Several 2024 SUVs had high remaining inventory or sold below MSRP in September 2024, but that does not establish that dealers are desperate—or that any of these vehicles is still available new today. The figures below are historical U.S. market examples, not current offers. Check local stock and get a dated, written quote before treating a 2024 SUV as a deal.
What “dealers are desperate” really means
High days of supply or a below-MSRP average can point to more potential negotiating room, but neither proves an individual dealer will discount a particular vehicle. Inventory varied among brands and stores: Cox Automotive reported 2.66 million unsold new vehicles available in the U.S. on January 1, 2024, equal to 70 days of supply, while Toyota and Honda were among the major automakers with the lowest inventory. By September 2024, Cars Commerce reported that Jeep, Ram and Dodge averaged 131 days of unsold inventory, compared with a 72-day market average. This brand-level measure indicated inventory pressure; it did not establish that every SUV or dealership from those brands was negotiable. Cars Commerce

CarEdge’s September 2024 analysis identified models with substantial remaining 2024 inventory and considered sales rates when assessing possible negotiability. The figures are that analysis’s historical estimates—not live inventory counts.

How to judge a remaining 2024 SUV offer
A low advertised price is only useful if the specific vehicle, its condition and the full purchase terms suit you. Check these items before comparing offers:

- Verify the vehicle exists and is available. Ask for its VIN, stock number, location and a written quote dated that day. The historical figures above do not establish that any 2024 SUV remains unsold in October 2026.
- Compare the out-the-door price. Request an itemized total including taxes, registration, dealer fees and any add-ons. Separate a dealer discount from manufacturer incentives, and check eligibility rules for rebates.
- Compare financing on its own terms. A lower monthly payment can mask a longer loan or higher total borrowing cost. Compare the amount financed, APR and term, and compare any cash incentive with the financing offer you actually qualify for.
- Check the exact model-year equipment. Compare the specific 2024 vehicle’s trim and equipment with the equivalent 2025 model. For the Terrain, the 2025 redesign is a documented example of why the outgoing model’s price is not the only consideration.
- Confirm new-car and warranty status. Ask whether it is untitled and never registered, or a dealer demo or pre-registered unit. Have the dealer confirm the warranty start date and applicable terms in writing.
- Make sure it fits your use. Compare passenger space, cargo needs and driving requirements on the actual trim. A discount does not compensate for a vehicle that does not fit your routine.
These checks matter even when a model appeared in a high-inventory list: a national historical estimate cannot tell you whether a local vehicle’s equipment, status or final price is right for you.
