The extra ratio can help balance acceleration, engine speed and cruising, but six is not a universally perfect number: how well a gearbox works depends on its ratios, final drive, engine and intended use.
What does “six-speed manual” mean?
A manual transmission lets the driver select gears with a hand-operated shift lever and use a foot-operated clutch. Ford’s glossary describes it as a “system in which gears are selected by the driver by means of a hand-operated gearshift lever and a foot-operated clutch.” A six-speed manual has six forward ratios; the driver chooses among them as speed and driving conditions change.
When the driver presses the clutch, the engine is temporarily disconnected from the transmission so a different gear can be selected. Each gear changes the relationship between engine speed and the transmission’s output speed. Lower gears generally provide greater mechanical reduction, which helps the car pull away and accelerate. Higher gears can let the engine turn more slowly at a given road speed. The final-drive ratio also affects that relationship; Ford defines it in its glossary as the relationship between driveshaft revolutions and axle rotation.
Why add a sixth gear?
An additional ratio gives engineers another option when choosing how closely to space the gears and how the car behaves across its engine’s useful speed range. Depending on the design, sixth may be a relatively tall ratio used mainly for cruising, or it may remain useful under load. Its effect cannot be judged from the gear count alone.

For example, Ford’s 2024 European-specification Transit Courier petrol has a sixth ratio of 0.690:1, compared with 3.727:1 in first. Its listed diesel version has a sixth ratio of 0.622:1. Those figures illustrate two particular configurations, not a standard ratio for six-speed manuals. The petrol version’s listed final drive is 4.267; the diesel’s is 3.824. Ford’s 2024 Transit Courier technical sheet also presents declared consumption, emissions and range under stated EU test procedures. Those test figures should not be treated as proof that the sixth gear alone improves fuel economy.
Why six is not automatically “perfect”
The title’s “perfect number” is a hook, not a universal engineering finding. A sixth ratio can be poorly matched to the engine, the other gear ratios or the car’s intended use. Widely spaced ratios may leave the engine outside its most useful range after a shift; a tall cruising gear may feel sluggish when the car needs to accelerate without downshifting.

One period example is Car and Driver’s 2016 U.S. road test of the Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T with a manual. Reviewer Michael Simari described its gearing as tall and widely spaced, and said the car could feel breathless in ordinary driving. The review also reported a one-mpg EPA-cycle disadvantage versus the automatic in the reviewed configuration. Six-speed manuals use different ratio sets
“Six-speed” identifies the number of forward ratios, not a fixed gearbox design. Ford’s 2024 European Mustang specification lists two six-speed manual configurations, Getrag MT-82 and Tremec TR-3160, with distinct ratios. Their listed sixth ratios are 0.622:1 and 0.63:1, respectively. The small difference between those figures does not establish that one set is better; the other ratios and the vehicle configuration matter too. Ford’s 2020 European-specification Puma ST is another example of a configuration with a six-speed manual. Its specification sheet lists a ratio set and an optional Quaife limited-slip differential, illustrating that the gearbox is one part of a broader vehicle setup. How to compare two manual transmissions
To assess whether a six-speed suits a particular car, compare more than the number of gears. Useful details include:

- All six ratios and their spacing: Examine the change from each gear to the next, not just first and sixth.
- Final-drive ratio: It combines with the selected gear ratio to affect engine speed and wheel torque.
- Engine characteristics: Torque and the useful RPM range influence whether the gaps between gears feel well matched.
- Purpose and vehicle: Mass, typical driving conditions and whether the car is intended for cruising, performance or carrying loads all matter.
- Features and driving feel: Shift action and features such as rev-matching can affect the experience, but do not define the gearing’s efficiency.
- Comparable consumption figures: Compare the same test procedure and vehicle configuration. A gear count by itself does not prove lower real-world fuel use.
Without a particular car’s tire size, gear ratios, final drive and operating conditions, a precise engine-RPM-at-speed calculation would be misleading.

It can allow lower engine speed at a given road speed in some designs, but sixth gear alone does not establish lower fuel consumption. The full gearing, engine, vehicle and driving conditions matter. Consumption figures also need to come from comparable test procedures and configurations; Ford’s Transit Courier figures, for example, are declared under specified EU procedures rather than a universal guarantee for every driver.
