California’s scenic drives range from a winding coastal highway to seasonal Sierra passes, desert roads, and quiet redwood corridors. These seven routes offer different kinds of scenery and different planning demands; choose by season and driving style, then check official road updates for your travel dates.
How to choose a California scenic drive
Start with the landscape you want and the season you can travel. Tioga Road is a high-country crossing with a seasonal opening; desert routes are more comfortable in cooler weather; coastal and lower-elevation options may be more practical outside the Sierra season. Road conditions can change after any guide is published, so confirm status before setting out.

There is no evidence-based single “best” route for every driver. The options below are organized by scenery and character, not ranked. Distances and drive times are not directly comparable: winding roads, stops, and conditions affect how long a trip takes.
Seven scenic drives to consider
1. Highway 1 through Big Sur: coastal cliffs and landmark views
The Carmel-to-San Simeon stretch pairs dramatic coastline with stops such as Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls. It is better suited to an unhurried day with time for designated vista points than to a quick transit. Services are sparse along remote stretches, so plan ahead.

Highway 1 reopened at Regent’s Slide on January 14, 2026, restoring access between Carmel and Cambria, according to the Governor of California. About 6,000 cubic yards of mud and debris were removed from the repair site before reopening. That reopening is not a guarantee of current access: landslides, construction, or other incidents can bring new restrictions. Check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before departure. Use designated vista points and legal parking areas; parking on or near Bixby Bridge is prohibited, as Visit California’s Highway 1 guide advises.
2. Tioga Road through Yosemite: a seasonal Sierra crossing
Tioga Road crosses Yosemite’s high country between Crane Flat and Tioga Pass, passing meadows and mountain scenery. The National Park Service describes it as Yosemite’s most famous scenic drive and gives the distance as 46 miles (62 km) between those points. The road typically opens from late May or early June through November, but snow and operating conditions determine the actual dates. Check NPS Tioga Road information and Yosemite current conditions before planning around the crossing.
Rank #2
Snow or ice can trigger chain or cable requirements. Yosemite also advises visitors to use maps and does not recommend relying on GPS for directions in and around the park. Keep an offline map or current California road atlas as a planning backup, not as a substitute for live closure information.
3. US 395 through the Eastern Sierra: mountain-front landscapes
US 395 runs past Mono Lake and the Mammoth Lakes turnoff, with the high peaks of the Eastern Sierra defining much of the drive. It works as a long-distance route between the Tahoe region and desert parks, or as a backbone for a trip with stops along the way. The travel overview describes it as a year-round option, but that does not mean every segment or destination is free of winter weather or disruption. Check road and construction conditions before traveling, especially on remote legs where services may be sparse.

4. Highway 89 on Lake Tahoe’s west shore: a compact lake drive
This shorter option follows Tahoe’s west shore and includes views toward Emerald Bay. It suits a day when you want lake-and-mountain scenery without committing to a long cross-state route. In winter, check for chain requirements and closures before leaving; conditions in mountain terrain can change quickly.
5. Artists Drive and SR 190 in Death Valley: colorful hills and desert basin
Artists Drive is a one-way loop through mineral-colored hills; SR 190 and the road toward Badwater Basin provide another signature desert drive. The wider desert setting makes this most appealing in cooler months. Summer heat can make a drive hazardous, so plan conservatively and check conditions rather than treating a scenic itinerary as a safety assessment.

Caltrans provides highway information by route number. Its SR 190 page showed no reported restrictions in its area at 5:51 p.m. on October 7, 2026; that was a time-specific snapshot, not a forecast or a guarantee for another date. Check Caltrans SR 190 road information and Death Valley conditions before setting out. Services can be sparse on remote stretches.
6. Palms to Pines Highway: from desert edge to forest
Near Palm Springs, this route climbs from the desert into pine forest and can work as a half-day loop. Its changing elevation gives the drive a different feel from the open desert basin below. Check seasonal weather and road notices before going; conditions at higher elevations may differ from those at the start.

7. Avenue of the Giants: a slow drive among redwoods
This 31-mile route parallels Highway 101 through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, trading open coastal views for a close-up passage among redwoods. Its character invites a slower pace and stops rather than a quick dash between destinations. The route length is reported by the California scenic-drive overview.

Season matters as much as scenery. The Sierra crossing on Tioga Road has a defined but variable seasonal access window; winter mountain driving elsewhere may involve chains or closures. The scenic-drive overview characterizes Highway 1 and US 395 as year-round options, but individual incidents and weather can still disrupt travel. Desert drives are generally better suited to cooler months, and summer heat can be dangerous.
Quick Recap
- Before a coastal or state-highway drive: use Caltrans QuickMap for current restrictions, closures, and incidents. Caltrans also lists traveler information at its road information page.
- Before Yosemite: check current park conditions and the Tioga Road page; do not assume the pass is open based on a typical seasonal window.
- For navigation: have an offline map or paper atlas available where useful, while relying on official live sources for closures and restrictions.
- For remote sections: plan fuel, food, water, and stops around the services actually available on your intended segment. Sparse services are noted for Big Sur, US 395, and Death Valley; verify local details for your dates.
