
The FTC’s enforcement action against American Vehicle Protection (AVP) illustrates why it matters to verify a seller’s claims. The agency said AVP used deceptive telemarketing, including pretending to represent dealers or manufacturers and making false “bumper to bumper” claims. In a 2022 announcement, then-FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “AVP blasted consumers with illegal calls and made bogus claims about bumper-to-bumper warranties.” The agency later announced it was sending more than $449,000 in refunds to consumers harmed by that specific matter. That figure describes the AVP case, not losses across the service-contract industry. See the FTC’s 2022 announcement and 2024 refund notice.

How to evaluate a contract before you buy
- Get the complete written contract. Do not decide based only on a phone pitch, mailer, or summary.
- Compare it with existing coverage. Check start date, covered components, duration, and mileage limits against the manufacturer’s warranty.
- Calculate the cost. Include the full price, per-visit deductibles, and any stated limits on payments or related expenses.
- Read coverage and conditions together. Review exclusions, maintenance obligations, documentation rules, and permitted repair facilities.
- Identify who is responsible. Confirm the seller, administrator, and company obligated to provide the coverage, then look into that company’s reputation and complaints.
- Understand claims and cancellation. Confirm authorization and reimbursement steps, towing or rental limits, cancellation procedure, and refund calculation.
- Compare with saving for repairs. Decide whether setting aside the same money for future repair costs suits your budget and risk tolerance better than paying for this contract.
The FTC’s consumer guidance on extended warranties and service contracts offers additional questions to ask. Federal guidance does not rank individual providers or establish a universal claim-denial rate, loss rate, or best contract.
Quick Recap
What to do if you receive a suspicious pitch—or have a problem
- For an unsolicited “warranty expiring” message, do not provide financial information or pay before reviewing the contract. Verify the claim with your dealer or manufacturer through independently obtained contact details.
- If you have a contract dispute, contact the seller or contract company first and keep copies of the agreement, repair records, and communications.
- You can report suspected deception or other problems to the FTC and your state attorney general or consumer-protection office. The FTC explains these steps in its service-contract guidance.
