5 Japanese Car Brands Ranked From Best to Worst (2026)

Using Consumer Reports’ 2026 Automotive Brand Report Card as the basis, the five brands rank Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, then Mazda. Consumer Reports published its report card on December 4, 2025, and combines road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety into an overall score. It is a U.S.-oriented brand comparison—not a universal verdict on every model or market.

How the ranking works

Consumer Reports (CR) scores brands using road-test results, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. Its road tests include more than 50 tests; reliability predictions draw on member surveys covering problems in 20 potential trouble areas; and owner-satisfaction predictions reflect whether surveyed members would buy the same vehicle again. Safety considers available crash-test results and whether crash-prevention technology is standard or optional. A manufacturer is included only if CR has tested at least two current models.

The order below follows CR’s 2026 overall brand ranks, not a separate calculation for Japanese automakers. Scores are report-card points, not percentages. Because the score is a brand-level average, it cannot tell you whether a particular model or model year is a good choice.

Rank among these five Brand CR overall rank CR score
1 Subaru 1st 82
2 Honda 4th 76
3 Toyota 5th 75
4 Nissan 13th 70
5 Mazda 14th 69

1. Subaru: highest overall in this scorecard

Subaru leads the five brands and ranks first overall, with 82 points. The company identifies its Global Platform, horizontally opposed Boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and EyeSight driver-assist technology as core technologies. CR’s Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing, said of Subaru models: “They share proven parts that help assure consistently great reliability. They also use cutting-edge safety systems and perform well in our emergency handling and braking tests.”

Subaru reports that 98% of its vehicles sold were AWD, based on calendar-year sales from 2018 through 2022 and excluding OEM vehicles from other companies. That is historical context, not a current sales share. Subaru’s AWD information describes the system and the period behind the figure.

2. Honda: second among the five, fourth overall

Honda earns 76 points and ranks fourth among all brands in CR’s report card. That places it one point ahead of Toyota in this scorecard, but the narrow difference is not proof of a meaningful or universal quality gap. Brand averages do not establish that every Honda is more reliable or safer than every Toyota; compare the models and model years you are actually considering.

3. Toyota: close behind Honda

Toyota scores 75 points and ranks fifth overall, immediately behind Honda in CR’s ranking. The one-point separation is a small scorecard difference, not a basis for assuming the same ordering will hold for every vehicle, buyer, or measure of quality.

4. Nissan: fourth among the five

Nissan receives 70 points and ranks 13th overall. The brand result alone does not identify a single model-level cause, so use it as a prompt to compare the specific Nissan on your shortlist with direct rivals—not as a substitute for that comparison.

5. Mazda: fifth here, but not weak on every measure

Mazda scores 69 points and ranks 14th overall in CR’s report card. That is the lowest position among these five on this particular scorecard, but it should not be read as a judgment that every Mazda is inferior. The brand’s lineup includes the CX-5, CX-30, Mazda3, and MX-5; Mazda notes that vehicle specifications vary by market. Its FY March 2025 global sales included 346,050 CX-5s, 230,434 CX-30s, 166,647 Mazda3s, and 27,959 MX-5s—sales figures that describe the company’s model mix, not quality ratings.

Why another ranking may differ

J.D. Power’s 2025 Japan APEAL study offers a useful contrast, but it measures a different thing in a different market. It surveyed 20,101 owners of new vehicles in their first two to 13 months of ownership and measured owner appeal in Japan. Among mass-market brands, Subaru scored 687, Toyota 681, and Mazda 679. Those scores cannot be directly compared with CR’s points, and the reported excerpt does not provide equivalent Honda and Nissan scores, so it does not support a combined five-brand ranking. J.D. Power’s 2025 Japan APEAL study shows how the ordering can look different when the geography and measure change.

How to use this ranking when shopping

Use the brand order to narrow a broad search, then evaluate the exact vehicle. CR advises readers to inspect a car’s own overall score and predicted reliability: a strong brand average does not guarantee a strong individual model.

  1. Choose the market and model year. These results are a U.S.-oriented new-car comparison. Equipment, powertrains, and specifications can vary by country and model year.
  2. Compare direct rivals. Look at the exact vehicles that meet your needs for price, fuel economy, powertrain, cargo space, dealer access, and driving preference. Those priorities may produce a different shortlist than the brand average.
  3. Check vehicle-level evidence. Where available, review the individual model’s road-test results, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety information rather than assuming the brand rank applies uniformly.
  4. Reassess close scores in context. Honda and Toyota are separated by one point in CR’s report card. The difference is a ranking result, not a claim that one is meaningfully better for every buyer.
