These seven van conversions show how different owners turned compact vehicles into homes by prioritizing the routines that mattered to them: sleeping, cooking, working, washing, storing gear, and spending time off-grid. They are selected case studies, not a ranking or a representative sample of every van build.

Seven tiny homes on wheels, and the design choices behind them

1. Lorjor Explore: extended high-roof Ford Transit

Lorjor Explore’s full-time home is a 2020 extended high-roof Ford Transit. The owners say they bought it in 2021 with 26,000 miles. Their layout places a bathroom and kitchen toward the front, with a rear U-shaped lounge that converts into a bed slightly larger than a standard queen. That arrangement gives the van distinct living and sleeping modes, rather than leaving a fixed bed in place all day.

The owners list a wet bath, a 30-gallon fresh-water tank, and a 15-gallon gray-water tank. Their electrical system is listed as 620W of solar, a 400Ah lithium battery bank, and a 3000W inverter/charger. These are owner-reported specifications, not independently measured results or a standardized estimate of how long the van can run without hookups. See the Lorjor Explore van tour.

2. Sara and Alex James: custom Sprinter

This custom Sprinter combines a farmhouse-sink kitchen with an enclosed shower that has hot water, plus a urine-diverting toilet. The bed converts into a table, so the sleeping area can serve another purpose during the day. A mini fridge, diesel heater, and built-in dog-crate area round out the practical details.

The tour lists 300W of solar, 300Ah of lithium batteries, and a 3000W inverter/charger. As with the other build specifications here, those figures describe this particular setup; they are not a direct prediction of off-grid endurance for another van or household. See Sara and Alex James’s van tour.

3. Two with a View: Peugeot Boxer

Two with a View put the bedroom at the back of their Peugeot Boxer and designed a slide-out bed. At night, cushions from the seating area fill the bed’s foot to extend the sleeping surface. It is a way to keep the daytime seating arrangement useful while making a larger bed when needed.

The authors say they built two campervans over several years and used what they learned to refine this DIY layout. Their page was first published November 3, 2024, and updated March 16, 2026. Read the Peugeot Boxer tour.

4. Jennelle Eliana: 1995 GMC Vandura Explorer

Jennelle Eliana converted a 1995 GMC Vandura Explorer herself after buying it in 2017. Apartment Therapy describes a compact, colorful interior with solar power, a working sink, clothing storage, and a heated enclosure for her pet snake. Eliana had originally wanted a Sprinter but found this used conversion van instead—a reminder that a suitable starting point does not have to be the newest or most obvious platform.

5. When You Wander: “Stan,” a Ford Econoline conversion van

Rather than stripping the interior, the owners of “Stan” kept the folding rear bench, which turns into a bed, and used the space below it for storage. They removed the rear captain’s chairs and the TV/VCR, making selective changes while retaining furniture that still served a purpose. This approach can reduce the scope of a conversion when a used conversion van already has useful features.

See When You Wander’s tour of Stan.

6. Bearfoot Theory: 144-inch 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter

Kristen Bor’s retrospective account of a 144-inch 4×4 Sprinter centers on preserving an open walkway while fitting a work table, storage, a shower, a toilet, and a galley. A convertible sofa-bed and removable table helped the shorter van support those uses without permanently occupying the aisle.

7. The Fites: extended-wheelbase Ford Transit

The Fites describe a 2016 extended-wheelbase Ford Transit conversion completed in just over three months. Their page gives the indoor area as 80 square feet and the rear pull-out deck as 20 square feet, and features a rooftop deck as well. It also covers insulation and the subfloor, making this tour useful for readers interested in construction choices as well as the finished interior.

What the layouts reveal about choosing a van

Start with the people and routines, then choose the footprint

A van’s length, height, and interior layout determine how much room remains for an aisle, bed, kitchen, bathroom, or work area. The Lorjor Explore owners connect their extended high-roof Transit choice to their planned layout and heights; Bor’s shorter Sprinter design, by contrast, prioritizes keeping an open walkway. These examples point to a useful planning order: list who will live in the van and what they do every day, then see which vehicle can accommodate those needs without compromising the space you use most.

Decide how the bed earns its space

These builds show several ways to make sleeping space do double duty: a U-shaped lounge that becomes a bed, a bed that converts to a table, a slide-out bed extended with seating cushions, or a folding factory bench retained as both seating and a bed. Compare not only the claimed sleeping size but also the work required to switch modes, where bedding goes during the day, and how much usable floor area each arrangement leaves open.

Choose bathroom facilities by how you will actually use them

An indoor shower and toilet claim meaningful floor area and require room for water and bathroom equipment. Lorjor Explore and Sara and Alex James include indoor shower facilities; Bor’s Sprinter retained a shower and toilet while protecting an aisle. A separate 144-inch Mini Bungalow layout described by Sara and Alex James omits a wet bath because its clients did not need an indoor shower. That is a reminder that bathroom space is a design choice, not an automatic requirement for every tiny home on wheels.

Treat electrical specifications as components, not an endurance rating

The two builds with listed solar and battery figures differ: Lorjor Explore reports 620W of solar and 400Ah of lithium storage, while Sara and Alex James report 300W and 300Ah. Neither tour supplies a standardized load test that would establish how long another household could live without hookups. Actual runtime depends on the system design and what it powers; the figures alone do not make the builds directly comparable as off-grid performance tests.

Consider adapting an existing conversion van

“Stan” shows an alternative to removing everything and beginning again: keep factory furniture that works, remove pieces that do not, and use existing storage intelligently. That can be a practical route when evaluating a used conversion van, but the example is a design choice rather than evidence that every older van will have the condition or layout you need.

Plan the build so the process remains manageable

Construction time varies with the vehicle, the scope of work, and the builder. The Fites describe completing their conversion in just over three months, but that is one project’s reported timeline, not a general schedule. Their advice is simple: “Give yourself enough time so it remains fun every step of the way,” as quoted by The Fites. Read their conversion account.
