For a used luxury SUV shortlist, CARFAX’s 2026 reliability ranking names the Acura RDX, Lexus UX, Lexus GX, Infiniti QX50, BMW X3, Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne as its top seven. Its figures estimate unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models; they do not show that every example costs less than $40,000 or that repairs will be inexpensive. Because the title gives no budget ceiling, this article uses $40,000 as a clearly labeled shopping lens, not a promise that all seven fit it.
What “reliable” and “affordable” mean here
Reliability rankings measure different things, so their results should be read separately. CARFAX estimates five-year unexpected-repair likelihood using maintenance records and model-year context. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) counts owner-reported problems per 100 vehicles after three years. iSeeCars gives longevity-focused ratings based on useful lifespan and the likelihood of reaching 200,000 miles. None of these measures, by itself, tells you the likely repair bill or total cost of owning a particular used SUV.
The $40,000 ceiling is an editorial shopping lens, not a budget stated in the title. iSeeCars publishes a ranking specifically for used luxury SUVs under $40,000, but that list uses its own method and categories. CARFAX’s seven-model list does not establish that every model year, trim or vehicle example can be bought under that ceiling. Check local listings and compare the exact vehicle’s price, mileage, condition, insurance, fuel use and expected maintenance.
Seven luxury SUVs in CARFAX’s 2026 reliability ranking
CARFAX published its ranking on August 17, 2026, using billions of U.S. maintenance records and focusing on average unexpected-repair likelihood over five years for model years 2019–2023. The figures below are model-level averages, not an individual vehicle’s failure probability or a measure of repair severity. CARFAX reports an 11.0% average for the luxury SUV segment.
#1 Best Overall
| Rank | Model | CARFAX average unexpected-repair likelihood | Model-year context noted by CARFAX |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Acura RDX | 2.5% | CARFAX says reliability improved by the end of the second generation in 2018. |
| 2 | Lexus UX | 2.8% | CARFAX notes a reliability dip in 2023 after a new infotainment system arrived; it also describes the cabin as tiny. |
| 3 | Lexus GX | 3.0% | CARFAX says reliability improved after the 2020 refresh, then dipped in 2023, the final second-generation year. |
| 4 | Infiniti QX50 | 4.7% | CARFAX says repair statistics have been consistently strong since its 2014 debut; check the individual year and service records. |
| 5 | BMW X3 | 4.9% | CARFAX says later years improved, particularly several years into the third generation (2018–2024). |
| 6 | Porsche Macan | 5.0% | CARFAX says unexpected repairs declined in 2018 and 2021 as the model matured. |
| 7 | Porsche Cayenne | 5.2% | CARFAX describes a mixed historical record followed by excellent reliability in recent years on its page. |
CARFAX’s full ranking and methodology provide the model-level context. The percentages are useful for screening candidates, not for predicting the outcome for a vehicle with a particular history.
What the other reliability rankings add
J.D. Power: owner-reported problems after three years
J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS is based on responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles, collected from December 2024 through November 2025. It examines 184 problem areas across nine categories. The study reports 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) industry-wide and 217 PP100 for premium vehicles; lower scores mean fewer reported problems. Lexus led premium brands at 151 PP100, and the Lexus GX and UX were among the model-level award recipients. These results are separate from CARFAX’s five-year repair-likelihood estimates, not a confirmation of those percentages. See J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS release for the study details.
iSeeCars: longevity and a defined price ceiling
For shoppers whose ceiling is $40,000, iSeeCars’ 2026 page ranks used SUVs by its longevity-focused Reliability Rating. It says its analysis draws on more than 312 million vehicles and considers useful lifespan and the chance of reaching 200,000 miles. Its category leaders include:
- 2024 Acura RDX: 7.9/10 among used luxury small/compact SUVs.
- 2020 Lexus GX 460: 8.2/10 among used midsize and three-row luxury SUVs.
- 2021 Lexus RX 350: 8.0/10 among used luxury crossover SUVs.
- 2020 Lexus RX 450h: 8.6/10 among used luxury hybrid SUVs.
- 2025 BMW X1: 7.7/10, the highest-ranked subcompact entry.
These are different categories and ratings from CARFAX’s repair-likelihood ranking; do not treat the scores as interchangeable. The iSeeCars under-$40,000 ranking can help identify candidates within a stated price range, but confirm current local asking prices and the individual vehicle’s condition.

How to choose among the candidates
Start with the practical fit, then use reliability rankings as one screening input rather than as a purchase guarantee.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- Set the actual price limit. Decide whether it means the vehicle’s asking price or your full purchase budget, including taxes, fees and immediate maintenance. Compare listings in your area rather than assuming a model or trim fits.
- Choose the body and cabin that work for you. The UX is a small-cabin choice, while the GX appears in iSeeCars’ midsize and three-row categories. Verify seating, cargo space and access in the exact year and trim.
- Compare exact model years and powertrains. Reliability can change across a generation or after an update. iSeeCars’ cited examples include gasoline and hybrid models, but their scores apply to their own categories and methodology.
- Review the specific vehicle’s history. Check maintenance records, mileage, prior damage and open recalls by VIN. A favorable model average cannot substitute for a well-documented example.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess condition and likely near-term service needs before you commit.
- Estimate ownership costs beyond the price. Compare insurance, fuel and expected maintenance for the specific vehicle. The rankings cited here do not establish total ownership costs across the seven CARFAX models.
