What were these pedal designs trying to do?
| Design | Problem it set out to address | Reported status in the 2020 article |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic pedals | Foot retention without a conventional mechanical clip-in | Examples named; current availability not established |
| BioConform BIUS1 | Allowing the foot platform to move laterally | Developed by BioConform; current availability not established |
| Pedal Lock | Carrying a bicycle lock and motion-triggered alarm in a pedal | Never reached production |
| Squidworx modular flat pedal | Replacing worn platform surfaces without replacing the whole pedal | Product and replacement-part availability not established |
| Stokbikes folding pedal | Helping keep a parked bicycle upright | Did not reach its crowdfunding goal |
The mechanisms and historical status notes below come from Ben Coxworth’s May 29, 2020 New Atlas article. It does not report controlled tests, so these concepts cannot be ranked for objective performance.
1. Magnetic pedals: retention without a conventional clip-in
A steel plate attached to the underside of a cycling shoe engages one or more magnets in the pedal. The rider releases the foot by twisting it to one side, according to the 2020 article. It named MagLOCK, magped, and REM Pedal as examples, describing the approach as an option for mountain bikers who were uncomfortable being mechanically clicked in.
That description explains the intended mechanism, not how securely or reliably any model performs. The article does not establish comparative safety or current stock for the named systems.

2. BioConform BIUS1: a platform that moves with the foot
BioConform’s BIUS1 used two steel springs at each pedal axle, allowing the platform to move in or out in response to the rider’s foot. The company’s rationale was that accommodating foot movement might help address knee, hip, or ankle discomfort after a ride. It also claimed the design could engage more leg muscles and potentially allow more power. Those were company claims, not demonstrated health or performance outcomes in the article.
New Atlas reported a historical price of €225 per pair, approximately US$250, in 2020. The article also said BioConform’s site was unresponsive at that time; neither that observation nor the price establishes the company’s or product’s present status. It noted that Nikola Innovation offered a similar approach in a clipless road pedal.

- 1. WIDE APPLICATION: The pedals thread spindle uses international universal standard 9/16 inch, suitable for 99% bike crank, for example mountain bike, road bike, folding bike, ommuting. Each bike pedal spindle is fitted with 2 sealed bearings, they spin smoothly as well.
- 2. STURDY AND DURABLE: The pedals are made of aluminum alloy pedal body and high strength Cr-Mo spindle which has sturdy, abrasion and corrosion resistance, we have try to stood and bounced on them with all of my 190 pounds of weight. rubber ring will keep the bearing clean to a certain extent, and stay away from dust infiltrating.
- 3. GREAT GRIPS: Lightweight and wide base easy to keep your feet stay on the pedals better when climbing, provide more comfortable riding experience for you. They are very grippy even on your size 10 shoe flip-flops.
- 4. ANTI-SKID DESIGN: 6 pins on each side effectively increase friction, the pins will grip the tread on your shoe and have a very comfortable feelling, it will't cut up your leg even you can actually pedal bare foot. You can try to bike over rocky, rooty and uneven terrain, these pedals all get tested and stand up to your punishment.
- 5. EASY TO INSTALL: The pedals were labelled L & R, using hexagon installation and removal. When you're installing these pedals, be sure to put the L pedal on the left side and the R pedal on the right side, counter clockwise to tighten for left pedal and clockwise to tighten for right pedal, bike head is the tightening direction. 1PCS pedal wrench that come with can help big time.
3. Pedal Lock: a lock and alarm built into a pedal
Pedal Lock was a concept for a matched pair of water-resistant pedals of equal size and weight. One pedal was designed to house a retractable galvanized-steel cable, a combination lock, an accelerometer, and an alarm rated at 120 decibels. The cable could be pulled out to secure the bicycle, while movement could trigger the alarm.
The New Atlas article explicitly reported that Pedal Lock never reached production. It is therefore best understood as a proposed way to integrate security hardware into a pedal, not as a product available to buy.

4. Squidworx modular flat pedal: replace the worn platform cages
Squidworx’s modular design paired a sealed steel axle and central 6061-aluminum body with nylon-composite cages that formed the foot platform. The cages could be detached and replaced as they wore, addressing platform wear without requiring replacement of the entire pedal.
In 2020, New Atlas reported a price of $5 per replacement cage and CAD$160 per set, approximately US$116. These are historical figures; current product availability and replacement-part supply are not established by that article.

With hexagon installation/removal, you can fit them on any 9/16'' thread bike in just 5 minutes.
5. Stokbikes folding pedals: magnets intended to steady a parked bike
Each Stokbikes pedal could fold open to reveal two magnets on its inner surface. The magnets were intended to attach to a metal post or similar object and help keep a parked bicycle upright. The project did not reach its crowdfunding goal, according to New Atlas, so the design is an unrealized concept rather than an established current product.
What the concepts reveal—and what they do not
Each design changes a different part of the cycling experience: holding a foot on the pedal, accommodating its movement, carrying security hardware, making a worn platform surface replaceable, or stabilizing a parked bike. The ideas range from relatively direct component changes to a pedal that would carry a lock and alarm.

The 2020 account documents their intended mechanisms and certain historical status and price details. It does not establish current availability or provide comparative testing. It supports understanding what each design set out to do, but not choosing a present-day pedal on the basis of proven results.
