The best 5-seater SUV depends on what you need it to do. For a well-rounded gasoline or hybrid compact SUV, the 2026 Honda CR-V is one of the strongest all-purpose choices. The 2026 Subaru Forester stands out for standard all-wheel drive and ground clearance, while the 2026 Toyota RAV4 is now exclusively hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offer generous cargo and rear-seat space, the Nissan Rogue emphasizes cargo organization, and the redesigned Volkswagen Tiguan provides a clearly defined two-row layout.
This guide covers U.S.-market 2026 five-seat SUVs, including gasoline, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and electric models. It compares the numbers that matter most: usable cargo space with the rear seats up, maximum cargo volume, seating, AWD availability, towing, and starting price.
What counts as a 5-seater SUV?
For this comparison, a 5-seater SUV has two rows: two front seats and a three-passenger second row. That is different from a three-row SUV that may offer a five-seat configuration in some circumstances but is designed around additional seating.
A manufacturer-stated capacity of five does not guarantee that three adults will be comfortable across the second row. Rear-seat width, child seats, center-seat shape, legroom, and the amount of luggage you carry all affect whether a vehicle works as a practical family SUV. Always test the exact vehicle with your child seats, passengers, and typical cargo.

The 2026 Honda CR-V specifications list seating for five across the lineup. Nissan also lists five seats for the 2026 Rogue, and Volkswagen describes the North American 2026 Tiguan as exclusively two-row.
2026 five-seater SUV comparison
The following figures are manufacturer-published U.S. specifications. Cargo volume, towing, AWD availability, and pricing can vary by trim and powertrain. Starting MSRPs generally exclude destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, accessories, and optional equipment.

These cargo measurements should not be treated as a perfectly standardized ranking. Automakers can use different published measurement methods and may quote different trims. Rear-seat-up volume is generally the most useful figure for a family road trip because it represents the space available while five people are seated.
Best all-around choice: 2026 Honda CR-V
The 2026 Honda CR-V is a particularly balanced five-seat SUV for shoppers who want a roomy compact crossover without committing exclusively to electric driving. It is available with either a turbocharged gasoline engine or a two-motor hybrid powertrain, and AWD is available.
Honda lists 39.3 cubic feet behind the second row and up to 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded on applicable trims. The listed starting prices are $30,920 for the LX and $35,630 for the Sport Hybrid. Gasoline configurations can tow up to 1,500 pounds, although hybrid ratings are lower and must be checked by trim.
The CR-V makes the most sense for buyers who prioritize:
- A conventional gasoline option as well as a hybrid;
- A large, useful cargo area;
- Five-passenger practicality without a third row; and
- Available AWD rather than standard AWD.
Do not assume every CR-V has the same cargo or towing specification. Confirm the exact trim, drivetrain, and factory equipment before comparing it with another SUV.
Best for standard AWD and clearance: 2026 Subaru Forester
The 2026 Subaru Forester comes with standard Symmetrical AWD, making it a straightforward choice for shoppers who want all-wheel drive without moving through a long list of drivetrain options. Subaru lists up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance, up to 74.4 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded, and up to 110.8 cubic feet of passenger volume on the gasoline model.

The gasoline Forester starts at $29,995. Hybrid trims are also available, with the Premium Hybrid listed at $34,730. Towing reaches 1,500 pounds on specified trims.
The Forester is a strong fit for buyers who value standard AWD, cargo accessibility, passenger space, and ground clearance. Standard AWD is not the same thing as guaranteed off-road capability, however. Tire choice, approach and departure angles, traction, weather, driver skill, and vehicle limits still matter.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2026 Forester as a Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings shown for the listed crashworthiness and crash-avoidance evaluations. That award applies to the tested 2026 model and should not automatically be extended to every SUV or every model year.
Best for electrified powertrain choice: 2026 Toyota RAV4
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is an important change from earlier model years: Toyota discontinued the gas-only version. The new RAV4 lineup is exclusively electrified, with hybrid and plug-in-hybrid grades.

Hybrid grades offer FWD or AWD depending on the version. Properly equipped AWD grades can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is considerably more than the 1,500-pound ratings common among several compact five-seat SUVs.
The plug-in-hybrid Woodland grade has a manufacturer-estimated electric range of up to 49 miles. That figure is not the same as an EPA gasoline-mpg rating and should be considered alongside charging access, driving distance, and how often you can recharge.
Choose the RAV4 if you want a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, available AWD, or a relatively high towing rating. Verify the exact 2026 grade because towing, drivetrain, equipment, and pricing differ across the lineup.
Best alternatives for space and value
2026 Hyundai Tucson
The 2026 Hyundai Tucson offers gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in-hybrid configurations. On the gasoline SE, Hyundai lists 38.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 74.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The gasoline model starts at $29,450.

Keep that number separate from the gasoline Tucson’s figures and from the plug-in hybrid’s electric-driving capability. A hybrid’s cargo space, towing limit, curb weight, and fuel economy can differ from the equivalent gas model.
2026 Kia Sportage
The 2026 Kia Sportage has one of the largest published cargo areas in this group. Kia lists 39.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 74.1 cubic feet folded for the gasoline model. The hybrid is listed at 39.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 73.7 cubic feet folded.
The Sportage starts at $28,790 before destination. Kia’s class-leading or space-related language should be treated as a manufacturer claim rather than independent testing, but the published figures make the Sportage worth considering for families carrying strollers, groceries, sports equipment, or luggage.
2026 Nissan Rogue
The 2026 Rogue and separately identified 2026.5 Rogue are five-seat compact SUVs. Nissan lists 105.4 cubic feet of passenger volume without a moonroof and 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats on relevant trims.

The Rogue’s practical feature is not only its volume but its organization. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat and the Divide-N-Hide cargo system can help separate smaller items from larger luggage. Because Nissan distinguishes the 2026 and 2026.5 versions, do not combine availability, equipment, or pricing without checking the exact vehicle being advertised.
2026 Volkswagen Tiguan
The North American 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan is exclusively two-row, so it is a clear choice for shoppers who do not want a third-row configuration. Volkswagen lists 103.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, 33.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Do not use specifications from older three-row Tiguans when evaluating the 2026 U.S. model. Current trim, powertrain, AWD, towing, pricing, and inventory should be confirmed through Volkswagen’s current information.
2026 Mazda CX-5
The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a five-seat compact crossover. Mazda says it has a larger rear seat and cargo area than its predecessor, and announced pricing from $29,990 for the CX-5 2.5 S, with higher trims announced through $38,990 before destination and options.

Electric five-seat SUVs to consider
EVs belong in a five-seat SUV comparison, but they should not be judged with the same single efficiency metric used for gasoline SUVs. Range, charging access, charging time, electricity cost, cold-weather performance, and road-trip infrastructure matter more than a gasoline mpg comparison.
| EV | Seats | Cargo behind rear seats | Maximum cargo | Published range detail |

| 2026 Honda Prologue | 5 | Verify current rear-seat-up figure | Up to 57.7 cu. ft. | Verify range and charging specifications by trim |
The 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 lists 30.3 cubic feet of trunk space with the second row up and 64.2 cubic feet folded. Hyundai lists 26.3 and 58.5 cubic feet for the 2026 IONIQ 5, with up to a 318-mile EPA-estimated range for specified rear-wheel-drive trims. Honda’s 2026 Prologue offers up to 57.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume.
Before choosing an electric SUV, answer four practical questions:
- Where will you charge at home? A dedicated home charger is more convenient than relying entirely on public stations, but installation depends on your electrical service, parking arrangement, and local rules.
- Where will you charge on longer trips? Check the actual route, station availability, payment requirements, and expected charging time.
- How much cargo do you carry? Several EVs have less published cargo volume than the largest gasoline and hybrid compact SUVs, even though their cabins may feel spacious.
- How does the trim affect range? Wheel size, drivetrain, battery, and equipment can change the EPA-estimated range.
How to choose the right five-seater SUV
1. Start with five-people-and-luggage cargo space
Look first at cargo volume with the second row upright. The folded-seat maximum answers a different question: how much can you carry after sacrificing rear seating?
For example, a vehicle with 39 cubic feet behind the rear seats may be more useful for a family of five than one with 70 cubic feet folded if the family routinely travels with all seats occupied. Measure your actual stroller, cooler, dog crate, musical instrument, or sports equipment rather than relying only on the headline number.

2. Treat cargo figures as directional, not perfectly interchangeable
Use the same measurement standard whenever possible. Manufacturers may publish SAE measurements or other internal figures, and a quoted number may apply only to a particular trim or powertrain. A difference of a few tenths of a cubic foot is not necessarily meaningful in daily use.
3. Separate gasoline, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and EV comparisons
Do not compare a gas SUV’s mpg directly with an EV’s range or a plug-in hybrid’s electric range. These powertrains have different refueling or charging routines and can differ in cargo space, towing, curb weight, and AWD configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Check whether AWD is standard or optional
The Forester has standard Symmetrical AWD. The CR-V, RAV4, Tucson, Sportage, Rogue, Tiguan, and CX-5 require trim- or powertrain-specific checking. AWD can improve traction in some conditions, but it does not automatically make an SUV an off-road vehicle or eliminate the need for appropriate tires.
5. Verify towing as a complete setup
A maximum towing number may require a particular drivetrain, trim, factory hitch, cooling equipment, or other package. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 information differentiates towing by drivetrain and grade; its 3,500-pound maximum applies to properly equipped AWD grades, not every RAV4.
Also account for tongue weight, passengers, luggage, trailer brakes, and the vehicle’s combined weight limits. If towing is important, ask the dealer for the rating of the exact VIN or configuration rather than relying on a model-wide advertisement.
6. Use current, vehicle-specific safety data
Safety ratings are tied to a model year, body style, and specific tests. The NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings program describes its ratings as a buying aid and cautions that comparisons should account for vehicle class and weight. IIHS results are likewise test- and model-year-specific. Look up the exact model year and review both crashworthiness and crash-avoidance results.
7. Compare the price you will actually pay
Starting MSRP is only the beginning. Add destination, taxes, registration, dealer charges, required packages, accessories, financing costs, insurance, fuel or electricity, and maintenance. A lower advertised price may not remain lower after adding AWD, a hybrid powertrain, a hitch, or the safety and convenience features you require.

Five-seat SUVs commonly carry pets, muddy gear, groceries, luggage, bikes, and outdoor equipment. Accessories can make the vehicle more usable, but fitment matters more than a generic product description.
Protect the rear cargo area
A SUV cargo liner is a sensible starting point for protecting the carpet from groceries, pet hair, wet equipment, and dirt. Choose between a universal cover, which is easier to buy but may leave gaps, and a vehicle-specific liner designed around the exact cargo floor.
For precise protection, look for a custom-fit cargo liner matched to the make, model, year, trim, subwoofer location, cargo-floor position, and rear-seat configuration. Husky Liners says its WeatherBeater cargo liners are laser-measured for specific vehicle make, model, and year, but you should still confirm the listing’s fitment before ordering.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume a liner advertised for a “five-seater SUV” fits every SUV with five seats. A 2026 CR-V, Forester, RAV4, and Tiguan can have different floor shapes, seat-folding mechanisms, tie-down locations, and underfloor storage.

Use All-weather floor mats when the cabin sees dirt or snow
All-weather floor mats are useful for families, pet owners, winter driving, and outdoor activities. Floor-mat shapes are vehicle-specific, so verify the front and rear row, model year, trim, floor anchors, and whether the vehicle has a different passenger-side or center-console configuration.
Add roof storage only after checking limits
SUV roof crossbars and roof cargo boxes can add capacity for camping equipment, skis, strollers, or bulky luggage when the rear cargo area is full. They are not universally interchangeable. Check whether the SUV has raised rails, flush rails, fixed mounting points, or no factory roof rails; then verify the crossbar fit, roof-load limit, box clearance, and total loaded weight.
Roof storage also changes vehicle height and can affect handling, wind noise, energy use, and garage or parking clearance. Follow the vehicle and accessory manufacturer’s load limits rather than treating the roof box’s maximum capacity as the vehicle’s permitted load.

Which five-seater SUV is best for your use?
| Your priority | Models to investigate first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall balance | Honda CR-V | Gasoline and hybrid choices, available AWD, and up to 39.3 cu. ft. behind the rear seats |
| Standard AWD | Subaru Forester | Symmetrical AWD is standard across the lineup |
| Hybrid or plug-in-hybrid focus | Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson | Both offer electrified choices; the RAV4 is no longer offered as gas-only |
| Maximum compact-SUV towing | Toyota RAV4 | Up to 3,500 lb on properly equipped AWD grades |
| Large published cargo area | Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson | Each lists roughly 38.7 to 39.6 cu. ft. behind the rear seats, depending on trim and powertrain |
| Cargo organization | Nissan Rogue | Divide-N-Hide and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat |
| Clearly two-row European alternative | Volkswagen Tiguan | The North American 2026 model is exclusively two-row |
| Electric driving | Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Honda Prologue | Each is a five-seat EV, with range and charging varying by trim |
Bottom line
For most shoppers, begin with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage. They cover the main compact-SUV needs: practical two-row seating, useful cargo space, available or standard AWD, and a choice of gasoline or electrified powertrains. Add the Nissan Rogue if cargo organization matters, the Volkswagen Tiguan if you want a clearly two-row European option, and the Mazda CX-5 if its interior and trim approach appeal to you.
Choose by exact configuration, not by model name alone. Confirm rear-seat-up cargo space, powertrain, AWD, towing equipment, safety data, destination charges, and current inventory. If you add a cargo liner, floor mats, roof bars, or a roof box, match the accessory to the SUV’s precise model year, trim, seat layout, and cargo-floor configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best five-seater SUV for most buyers?
The 2026 Honda CR-V is a strong all-around choice because it offers gasoline and hybrid powertrains, available AWD, five-passenger seating, and 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. The best choice changes if standard AWD, towing, electric driving, or a lower starting price is more important.
Which five-seat SUV has the most towing capacity?
Among the models covered here, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 has the highest published maximum: up to 3,500 pounds on properly equipped AWD grades. That rating does not apply to every RAV4, so verify the exact grade, drivetrain, hitch, and equipment.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is the 2026 Toyota RAV4 available with a gas-only engine?
No. Toyota discontinued the gas-only RAV4 for 2026. The U.S. lineup is exclusively electrified, with hybrid and plug-in-hybrid grades.
Are all five-seater SUVs the same size inside?
No. A five-seat rating only describes the number of designated seats. Rear-seat width, legroom, cargo shape, child-seat compatibility, and usable space vary substantially. Test the vehicle with the passengers and equipment you actually carry.
Should I buy a universal or custom-fit SUV cargo liner?
A universal liner is easier to use across vehicles but may leave uncovered areas or interfere with seat mechanisms. A custom-fit liner is usually more precise, but it must match the exact make, model year, trim, subwoofer location, cargo-floor position, and seat configuration.
The Bottom Line
Choose the SUV by configuration, not headline badge. The CR-V is a balanced all-rounder, the Forester makes standard AWD simple, the RAV4 leads this group for properly equipped towing and electrification, and the Sportage and Tucson offer strong published cargo figures. EVs deserve a separate range-and-charging comparison rather than a direct mpg ranking.
