Android Auto’s default settings are built for broad compatibility, not for every driver’s habits. A few changes can reduce launcher clutter, limit message interruptions, prevent unwanted media playback, and make switching between navigation and audio easier.
On current Android phones, Android Auto is integrated into the system rather than installed as a separate app. While parked, open Settings, search for Android Auto, and tap Android Auto settings. Menu names can vary by phone manufacturer, Android version, Android Auto release, vehicle, and whether you connect by USB or wirelessly. Google’s setup instructions are available at Google Support.

1. Turn on “Show quick controls for apps”
Android Auto can keep media controls and navigation directions available while another supported app occupies the main screen. That means fewer trips back and forth between Maps, music, podcasts, and other compatible apps.

- Search for Android Auto.
- Tap Android Auto settings.
- Look in the display or interface section for Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto.
- Turn it on, then reconnect Android Auto or return to the dashboard if necessary.
The exact location and label may differ. This setting provides quick access to supported controls; it does not guarantee a second full app window or split-screen layout on every vehicle display. Screen size, Android Auto software, and the car’s implementation affect how it appears. Google explains the feature in its guide to Android Auto screens and apps.

2. Put the apps you actually use first
Android Auto’s launcher may contain navigation, audio, calling, messaging, and other compatible apps you rarely use in the car. Reordering it makes the apps you use most easier to find and reduces visual scanning while driving.
- Open Android Auto settings on the phone.
- Tap Customize launcher.
- Open Launcher sorting, or the equivalent launcher-order control.
- Select Custom order, if that option is available.
- Move your primary navigation, audio, and communication apps toward the top.
- Hide or remove unnecessary apps where the interface allows it.
Reordering cannot make an incompatible phone app appear in Android Auto. App availability can depend on Android Auto compatibility, your Google account, personalization settings, region, and developer support. See Google’s list and installation guidance for Android Auto-compatible apps.
If an installed app is missing
On some Samsung phones, an app may disappear because the phone temporarily disables apps that have not been used recently. Open the app on the phone first. If it still disappears, check the phone’s battery settings for controls such as Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. Google documents this issue in its guide to finding an app missing from the Android Auto launcher.
3. Stop unnecessary message notifications
Android Auto can display incoming message notifications and read messages aloud through Gemini or Google Assistant. That can be useful, but it can also create visual interruptions or expose private conversations to passengers.

In Android Auto settings, look for notification controls such as:
- Show message notifications
- Show group conversations
- Notifications with Assistant
Choose based on how you drive:
- Turn off Show message notifications for fewer visual interruptions.
- Turn off Show group conversations if group-chat alerts are rarely useful behind the wheel.
- Turn off Notifications with Assistant if you do not want messages announced aloud.
These controls affect Android Auto’s behavior, not necessarily notifications on the phone itself. You may still be able to access messages through the phone or Android Auto interface. Google’s current guidance on message handling is available at Send and receive messages with Android Auto.
4. Disable AI message summaries if privacy matters
Some Android Auto users may see Play AI message summaries alongside the other messaging controls. Turn it off if you want message notifications without an AI-generated summary being read aloud.
This is a useful middle ground: you can keep selected message notifications while avoiding a spoken summary that passengers might hear. Turn it on only if hands-free summaries are genuinely useful to you and you are comfortable with the feature.

The exact control and behavior depend on factors including Android Auto’s release, Gemini or Google Assistant availability, language, account, device, and rollout status. Google describes the current transition and availability in its messaging guidance; Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, but the experience is not identical everywhere.
5. Choose whether music should start automatically
Under the Startup section, Android Auto may offer Start music automatically or a similarly named control. When enabled, it can resume music, podcasts, or other media when the car starts.
Turn it on if:
- You nearly always listen to media while driving.
- You want playback to resume after restarting the car or stopping for fuel.
Leave it off if:
- You often carry passengers or start the car in a garage.
- You prefer to choose content manually.
- Several media apps compete to resume playback.
Automatic startup does not guarantee that every service will resume at the exact position you expect. The app must support Android Auto, be signed in, and be configured correctly. Some services also require a paid or premium subscription. If the wrong app starts, check which media app was last active and whether other media apps are signed in. 6. Decide whether Android Auto should start while the phone is locked
Start Android Auto while locked, usually found under Startup, can make connecting faster by allowing Android Auto to begin without manually unlocking the phone.

It is a convenience setting, not a universally reliable one. Someone with access to the connected vehicle may be able to use Android Auto functions without first unlocking the phone, so privacy- and security-conscious drivers may prefer to leave it off.
Why locked startup may fail
A March 30, 2026 response from an Android Auto team specialist in the Google Android Auto Community says that Advanced Protection Mode’s USB Protection can prevent Android Auto from starting over USB while the phone is locked. In that situation, the setting can be enabled but still fail by design.
If locked startup stops working:
- Unlock the phone before connecting it.
- Check whether Advanced Protection or USB Protection is enabled.
- For wired Android Auto, try another USB cable and vehicle USB port.
- For wireless Android Auto, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are enabled during setup.
- Restart the phone and vehicle system, then re-pair the connection if the issue began after an update.
Do not weaken the phone’s security protections casually just to preserve locked startup. The safer workaround is to unlock the phone before connecting.

Android Auto’s Developer settings are not a general performance booster. Google documents them primarily for diagnostics, bug reporting, and experimental controls. Changing arbitrary options is not an established fix for lag, touch response, display scaling, or disconnections.

If you always use a USB cable and want to prevent wireless connection attempts, you can review the Wireless Android Auto option:
- Open Settings and search for Android Auto.
- Tap Android Auto settings.
- Tap Version to expand Version and permission info.
- Tap Version and permission info 10 times.
- Confirm Allow development settings?
- Open the three-dot menu and tap Developer settings.
Only disable wireless Android Auto if you actually use wired Android Auto and want wired-only behavior. Wireless connections depend on vehicle compatibility, Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi, Location Services, phone support, and the vehicle’s implementation. To undo experimental changes, reverse the option or use Quit developer mode. Google’s complete developer-settings path is in its Android Auto bug-report guide.
Quick troubleshooting after changing settings
- Android Auto is missing from Settings: Search Settings for “Android Auto.” Compatible phones integrate it into Android rather than requiring a separate download.
- The car does not start Android Auto: Confirm that the vehicle and phone support it. If the car’s infotainment system is the limitation, contact the vehicle manufacturer.
- USB fails: Unlock the phone, try a different data-capable cable and USB port, and restart both the phone and vehicle system.
- Wireless pairing fails: Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, then re-pair the phone.
- An app is absent: Confirm that it is Android Auto-compatible and open it on the phone in case Samsung’s unused-app controls disabled it.
- A change is not visible: Return to the Android Auto dashboard or disconnect and reconnect. Some changes do not appear until the next session.
Settings and labels can change after an Android, Android Auto, or vehicle-infotainment update. Review only the defaults that match your needs: fewer distractions, stronger privacy, automatic media, faster startup, or wired-only connectivity. There is no reason to change all six just because they are available.
