Its trade-offs are just as clear: five seats, a high cargo floor and a base cabin that feels plain for the name. Here are five strengths and five shortcomings that matter to shoppers.
What the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser got right
1. Serious off-road hardware is standard
Toyota lists full-time four-wheel drive and both center and rear locking differentials across the 2024 lineup. Low range and trail aids such as Multi-Terrain Select and CRAWL Control add useful tools for loose or uneven terrain, although specific equipment and features can vary by grade. This is a stronger foundation than a styling package alone: the essentials for slow, controlled off-road driving are built into the vehicle. Toyota’s 2024 specifications describe the equipment.
2. The hybrid delivers substantial torque, with a better EPA estimate than earlier Land Cruisers
The 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated by Toyota at 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Toyota gives it an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined and says that figure is higher than for any previous Land Cruiser iteration. The estimate is not a promise of real-world mileage; driving conditions, terrain and load affect fuel use. Toyota also rates the vehicle to tow up to 6,000 pounds. Toyota’s specifications provide these manufacturer figures.
3. It has a more manageable size and a lower announced starting price
The redesigned 250-series Land Cruiser is a midsize, two-row SUV rather than the larger three-row vehicle some shoppers may associate with the name. That makes it a more natural rival to off-road-focused midsize models such as the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler than to a full-size family SUV. Toyota announced a $55,950 starting MSRP in February 2024; that is a historical launch figure, not a current price quote. Toyota’s announcement gives the launch MSRP, while Car and Driver’s review places it among midsize off-road competitors.

4. The heritage styling corresponds to real trim differences
The 1958 grade has round LED headlamps and the heritage-style “TOYOTA” grille. The Land Cruiser grade instead gets rectangular LED headlamps, while the limited-production First Edition combines round lamps with additional equipment. The look is therefore tied to distinguishable versions, not just a badge or a cosmetic package. Toyota’s grade and equipment details explain the differences.
5. It pairs trail equipment with everyday technology
Toyota lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports and driver-assistance features alongside the off-road hardware. Heated and ventilated seats are available on higher grades. Car and Driver describes the ride as smooth and quieter than some hardcore off-road rivals, giving the Land Cruiser a useful daily-driving dimension as well as trail capability. What we wish the 2024 Land Cruiser had
1. A third row
The U.S. 2024 Land Cruiser seats five in two rows, with no optional third row in the reviewed lineup. Families needing six or seven seats should look elsewhere in Toyota’s range rather than assume the Land Cruiser name guarantees three-row space. Car and Driver’s review confirms the two-row configuration.
2. A lower, flatter cargo area
Edmunds notes that the hybrid battery raises the cargo floor, making loading awkward, and that folding the rear seats does not create a flat surface. Those details matter when carrying bulky luggage or trying to use the cargo area for long items. Edmunds’ review discusses the floor and seat-folding limitations.

3. More room for passengers and gear
The smaller redesign brings a more compact footprint, but Edmunds flags limited rear-passenger and cargo room compared with what some buyers might expect from a Land Cruiser. If your priority is a roomy family hauler, the two-row layout and available space deserve an in-person check before buying. Car and Driver and Edmunds discuss the vehicle’s size and practicality.
4. A richer base interior
The 1958 grade’s equipment includes fabric seats, manual front-seat adjustment, a 7-inch driver display and an 8-inch multimedia screen. Car and Driver characterizes that cabin as basic. Moving up the range brings upgrades: the Land Cruiser grade has power heated and ventilated SofTex seats and a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, while the Premium Package adds leather-trimmed seats and a 14-speaker JBL system, among other features. Toyota’s grade information lists the equipment, and Car and Driver offers its assessment of the base cabin.

5. A more refined soundtrack and stronger-feeling acceleration
The powertrain’s rated torque does not guarantee effortless acceleration in every situation. In Car and Driver’s 2024 First Edition test, the Land Cruiser reached 60 mph in 7.7 seconds; the publication also describes the hybrid motor’s boost as inconsistent. Edmunds likewise calls acceleration lackluster and says premium fuel is required. These are review impressions and test-specific findings, not a guarantee that every driver will experience the vehicle identically. Car and Driver’s First Edition test and Edmunds’ review provide the reported assessments.

Who the 2024 Land Cruiser suits
The Land Cruiser makes the most sense for someone who wants a midsize SUV with standard locking differentials and low-range capability, but also wants modern connectivity and a road-going ride. It is less compelling if your must-haves are a third row, a flat and low cargo floor, generous rear-seat space or a plush base cabin. Compare it with off-road-focused midsize alternatives on trail equipment, ride refinement, fuel use, passenger and cargo practicality, and launch-price positioning—not simply on the Land Cruiser badge. Toyota’s specifications establish what it announced for the vehicle; they do not establish long-term reliability or owner satisfaction.
