6 Honda and Acura Models That Could Benefit From Honda’s New V6 Hybrid

Honda says it plans to introduce a new V6-based hybrid system for large North American vehicles in 2029, but it has not named the production models that will use it. The four Honda candidates below are reasoned possibilities based on their current roles; the two Acura entries are unnamed future SUV applications, not confirmed nameplates or confirmed users of this V6 hardware.

What Honda has actually announced

In its May 14, 2026 business briefing, Honda said it plans to begin launching next-generation hybrid models in 2027 and aims to offer 15 of them globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030. The company also said large-size hybrids for North America, in the D-segment or above, are planned for 2029. Honda’s briefing summary and its presentation PDF describe a newly developed V6 engine paired with new drive units and a battery pack.

Honda’s stated aims for the system include “powerful driving and towing capability” and “highly efficient environmental performance.” The public materials do not provide output, torque, fuel-economy figures, towing ratings, pricing, or production applications. They also do not say that any of the six possibilities below will receive the system.

Honda separately targets a cost reduction of more than 30% versus the hybrid system introduced in 2023, and a fuel-economy improvement of more than 10% when its next-generation hybrid system is combined with a next-generation platform and electric AWD unit. These are company targets for its next-generation hybrid approach, not measured results for a V6 production vehicle.

Four Honda models worth watching

Honda’s current lineup includes the Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline, and Odyssey. Their size and roles make them sensible models to assess against a large hybrid system, especially one for which Honda has highlighted towing capability. That is a product-role assessment, not evidence of engineering compatibility or a planned rollout. Honda’s current model lineup does not identify any of them as a V6-hybrid recipient.

Current model Why it is a candidate to watch What is confirmed
Honda Pilot A large Honda SUV is a natural vehicle to consider when assessing a system Honda describes for large vehicles and towing. Pilot is in Honda’s current lineup; V6-hybrid application is not announced.
Honda Passport Its SUV role makes it another plausible vehicle to watch for a future large-hybrid application. Passport is in Honda’s current lineup; V6-hybrid application is not announced.
Honda Ridgeline As Honda’s pickup, it is relevant to a powertrain announcement that expressly mentions towing capability. Ridgeline is in Honda’s current lineup; V6-hybrid application is not announced.
Honda Odyssey Its large-vehicle role makes it a possibility to monitor, although the announcement does not point specifically to minivans. Odyssey is in Honda’s current lineup; V6-hybrid application is not announced.

Why these are possibilities, not predictions

Honda has set a broad vehicle-size and regional frame—large vehicles in North America—but has not published a model-by-model schedule. The briefing’s towing language makes capability and vehicle role useful comparison points, but it does not establish which vehicles will receive the hardware. No reliable ranking of these four candidates is possible from the published details.

Two possible Acura SUV applications—but no named models

Honda also showed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype and said it was scheduled to go on sale within two years of the May 2026 briefing. That announcement establishes a future Acura hybrid SUV direction, but it does not connect the prototype to the new V6 system. Honda’s public V6 material and the Acura prototype announcement are parallel plans, not confirmation of shared hardware.

For that reason, the remaining two possibilities are best described as unnamed future Acura SUV applications, rather than assigning the powertrain to the MDX or another specific vehicle. Acura’s vehicle page says it currently has no hybrid or EV models in production and that further details on SH-AWD integration will come as the prototype approaches release. It does not identify a production nameplate or provide technical specifications for the prototype.

Acura possibility 1: the announced Hybrid SUV Prototype’s production form

The prototype is the clearest Acura hybrid SUV to watch because Acura itself has shown it and described an intended sales window. Whether its production form uses Honda’s V6 hybrid system remains unknown.

Acura possibility 2: another future Acura SUV

A second future Acura SUV could be considered at the brand level, but no official source cited here names one or links it to this V6 system. Treat this as a broad possibility, not a forecast about a particular Acura model.

What to watch for next

  • Named applications: Honda has not named production vehicles for the V6 system. A model announcement is needed before any candidate can be treated as confirmed.
  • Technical specifications: The published materials do not establish horsepower, torque, fuel economy, towing capacity, price, or vehicle-specific performance.
  • Acura powertrain details: Acura has not confirmed that the Hybrid SUV Prototype will use this V6 hardware; its production identity and specifications remain unstated.
  • How to interpret efficiency targets: Honda’s more-than-10% target depends on the next-generation platform and electric AWD unit as described in its briefing. It is not a V6-model EPA estimate or a guarantee for any individual vehicle.

For context only, American Honda reported that more than 400,000 CR-Vs were sold for a second consecutive year and that hybrid versions accounted for 54% of sales in its 2026 U.S. business outlook reporting 2025 sales. That demonstrates demand for Honda hybrids, but it does not indicate that the CR-V—or any other current model—will receive the new V6 system. American Honda’s outlook provides the sales context.
