The available evidence supports six German saloon model lines worth considering used: the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series. It does not support a responsible list of ten. Within any of these lines, the exact generation, engine, service history and condition matter more than the badge; treat inspection statistics as context, not a guarantee about an individual car.
How to read the evidence before choosing
Two different kinds of data help frame these choices, but they answer different questions. TÜV inspection results report the share of cars in an age cohort found with significant defects during periodic technical inspections. ADAC breakdown statistics describe roadside failures. Neither is a complete measure of long-term reliability or ownership cost, and neither predicts whether a particular used car is sound.
TÜV Rheinland’s 2026 summary draws on about 9.5 million periodic inspections across 216 models; 21.5% of cars overall failed for significant defects. That overall figure is not a German-saloon-specific rate. The summary names the Mercedes-Benz C-Class as the leading mid-range model among two- and three-year-old cars in that year’s tests. ADAC’s 2026 breakdown report says the 12-volt starter battery accounted for 45.4% of breakdowns evaluated for 2025. That is an all-vehicle breakdown-cause share, not a failure rate for any of the six models. For an individual car, check battery age and condition as part of a broader inspection. Six German saloons to put on a used-car shortlist
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The C-Class is a familiar German mid-size choice, and TÜV Rheinland’s 2026 summary gives the recent two- and three-year-old cohort a strong result in its class. For the W205, AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based overview reports significant-defect rates of 3.2% at 2–3 years, 7.0% at 4–5 years, 11.0% at 6–7 years and 18.5% at 8–9 years. Use the generation and age band that match the car you are viewing. A favourable result for newer cars does not erase the need to examine older examples, their inspection records and their repair history.

BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series is another established mid-size option. AUTO BILD’s used-car overview discusses the F30 generation, sold from 2012 to 2021, as durable while also identifying possible weaknesses such as oil leaks and recall subjects. Its TÜV-based overview reports significant-defect rates of 6.1% at 2–3 years, 10.4% at 4–5 years, 15.1% at 6–7 years, 19.1% at 8–9 years and 23.3% at 10–11 years. For a specific 3 Series, confirm engine and build date, check the emissions class, and ask for evidence that applicable recalls were completed. Review the service record for the car’s exact variant rather than assuming every engine or year shares the same risks.

Audi A4
The A4 is a common mid-size alternative. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based overview reports B9 significant-defect rates of 3.8% at 2–3 years, 9.6% at 4–5 years, 11.1% at 6–7 years and 14.4% at 8–9 years. Verify the model year and variant before comparing cars: a generation label alone does not tell you the exact powertrain, maintenance history or condition.

Audi A6
The A6 competes in the upper-mid-size class with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. ADAC’s model overview describes front-wheel drive as the standard configuration, with quattro available on some stronger engines. A 2025 TÜV comparison found strong early inspection results for the C8, but noted that age-cohort data for it were limited at the time. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The E-Class is another upper-mid-size option. In AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison of the W213 E-Class, BMW G30 5 Series and Audi C8 A6, the E-Class held up relatively consistently into the later inspection cohort. The same comparison points to axle suspension and steering as areas to examine. BMW 5 Series
The 5 Series shares the upper-mid-size class with the A6 and E-Class. AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison found a weaker significant-defect pattern for the G30 than for the E-Class and A6 in the compared TÜV cohorts. Its 2026 used-car check lists potential faults and recall subjects, including pre-facelift timing-chain damage, electric water-pump problems, xDrive drivetrain issues, electronic parking-brake control-unit problems and high oil consumption. Listed recall subjects include EGR cooler fire risk, fuel-filter overheating, VANOS fasteners and brake-servo failure. These are prompts for checks by exact generation, production date and VIN—not proof that a given car has a defect. Ask for repair documentation and confirm recall completion for the exact VIN. Do not assume every 5 Series shares the listed risks.

Start with your intended use and budget, then compare cars that are genuinely similar in age, class, mileage and powertrain. The evidence here does not establish comparable fuel costs, insurance, depreciation or total ownership costs across these model lines, so it cannot support a cost-based ranking.
- Mid-size choices: Compare the C-Class, 3 Series and A4 by exact generation, engine, service history and inspection record. The C-Class’s recent TÜV recognition applies to two- and three-year-old cars; older-car figures differ by cohort.
- More cabin and luggage space: Consider the A6, E-Class or 5 Series, checking each car’s generation, powertrain and condition. The cited inspection comparisons do not establish that one is cheaper to own than another.
- Any model: Prefer a documented, well-maintained example with a credible inspection history over a better-sounding model reputation. The available figures are not a substitute for assessing the car in front of you.
What to check before signing

- Identify the exact car. Confirm model year, generation, engine, mileage and equipment against the documents and the vehicle itself.
- Review its history. Ask about accident damage and inspect available service records, periodic-inspection reports and repair invoices for gaps or inconsistencies.
- Check recalls by VIN. Ask the seller for documentation of completed work relevant to the car’s exact production date and variant.
- Inspect and test-drive it. Check for visible leaks and other warning signs, pay attention to how it drives, and arrange an independent inspection if you are not equipped to assess it. An OBD-II reader can optionally read stored fault codes, but it is not a substitute for a thorough inspection or proof that the car is sound.
- Decide from the evidence for that car. If the paperwork is incomplete, a concern remains unresolved, or the car’s condition does not match the seller’s account, do not let a model’s reputation decide for you.
