The Cardo PACKTALK PRO is the best premium all-rounder, the Sena 60S is the right choice for established Sena groups, and the Cardo PACKTALK EDGE offers the strongest premium value. Riders wanting lower-cost Cardo mesh should choose the PACKTALK NEO; a discounted Sena 50S still makes sense for existing Sena users. What a motorcycle Bluetooth headset does
A modern helmet communicator is an external control module connected to two helmet speakers and a microphone. It can stream music and podcasts, read GPS directions, handle phone calls, accept voice commands, and provide rider-to-passenger or rider-to-rider intercom.
- Full-face helmets: normally use a wired microphone.
- Modular and open-face helmets: generally need a boom microphone.
- Mounting: adhesive plates or clamp bases attach outside the shell; the speakers and microphone install inside.
- Phone functions: music, calls, navigation and some safety features require a paired phone.
Bluetooth versus mesh intercom
Conventional Bluetooth
Bluetooth intercom is usually sufficient for solo riding, a passenger or a small, fixed group. It is often cheaper, but connections can be more vulnerable when riders separate or the group configuration changes.

Mesh networking
Mesh systems are designed for larger, moving groups. Cardo calls its system Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC); Sena uses Mesh Intercom. Riders can leave and rejoin more flexibly than with a simple Bluetooth chain, but capacity, range and network behavior vary by model.
Cardo DMC and Sena Mesh are not native, directly interchangeable networks. Cross-brand groups generally need a Bluetooth bridge, which does not provide the same mesh range, capacity or resilience. See this Cardo-versus-Sena compatibility guide.
Choose your group before choosing a headset
- Ask what brand your regular riding partners use.
- Decide whether you need solo phone audio, two-up communication or a large-group network.
- Choose native Cardo DMC or Sena Mesh when your group already uses that platform.
- Use Bluetooth bridging only when communication with another ecosystem is unavoidable.
A technically impressive communicator can be the wrong purchase if nobody in your regular group shares its native network.
The five best choices
1. Cardo PACKTALK PRO: best premium all-rounder
The $499.95 PACKTALK PRO adds 45 mm JBL speakers, second-generation DMC for up to 31 stated group members, a magnetic Air Mount, Auto On/Off and IP67 protection. It is the strongest fit for touring riders who want Cardo’s fullest feature set and are willing to pay for it.

Its crash detection uses the headset, Cardo Connect app and Cardo cloud. A functioning phone, permissions, cellular/data coverage and regional support are required; Cardo limits availability to selected regions and describes the feature as intended for on-road/tarmac use. No crash-detection system is foolproof, so treat it as an additional layer rather than emergency-service replacement. Details are at Cardo’s PACKTALK PRO page.
2. Sena 60S: best for Sena groups
The 60S is Sena’s current flagship. It supports Mesh Intercom 3.0 and 2.0, Group Mesh for up to 24 participants, Open Mesh on six channels, Bluetooth intercom and Wave Intercom. Sena specifies second-generation 40 mm Harman Kardon speakers, AI-based ambient-noise suppression and echo cancellation, IPX7 water resistance, 17 hours of mesh talk time or 24 hours over Bluetooth. Its stated range is up to 1.2 miles in open terrain.
Those figures are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of highway performance. The 60S is most compelling when your regular riders already use Sena Mesh. See Sena’s 60S specifications.
3. Cardo PACKTALK EDGE: best premium value
At $439.95, the EDGE retains second-generation DMC, a 40 mm JBL speaker system, IP67 protection, Air Mount and a 13-hour rated battery. Cardo’s comparison gives it the same stated mesh capacity and range as the PRO. It costs $60 less than the PRO but omits crash detection, 45 mm speakers and Auto On/Off, making it the practical premium pick for most Cardo riders who do not need those extras.

4. Cardo PACKTALK NEO: best lower-cost mesh option
The $359.95 NEO brings second-generation DMC for up to 15 stated riders, 40 mm JBL speakers, natural voice control, OTA updates, Bluetooth intercom, IP67 protection and a stated one-mile unit-to-unit range. Cardo says 20 minutes of charging provides two hours of talk time.
Its conventional clickable mount is less convenient than the EDGE and PRO magnetic Air Mount when moving one communicator between helmets. It also has a two-year warranty rather than three years. Product details are on Cardo’s PACKTALK NEO page.
5. Sena 50S: best discounted or established-Sena alternative
The 50S remains useful when heavily discounted or when your group already owns older Sena Mesh units. RevZilla lists Mesh and Bluetooth communication, advanced noise control, up to 14 hours of talk time and Group Mesh for up to 24 riders. It is not Sena’s newest platform, so a new buyer should compare its actual sale price with the 60S’s newer hardware and longer stated runtimes.

Helmet fit and installation
Check the speaker recesses
Advertised diameter is not enough. Measure the helmet’s speaker pockets and test placement before fixing pads permanently. Thick speakers can create pressure points and hearing fatigue; booster pads should be used only when they improve alignment.
Place the microphone correctly
Put the microphone close to your mouth but behind the helmet’s wind protection where possible. A microphone in turbulent airflow can make callers hear roar, cause failed voice commands and force you to shout.
Mount it carefully
- Confirm the helmet model and the correct boom or wired microphone.
- Test speaker and microphone positions with the liner installed.
- Clean and dry the shell before applying an adhesive base, then allow adequate curing time.
- Pair the phone, install the manufacturer’s app and apply firmware updates.
- Pair with the actual riding group and test voice commands.
- Take a short ride before relying on the system for a long trip.
Magnetic systems still require a permanent base or plate on each helmet. Helmet-specific systems can look cleaner but are less transferable. For compatible Shoei helmets, the Sena SRL-Mesh is designed for models including the Neotec II/3, GT-Air II/3 and J-Cruise II; see the compatibility listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio quality at speed
Larger speakers do not automatically sound better. Helmet sealing, speaker alignment, wind turbulence, motorcycle exhaust, earplugs, volume control and microphone processing can matter more than diameter. The PRO uses 45 mm JBL speakers; the EDGE and NEO use 40 mm JBL speakers; the 60S uses second-generation 40 mm Harman Kardon speakers. These are hardware specifications, not independent sound-quality test results.

Expect speech intelligibility to vary with helmet shape and airflow. Reposition speakers before assuming a defective unit, and use properly fitted riding earplugs while keeping important alerts audible.
Battery, range and weather ratings in context
Battery
Talk-time figures are laboratory or manufacturer-rated claims. Volume, music playback, phone calls, GPS prompts, temperature, weather and mesh operation can reduce mixed-use runtime. Cardo rates the PRO and EDGE at 13 hours; Sena rates the 60S at 17 hours in mesh and 24 hours over Bluetooth.
Range
Terrain, trees, buildings, curves, elevation, intervening vehicles, rider spacing and network topology all affect range. Cardo’s one-mile figures are unit-to-unit; its larger five-mile DMC figure depends on riders relaying the signal. Sena’s 1.2-mile 60S figure is for open terrain.
IP ratings
IP67 combines dust protection with resistance to temporary immersion under the applicable test. IPX7 states water-ingress protection but does not claim a dust rating. Neither rating authorizes pressure-washing, intentional submersion or use with an open charging port.

- Cardo Freecom 4X: a Bluetooth communicator for up to four riders, suitable when full mesh is unnecessary. See Cardo’s Freecom 4X page.
- Cardo Spirit or Spirit HD: consider for basic solo, passenger or two-rider communication on a tighter budget.
- Sena SRL-Mesh: choose for supported Shoei helmets when integrated installation matters more than universal compatibility.
- Helmet-integrated smart systems: cleaner installation, but less flexible if you change helmets or replace the communicator separately.
Setup and troubleshooting checklist
- Update firmware before a trip and confirm app permissions.
- Pair the phone before departure and test music, GPS, calls and voice control.
- Give a passenger their own communicator; one unit cannot provide a true two-person intercom.
- If callers hear wind, move the microphone closer and behind the wind barrier, check the microphone type and replace missing foam.
- If speakers hurt after an hour, adjust recess depth and alignment rather than simply increasing volume.
- If using PACKTALK PRO crash detection, configure emergency contacts, verify regional support and confirm phone battery and cellular coverage.
Verdict
Buy the PACKTALK PRO for the most complete Cardo feature set and integrated crash detection. Choose the Sena 60S when your group rides Sena Mesh. Choose the PACKTALK EDGE for premium Cardo performance without the PRO’s extras, the PACKTALK NEO for a lower-cost Cardo mesh entry, and the Sena 50S only when its discount or existing Sena compatibility outweighs its age. If you mainly need music, GPS and occasional two-up communication, a Bluetooth-only model such as the Freecom 4X can be the more sensible purchase.
