For available all-wheel drive
The Escape Hybrid offers a choice between standard FWD and optional AWD. The cited 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrid models and the described Tucson Hybrid setup have standard AWD. Confirm the configuration on the exact vehicle listing; a model name alone is not enough to establish drivetrain.
For fuel economy
The Niro has the highest stated maximum in this group—up to 53 mpg combined—but that figure depends on trim and model year, and the Niro is FWD only. The other maximums should also be treated as variant-specific estimates rather than guaranteed real-world results.

The Crosstrek is a plug-in hybrid, not a conventional hybrid, and the average price does not guarantee local availability. The same page lists Kia Niro, Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid, and MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid entries with scores marked “Coming soon” or “Not Available,” so those entries are not reliability rankings.
iSeeCars’ 2026 small-SUV page ranks the Escape Hybrid first under $25,000, followed by the CR-V Hybrid, Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, and Escape Plug-in Hybrid; its excerpt indicates a sixth entry without identifying it. The page separately ranks the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid first under $30,000. These categories and price limits should not be combined into one under-$25,000 list.

Consumer Reports’ indexed result says the 2024 Ford Escape Hybrid is less reliable than other cars from the same model year. The result describes survey charts covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots, but the underlying page was inaccessible. Treat this as limited, model-year-specific evidence—not a conclusion about other Escape Hybrid years.

- Set the real price ceiling. Compare local listings using the amount you can actually spend, including applicable taxes and fees, rather than relying on a published average or a national shortlist.
- Compare like with like. Note model year, trim, mileage, drivetrain, and whether the vehicle is a conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid. These differences affect both the comparison and whether the car meets your needs.
- Check the specific vehicle’s history and records. Review available vehicle-history information and maintenance records, and have the vehicle’s condition assessed by a qualified inspector before purchase.
- Verify model-specific details. Confirm the exact drivetrain, features, and fuel-economy estimate for the listed year and trim. A model’s maximum combined mpg is not a promise for every version or driver.
- Compare the candidates against your use. Prioritize AWD if you need it, the Niro if its FWD layout and efficiency suit you, or the RAV4 if its cargo utility matters most. Then choose based on the individual vehicle’s price, condition, and records.
