There is no evidence-based list of five universally “bad” 2025 Toyotas. The better way to use this guide is to match each vehicle to the buyer it serves: skip a configuration when its size, powertrain, or capabilities do not fit your needs, and consider a Toyota in the same practical category instead. This is a U.S.-market guide to 2025 models, not a reliability ranking. Check any specific vehicle’s recall status by VIN before buying.

Toyota’s 2025 U.S. lineup ranges from passenger cars and SUVs to minivans, trucks, electrified vehicles, and sports cars. A small car and a full-size truck are not meaningful substitutes for one another, so each pair below is based on a buyer’s use case—not a claim that one model is objectively worse. Toyota’s 2025 model-year overview lays out the breadth of the lineup.
The available evidence supports particular recall notices and equipment facts, but not a five-model reliability ranking or universal “buy instead” verdict. The “avoid” choice here means a vehicle or configuration to pass over if it mismatches your needs—not a model to reject solely because a recall exists.
Five Toyota choices to skip if they do not fit—and what to consider instead
1. Skip the 2025 Corolla if you need more room; consider the 2025 Camry
Who should skip it: Drivers who routinely carry several adults or want a midsize sedan’s more accommodating footprint. The Corolla is a compact car; moving up to a Camry is a category change, not a reliability upgrade established by the evidence here.

Alternative: Compare the 2025 Camry if you want a Toyota sedan with more space. Toyota lists Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as standard on the 2025 Corolla; equipment and trim details should still be checked against the exact car. See Toyota’s 2025 Corolla information.
2. Skip the 2025 RAV4 if you specifically want a plug-in hybrid; consider the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid
Who should skip it: Buyers whose priority is plug-in charging and who have a practical way to charge at home or work. The standard RAV4 and plug-in version differ in powertrain and use; a plug-in is not automatically the right choice if you cannot charge or do not want to manage that routine.

Alternative: Toyota renamed the RAV4 Prime to RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025. Use that model-year name when comparing listings. Toyota identifies Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 as standard on the 2025 RAV4; compare the precise equipment on the plug-in trim you are considering rather than assuming every version is identical. 3. Skip a 2025 Camry with an unresolved instrument-display recall; consider another inspected Camry or a Corolla
Who should skip it: A shopper looking at a specific Camry whose VIN is covered by an open combination-meter campaign and whose seller cannot confirm the remedy is complete. Toyota’s August 6, 2026 notice covers certain 2025–2026 Camrys with a 7-inch combination meter. The display could go blank at startup, with possible effects on turn signals, hazard lamps, and some warning buzzers. Toyota said dealers would update the combination-meter software at no charge. That notice does not establish that every Camry is affected.

Alternative: If you still want a midsize Toyota sedan, consider a Camry only after confirming its VIN and repair record; if a compact sedan meets your space needs, compare a Corolla instead. Toyota also issued a broader September 11, 2025 notice concerning blank combination-meter displays at startup in certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles, with dealer inspection and programming update or replacement depending on the vehicle. 4. Skip a 2025 Toyota with an unresolved backup-camera campaign; consider a comparable vehicle whose VIN is clear or repaired
Who should skip it: Any specific candidate vehicle whose VIN is covered by Toyota’s October 30, 2025 panoramic-view-monitor campaign and still lacks the repair. Toyota said the backup-camera image on certain vehicles could fail to display or briefly freeze while reversing. The announced remedy was a dealer software update to the Parking Assist ECU.

Alternative: There is no model-wide replacement justified by this notice. If you are comparing Toyotas in the same class, choose a vehicle with a verified completed repair or one not covered by the campaign, after checking the VIN. 5. Skip a used 2025 Tacoma if survey reliability is your sole deciding factor; compare it with the specific truck alternatives you can verify
Who should skip it: Buyers treating one reliability score or a model’s reputation as a guarantee about the exact truck. Consumer Reports’ Tacoma reliability information is based on subscriber survey responses covering 20 potential trouble areas; it is survey evidence, not controlled durability testing and not a prediction for an individual vehicle.

Alternative: Compare the Tacoma with other midsize trucks that meet your towing, payload, space, and budget needs, and inspect the actual vehicle’s maintenance and recall records. Recall campaigns apply to specified vehicles, not automatically to every example of a nameplate or model year. Toyota directs owners to its recall lookup or NHTSA’s lookup; enter the vehicle’s VIN or license plate, then ask the seller or dealer for documentation that any required repair was completed.
- Get the VIN for the exact vehicle you are considering.
- Check Toyota’s recall lookup or NHTSA recall lookup.
- If a campaign appears, confirm with a Toyota dealer whether the remedy is available and whether the vehicle’s repair record shows completion.
- For a used vehicle, include recall status and repair documentation in your pre-purchase review; do not assume a clean model-name search clears the individual VIN.
The August 2026 Camry notice is relevant when shopping for a 2025 Camry today, but it was issued after the 2025 model year. Likewise, Toyota’s May 2026 notice about certain 2024 non-hybrid Tundras is used-truck context, not evidence of a defect in 2025 Tundras. Toyota’s notice describes possible machining debris and main-bearing damage in the specified 2024 vehicles; it should not be generalized to a different model year.
