Buy only what your truck lacks: many off-road trims already include some or all of these features, so check the build sheet before spending money.
1. All-terrain or rugged-terrain tires
Tires are the Tacoma’s contact with the ground, so they are often the most useful first upgrade for traction on dirt, gravel and rock. Choose a tire for the terrain you actually drive, and don’t assume that a more aggressive tread is automatically better for every trip; on-road noise, wet-weather behavior and load rating matter too.
Toyota equips the 2025 TRD Off Road with BFGoodrich Trail Terrain tires, while the 2025 TRD Pro and Trailhunter use 33-inch Goodyear Territory RT tires, according to Toyota Canada’s 2024 Tacoma information. If your Tacoma already has suitable factory tires, upgrading may not be the best use of your budget.
Before fitting a larger tire, verify clearance through the full range of steering and suspension travel. Wheel offset, fender clearance, gearing, speedometer effects and tire load rating all need to suit the exact trim and setup. A tire that fits while parked may still rub when the suspension compresses or the wheels turn.

2. Suspension matched to tire size and use
A lift can create room for tires and improve clearance, but height alone does not make a truck more capable. Select shocks or a suspension system for the tire size, payload and terrain you intend to run. Toyota’s accessory catalog lists a TRD 2.5-inch Suspension Lift Kit, and its Tacoma lineup includes Bilstein, FOX and Old Man Emu suspension equipment.
Fitment depends on the specific Tacoma configuration. Treat the Toyota accessory listing and the owner’s manual as the references for compatibility, then have a qualified shop assess alignment, brake-line clearance, driveline angles and electronic-system compatibility. Suspension work can affect ride and handling as well as clearance; don’t choose a setup on lift height alone.
3. Skid plates for exposed underbody parts
Skid plates help shield vulnerable components from rocks and ledges. Toyota describes the 2025 TRD Off Road as having “underbody protection for the engine, fuel tank and transfer case,” and lists front, transmission and rear-differential skid plates as Tacoma accessories.

If you are adding protection in stages, a practical order is front plate, transmission and transfer-case area, then the differential and any exposed fuel-tank area. Check which components the truck’s factory plates already cover before ordering; coverage differs by trim, and a plate does not make the vehicle immune to impact damage.

4. Rock rails or rocker protection
Rock rails protect the rocker panels and door sills when the truck contacts an obstacle or slides across rocks. Toyota lists rock rails and rocker protectors as Tacoma accessories; the Trailhunter includes rock rails as standard equipment.
Check how any step or running board interacts with the rails. An accessory that hangs lower or mounts differently may reduce clearance or fail to provide the protection you expect. Confirm fitment and mounting for your trim rather than assuming that all side steps and rails are interchangeable.

5. Rated recovery gear and attachment points
Carry recovery equipment that is rated for the vehicle and the recovery method: a recovery strap or kinetic rope, soft shackles, gloves and a compatible hitch-mounted or frame-rated recovery point. Toyota lists ARB rear tow hooks and Factor 55 Off Road Hitchlink products in its accessory material. These listings do not establish that every item fits every Tacoma, so check the exact part and vehicle compatibility.
Use only rated recovery points and follow the limits in the accessory instructions and owner’s manual. Keep bystanders clear of the recovery area, and secure any load. Toyota cautions: “Off-roading is inherently dangerous and may result in vehicle damage. Do not overload vehicle and properly secure roof load. See Owner’s Manual for weight limits and restrictions.”

Equipment varies by model and trim. Toyota’s 2025 descriptions indicate that the TRD Off Road includes BFGoodrich Trail Terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential and underbody protection. The TRD Pro adds FOX shocks, 33-inch Goodyear Territory RT tires, recovery hooks and aluminum skid protection. Trailhunter has 33-inch tires, Old Man Emu shocks, hot-stamped skid plates, rock rails, recovery hooks, a roof rack and onboard air. Verify the equipment on your truck’s build sheet before buying duplicates.
How to choose upgrades without compromising the truck
Compare options by what they change, not just by their advertised size or appearance. A larger tire can affect clearance and gearing; suspension and protective hardware add installation complexity and may affect ride, handling or payload. Recovery equipment is only useful when its rating and attachment point match the vehicle and recovery plan.
