They show that some manufacturers and engineers are exploring hydrogen alongside battery-electric and fuel-cell technology, especially for applications where existing engine expertise or heavy-duty powertrains may matter.
What is a hydrogen combustion engine?
A hydrogen combustion engine burns hydrogen inside an internal-combustion engine to produce mechanical power. It is different from a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle: a fuel cell uses hydrogen to generate electricity, which then powers electric motors.
That distinction matters when a vehicle is called a “hydrogen car.” BMW and Toyota’s announced hydrogen vehicle for 2028 is a fuel-cell electric vehicle, not a hydrogen combustion car. BMW describes fuel-cell technology as another form of electric-vehicle technology that complements battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and internal-combustion engines (BMW Group, September 5, 2024).
Five hydrogen combustion programs, with their limits
These are five programs or engine applications, not five separate mass-market car engines. Toyota’s Corolla and GR Corolla are iterations of one motorsport development program; Kawasaki’s two examples serve different industrial applications.

Toyota used gaseous hydrogen in the 2021 and 2022 race seasons, then moved to liquid hydrogen from 2023 onward. | The GR Corolla H2 remains a motorsport concept and technology demonstrator. Toyota’s June 2026 announcement describes ongoing development and race verification, not a consumer production launch (Toyota, June 2026). |
| Kawasaki hydrogen-engine motorcycle | Motorcycle research program focused on hydrogen combustion. | Kawasaki Motors’ 2024 sustainability-report search excerpt described a public demonstration run and research toward a functioning model for the early 2030s. Detailed performance or a production date is not established by that excerpt (Kawasaki Motors sustainability reports). |
| Kawasaki large natural-gas engines with hydrogen co-firing | Industrial gas engines using hydrogen mixed with natural gas or city gas—not hydrogen alone. | Kawasaki says its technology supports stable operation with up to 30% hydrogen mixed with natural gas. It reports a 7.5 MW engine operation using up to 30% hydrogen and city gas; the accessible page does not give a publication date (Kawasaki Heavy Industries, hydrogen engine overview). |
| Kawasaki hydrogen-fired dual-fuel marine four-stroke engine | Marine propulsion, with hydrogen in a dual-fuel engine. | Kawasaki describes this engine as under development for marine transport. Its page does not establish commercial deployment or specify a production date (Kawasaki Heavy Industries, hydrogen engine overview). |
| Japan Engine 6UEC35LSGH | Large-vessel engine tested with at least 95% hydrogen co-firing. | NEDO reported in September 2026 that the engine completed factory testing. NEDO said installation on a ship was scheduled for January 2027, with onboard demonstration planned from April 2028; those dates were still in the future at the time of the announcement (NEDO, September 2026). |
What the reported results do—and do not—show
Toyota: liquid hydrogen changed the race-car range
Toyota’s 2024 Integrated Report says shifting its race program from gaseous to liquid hydrogen approximately doubled the development vehicle’s driving range. That is a company-reported result for Toyota’s race program, not a general comparison with battery-electric vehicles. The report also describes range with gaseous hydrogen as a challenge (Toyota 2024 Integrated Report).
Japan Engine: a factory-test result, not yet an at-sea demonstration
NEDO reported that the 6UEC35LSGH factory test used at least 95% hydrogen co-firing and achieved more than 95% lower greenhouse-gas emissions than a conventional heavy-fuel-oil engine in that test. Those figures refer to the tested engine and NEDO’s stated comparison; they are not a lifecycle-emissions result for hydrogen production, nor do they establish performance on a vessel. NEDO’s announcement scheduled ship installation for January 2027 and onboard demonstration from April 2028 (NEDO, September 2026).

Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
Are hydrogen combustion engines zero-emission?
No blanket “zero-emission” claim is justified by these examples. Toyota says hydrogen combustion produces almost no operational CO2 because the fuel does not contain carbon, but that is not a lifecycle assessment of how the hydrogen is made, transported or stored. Combustion pollutants such as nitrogen oxides also need to be considered separately from CO2. The NEDO emissions figure applies to a specific factory test and comparison, not every hydrogen engine or the full hydrogen supply chain.
Hydrogen’s climate impact depends in part on its production pathway and the energy and infrastructure required to deliver it. Toyota and BMW identify hydrogen supply and refuelling infrastructure as continuing work (Toyota 2024 Integrated Report; BMW Group, September 5, 2024).

Can a regular gasoline engine run on hydrogen?
These examples do not show that an unmodified gasoline car can simply be filled with hydrogen. Toyota describes modified race cars, Kawasaki’s industrial example burns a hydrogen-and-gas blend, and the marine projects are purpose-built or under development. They demonstrate engineering programs, not a consumer-ready conversion kit or a drop-in fuel change. The cited sources do not establish a general conversion procedure or the safety, emissions and legal requirements for converting a particular road car.
Are hydrogen engines better than EVs?
These engine demonstrations cannot answer that without a defined use case and comparable evidence on efficiency, cost, lifecycle emissions, infrastructure and performance. A race-car range improvement from switching hydrogen storage forms, for example, is not a head-to-head test against a battery-electric car. Likewise, a ship-engine factory result addresses a different task from everyday passenger-car travel.

Toyota frames hydrogen combustion as one route among several toward carbon neutrality. In May 2024, Toyota CEO Koji Sato said the company needed to evolve engines in line with the future energy environment while offering customers diverse options (Toyota, May 28, 2024). That is evidence of continued development—not proof that battery-electric vehicles are finished. The applications, fuels and maturity levels in these five programs differ too much to support that conclusion.
