5 EVs With the Lowest Maintenance Costs—and 5 That Might Surprise You

CarEdge’s five-year estimates put the Nissan LEAF, FIAT 500e, Toyota bZ4X, IONIQ 6, and Kona Electric lowest among the battery-electric models shown. Here’s how to interpret the figures and what EV maintenance still involves.

According to CarEdge’s displayed model estimates, the five lowest five-year maintenance costs among the battery-electric vehicles listed are the Nissan LEAF ($1,095), FIAT 500e ($1,178), Toyota bZ4X ($1,208), Hyundai IONIQ 6 ($1,360), and Hyundai Kona Electric ($1,561). These are estimates, not guaranteed owner bills, and the table does not establish a matched model year, trim, mileage profile, or regional service-cost basis for every vehicle.

Five EVs with the lowest five-year maintenance estimates

The figures below are CarEdge’s accumulated five-year maintenance estimates for the models in its displayed table, accessed in 2026. The ordering is limited to battery-electric vehicles: the table also lists the Toyota Mirai at a lower rank position, but it is a fuel-cell vehicle, not a battery-electric EV. CarEdge does not expose a common model year and trim for every row, so treat this as a comparison of published model estimates rather than an apples-to-apples test.

Battery-electric model CarEdge five-year maintenance estimate
Nissan LEAF $1,095
FIAT 500e $1,178
Toyota bZ4X $1,208
Hyundai IONIQ 6 $1,360
Hyundai Kona Electric $1,561

Source for all amounts: CarEdge’s electric-car maintenance estimates. They are modeled estimates, not quotes or a promise of what a particular owner will spend.

Five other EVs with estimates above the lowest-cost group

“Might surprise you” is an editorial hook, not a finding from a reader survey. These familiar models have higher CarEdge five-year estimates than the five above, but they are not the most expensive vehicles in the broader table. The estimates should not be read as a high-maintenance ranking.

Battery-electric model CarEdge five-year maintenance estimate
Volkswagen ID.4 $1,630
Chevrolet Equinox EV $1,673
Kia EV6 $1,705
Hyundai IONIQ 5 $1,712
Ford Mustang Mach-E $1,760

Source for all amounts: CarEdge’s electric-car maintenance estimates. These figures are higher than the lowest five listed above, but the ID.4, Equinox EV, and other examples are not evidence that all EVs have similar upkeep costs.

What EV maintenance includes

Battery-electric vehicles avoid routine engine oil changes, but they still have wear items and systems that need attention. Common needs include tire care, wiper blades, cabin-air filters, and brake-system service. Regenerative braking can reduce use of the friction brakes, but it does not eliminate the need to follow the vehicle’s service guidance.

Intervals depend on the vehicle and conditions

Tesla’s Model 3 guidance says to rotate tires every 6,250 miles (10,000 km), or when the tread-depth difference reaches 2/32 inch (1.5 mm), whichever comes first. It also lists cabin-air-filter replacement every two years, annual wiper-blade replacement, brake-fluid health checks every four years, and annual or 12,500-mile brake-caliper cleaning and lubrication in places where roads are salted in winter. Tesla notes that use, environment, and vehicle age can change what is needed; these intervals are Model 3 guidance, not a universal EV schedule. Its summary says, “Your vehicle should generally be serviced on an as-needed basis,” followed by those specific maintenance items (Tesla Model 3 service intervals).

Use the schedule for the exact vehicle

Nissan’s 2025 LEAF maintenance tool asks for the vehicle configuration, distance traveled, and driving conditions—or a VIN—to show a personalized schedule. Hyundai’s Kona Electric owner page also bases its schedule on trim, powertrain, and average monthly mileage, and identifies the first service at 7,500 miles. Consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer schedule for the exact model year and configuration you are considering rather than treating a single interval as applicable to every EV (Nissan maintenance schedules; Hyundai maintenance schedule information).

Maintenance cost is not total cost of ownership

A maintenance estimate covers a different question from a total-cost-of-ownership ranking. Vincentric’s 2025 figures, for example, put the five-year total ownership cost of the 2025 Nissan LEAF S at $40,881, the 2024 Mini Cooper Electric SE at $43,389, and the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric SE at $43,466. Those are overall ownership-cost estimates, not maintenance-only amounts, and should not be compared directly with CarEdge’s five-year maintenance figures (Vincentric 2025 Best Value in America results; Vincentric press releases).

The distinction matters when comparing vehicles: ownership-cost calculations can include expenses beyond scheduled upkeep, while a maintenance estimate addresses only its stated cost category. Neither ranking, by itself, establishes what a specific owner will pay under a different mileage pattern, service market, or model-year configuration.

How to use these estimates when shopping

  1. Compare the same cost category. Keep maintenance-only figures separate from repair-plus-maintenance totals and total ownership cost.
  2. Match the vehicle details. Check model year and trim; CarEdge’s displayed table does not establish those details consistently for every model.
  3. Account for your use. Annual mileage, driving conditions, climate, and local service prices can affect upkeep. Manufacturer tools may request some of these details.
  4. Check what is included. Confirm which service categories the estimate covers and whether it is a modeled figure or based on observed invoices.
  5. Use the maintenance schedule for the vehicle you may buy. A model-specific owner’s manual or service tool is the better guide for intervals and required work.
