Planning to buy a vehicle in the next six months? Edmunds contributor Josh Jacquot highlights five upcoming models that stand out for their powertrains, size, seating or equipment: a hybrid Nissan Rogue, an electric Toyota Highlander, Audi’s new Q9, a compact Slate electric pickup and a redesigned Chevrolet Silverado 1500. They serve very different needs, so this is a watchlist—not a direct ranking.
The figures below are estimates and future-model claims reported by Edmunds in an Associated Press-distributed article published October 7, 2026. They are not independent test results or confirmed final specifications. Check with manufacturers for current specifications and availability as your purchase date approaches.
At a glance: how the five vehicles compare
| Vehicle | Type and seating | Powertrain and reported figure | Reported starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid | Small SUV | Generator-based E-Power hybrid; Nissan-estimated 38 mpg combined city/highway | $37,065, including destination fees |
| 2028 Toyota Highlander | Three-row electric SUV | All-electric; up to 320 miles of range | Estimated $60,000; destination inclusion not stated |
| 2027 Audi Q9 | Luxury three-row SUV; seven seats or available six-seat layout | Turbocharged V6; 429 hp | $89,095, including destination |

| 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | Full-size pickup; seven variants reported | New V8 options reported at 402 hp and 481 hp; other engines expected to carry over | Estimated $40,000; top versions expected to exceed $80,000 |
All figures and configurations in this table are from the Edmunds article distributed by the Associated Press on October 7, 2026. Treat them as reported estimates or expectations, not confirmed final specifications. The Highlander price is an estimate, and the article does not say whether it includes destination.
Which one fits your needs?
- For a small SUV with a hybrid system: The Rogue Hybrid is the one to watch if you want an alternative to a conventional hybrid layout. Its reported E-Power system uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity for a battery, while electric motors drive the vehicle.
- For three-row electric-SUV shopping: The Highlander is the electric option on this list. Shoppers who want a gas or hybrid three-row Toyota SUV would instead need to consider the larger Grand Highlander, according to the article.
- For a luxury three-row SUV: The Q9 targets shoppers considering full-size luxury rivals such as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. It offers a choice between seven seats and an available six-passenger arrangement with second-row captain’s chairs.
- For a compact electric pickup at a lower reported starting price: The Slate Truck is described as smaller than the Ford Maverick, but its sparse equipment and estimated range are important trade-offs.
- For a full-size pickup with new V8 choices: The Silverado 1500 is the truck to track if you want a redesigned interior and a standard 16.3-inch touchscreen, alongside the reported engine changes.
2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid: a generator-based hybrid
Edmunds describes the fourth-generation Rogue Hybrid as using Nissan’s E-Power system. In this setup, a small gasoline engine acts as a generator: it charges a battery, and electric motors drive the wheels. That differs from a conventional arrangement in which the gasoline engine can directly power the wheels.

Edmunds presents the Q9 as Audi’s new full-size, three-row SUV. The article reports a 429-horsepower turbocharged V6 and seating for seven, with an available six-passenger configuration that replaces the second-row bench with captain’s chairs. 2027 Slate Truck: compact, electric and deliberately basic
The Slate Truck is described as a two-seat electric pickup smaller than the Ford Maverick, with an estimated range of 205 miles and a reported starting price of $26,400, including destination. The proposed design is notably sparse: it omits factory paint and an infotainment touchscreen.

The article says the cargo area may be configured as a seating area to create a five-seat, SUV-like layout. Because that is described as a possible configuration, do not assume it will be available on every version. Buyers weighing the Slate should consider its limited equipment and estimated range alongside its compact size and reported price.

How to use this watchlist before buying
Start with the job the vehicle needs to do: passenger space, pickup utility, electric driving or a particular price range. Then compare the final manufacturer specifications and availability for the exact version you would buy. Edmunds’ reported estimates are useful for identifying what to track, but they do not establish launch timing, orderability or transaction prices.
