The U.S.-market 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz stands out for its retro-inspired design, flexible six- or seven-seat cabin, and available all-wheel drive. Its clearest compromises are limited long-distance range compared with many gasoline vans and the need to give up seats to reach its advertised maximum cargo capacity. Here are five reasons it appeals and two practical trade-offs to weigh.
1. Its retro design gives it a character few vans have
The ID. Buzz borrows the friendly, upright look of Volkswagen’s original Microbus, making it immediately recognizable among modern family vehicles. That appeal is subjective, but it is central to the van’s identity. Volkswagen U.S. executive Mark Gillies described it to TIME as: “The ID. Buzz looks friendly and happy.” That is his characterization, not an objective measure of the design.
2. The cabin can be configured for six or seven
Volkswagen lists six- and seven-seat configurations for the U.S. 2025 model, depending on trim and setup. That gives buyers a choice between layouts rather than a single fixed passenger arrangement. Check the exact vehicle’s seating configuration before you buy, especially if you need a particular number of usable seats or a specific arrangement for child seats.
3. It can carry substantial cargo when configured for it
Volkswagen advertises up to 145.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second row folded and the third row removed. That figure describes a cargo-focused setup, not the space available with all seats in use. The van’s flexibility is useful if you alternate between carrying people and hauling larger loads, but the maximum requires changing the seating configuration.

4. Available 4MOTION adds brisk acceleration
Volkswagen says the available 4MOTION all-wheel-drive ID. Buzz can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result, and 4MOTION is an available configuration rather than a standard feature on every version. Buyers considering AWD should confirm that the specific trim they want includes it.
5. It supports home charging and relatively quick DC stops
For owners who can charge at home, Level 2 charging can make everyday use convenient by replenishing the battery while the van is parked. Volkswagen also says the 2025 U.S. model can charge from 10% to 80% on a DC fast charger in as little as 26 minutes. “As little as” matters: Volkswagen’s technical data says charging time varies with the charger, battery temperature, initial state of charge, and other conditions. A compatible 240-volt Level 2 charger may suit home use, but installation depends on the vehicle connection, electrical service, circuit capacity, and local requirements.

What needs improving—or at least planning around?
1. Range can make long trips more planning-intensive
Volkswagen’s technical data gives the 2025 4MOTION an EPA-estimated total range of 231 miles. Separately, Consumer Reports measured 244 miles in its 70-mph highway-range test. These figures are not contradictory: one is an EPA estimate and the other is the result of a particular highway test. Neither guarantees the distance an individual driver will get. Highway speed, weather, terrain, vehicle load, driving style, and configuration can all affect usable range. For longer journeys, plan charging stops around conditions and available chargers rather than treating either number as a promise.
2. Maximum cargo room comes at the cost of passenger seats
The advertised 145.5-cubic-foot maximum requires folding the second row and removing the third row. That makes cargo capacity a configuration trade-off: a van set up to carry a full complement of passengers cannot also provide its maximum cargo volume. Volkswagen’s cited figure does not establish how much cargo room remains behind an occupied third row, so shoppers who regularly carry both passengers and luggage should inspect the exact seating layout and try their typical load before deciding.

Who is the 2025 ID. Buzz best suited to?
It is most compelling for buyers who value distinctive styling, need a flexible passenger van, can charge conveniently, and are comfortable planning around EV range on longer drives. It is less straightforward for drivers who frequently travel long distances without reliable charging stops or who need maximum cargo room while every seat is occupied. The practical choice depends on the seating configuration and charging routine you will actually use—not just the van’s headline maximums.
