Mazda’s rotary-engine story runs from the Cosmo Sport, its first rotary vehicle in 1967, to sports cars, a luxury coupe and a Le Mans-winning race car. These six picks are ranked for engineering significance, character and historical impact—not as a claim that they are the six best rotary cars from every manufacturer. Mazda’s official history provides the strongest support for this lineup, and the 787B is a competition car, not a road car.
How these six rotary cars were selected
The rotary engine’s appeal was never confined to one kind of vehicle. Mazda used it to make an engineering statement in a small sports car, build a more accessible sports-car line, pursue luxury and technical complexity, and compete at the highest level of endurance racing. The models below show those different purposes. Mazda’s published histories establish the company’s own milestones and specifications; they are not independent comparative road tests.
Mazda says it began technical cooperation with NSU/Wankel on rotary engines in July 1961, before introducing its first rotary vehicle in 1967. The company’s corporate chronology records one million cumulative rotary-engine vehicles in 1978; in 2023, Mazda said it had produced more than two million. Those company figures mark the scale of the program, not a measure of any individual model’s quality.
Six standout Mazda rotary-engine cars
1. Mazda Cosmo Sport (110S): the engineering showcase
The Cosmo Sport was Mazda’s first rotary-engine vehicle and one of the earliest ways the company demonstrated that the Wankel design could power a production sports car. Mazda describes it as a two-seat sports car with a two-rotor engine. Its official history lists displacement as 491 cc × 2 and output as 110 hp. Those are manufacturer-published figures; the horsepower number should not be compared casually with later market-specific net ratings, which may use different measurement conventions.

The Cosmo Sport earns its place for establishing the identity of Mazda’s rotary program. It is the origin point for the company’s later sports cars, and a striking example of a new engine concept being made into a road-going vehicle.
2. Mazda RX-7: the rotary sports car for a wider audience
When Mazda introduced the RX-7 in 1978, it paired a 12A two-rotor rotary engine with a front-midship layout. Mazda describes the development theme as “pursuit of driving pleasure.” The RX-7 mattered not just as another rotary-powered coupe, but as the model that carried the idea beyond a single engineering showcase into a dedicated sports-car line.
Its place in this list rests on that combination of purpose and reach: Mazda made the rotary the defining feature of a recognizable sports-car family, rather than reserving it for a rare halo model.

3. Eunos Cosmo: rotary ambition in a luxury coupe
The Eunos Cosmo took the rotary in a different direction from the RX-7. Mazda identifies it as the world’s first mass-production vehicle equipped with both a three-rotor rotary engine and sequential twin turbochargers. That makes it the clearest expression here of rotary engineering applied to luxury and technical ambition rather than a lightweight sports-car brief.
It earns a place for the scale of that production-car milestone. The combination is unusual enough that the Eunos Cosmo stands apart even within Mazda’s own rotary history.
4. Mazda RX-8: a later interpretation of the rotary sports car
The RX-8 carried Mazda’s rotary sports-car idea into a later era. In describing its design aims, Mazda highlights side intake and exhaust ports. That engineering detail distinguishes the RX-8’s approach from a simple return to the RX-7 formula. Mazda says production ended in 2012.

The RX-8 belongs in this selection as evidence that Mazda continued developing rotary-powered sports cars after the RX-7 line, with a different design direction and a distinct place in the company’s history.
5. Mazda 787B: the rotary that won Le Mans
The 787B is not a road car; it is a competition prototype, and it should be judged by a different standard from the production models here. Its achievement is unambiguous: Mazda’s rotary-powered 787B won the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall in 1991. That victory gave the rotary a place in endurance-racing history and remains the strongest competition result in this group.

It belongs on a list of Mazda’s best rotary-powered cars because “best” can mean more than road-car refinement or production significance. In the 787B’s case, it means a landmark result in one of racing’s most demanding events.

6. Mazda’s rotary program: why the final slot is not a cross-marque pick
A sixth car should not be added simply to make the headline’s number work. The available primary-source record supports a Mazda-centered list, but does not establish a sixth model strongly enough to justify a broader, cross-marque ranking. In particular, this selection does not make a judgment about the NSU Ro 80 or other non-Mazda rotary cars without suitable primary or authoritative historical evidence.
That limitation matters because “best” depends on the criteria. A fair cross-marque list would need comparable evidence about each contender’s purpose, engineering, historical role and record—not just the fact that it used a rotary engine.

Mazda’s 1978 chronology records one million cumulative rotary-engine vehicles, and its 2023 release says the company had produced more than two million. These figures capture the longevity of the program across many vehicles; they do not show that every rotary model shared the same design, purpose or market position.
In a 2007 anniversary release, Hisakazu Imaki, then Mazda Representative Director, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, said, “The rotary engine symbolizes Mazda.” That is a company leader’s statement of the engine’s importance to the brand, rather than an independent assessment of its merits.
Mazda’s 2023 announcement establishes that the company said it had restarted rotary-engine production, but it does not establish availability in every market today. Nor do the cited histories provide a fair model-to-model comparison of reliability, maintenance costs, fuel economy or present-day usability. Those questions require evidence beyond historical milestones and specifications.
