Apple’s new CarPlay widget experience arrives with iOS 26. The best widgets are not the flashiest ones: they answer a driving-relevant question at a glance, stay readable, avoid unnecessary interaction, and provide information that remains useful even when it refreshes periodically rather than continuously.
For most drivers, start with Weather, Calendar, vehicle or EV data, and Clock. Use the fifth slot for a useful Live Activity—such as flight tracking, parking, delivery, or charging status—while remembering that Live Activities are technically separate from ordinary widgets.

Widgets appear to the left of the CarPlay Dashboard. Apple says a suitable small widget can appear in CarPlay even when its app does not have a dedicated CarPlay app, provided the developer supports the appropriate widget configuration and has not marked it as unsuitable for in-car use. Apple Developer documentation explains the requirements.
1. Weather: the best overall CarPlay widget
Weather is the most broadly useful choice. A quick glance can tell you whether conditions are clear, rain is approaching, or snow and severe weather could affect the journey. That is useful on a daily commute and even more valuable on a long road trip.

Choose a simple current-conditions, temperature, or precipitation widget. A dense radar display may be useful when parked, but it is a poor choice for something meant to be read quickly while driving. Location permissions, network access, and iOS refresh scheduling can affect how current the information is.
Apple Weather may be available in your CarPlay widget list. A third-party option such as Weather Widget® / SkyFlip advertises CarPlay support along with conditions, radar, air quality, UV information, and alerts. Availability and features can vary by region and app version.
Verdict: The best first widget for nearly every driver.
2. Calendar: the best productivity widget
A next-appointment widget answers a practical question before you reach for your phone: where do I need to be, and when? It can surface a meeting, school pickup, medical appointment, or other event with its start time and, when available, location.
Prefer a compact “next event” view over a full agenda that requires scanning multiple entries. Calendar locations can be useful for planning, but do not assume that tapping an event will launch navigation. That behavior depends on the app and whether it also provides a CarPlay app.
Check that the relevant calendar accounts are enabled. Also consider privacy: event titles can appear on a shared vehicle display. MoYo is one third-party example whose App Store listing mentions calendar widgets and iOS 26 CarPlay widget support.

3. Vehicle data, EV range, or charging
Vehicle information belongs in a car, but this is a category rather than one universal widget. Depending on the app and vehicle, it may show:
- EV range, battery state, or charging status
- Diagnostics and OBD data
- Trip information or speed limits
- Destination weather, compass information, or other driving data
There are three common implementations:
- Manufacturer-connected data: may require a compatible vehicle, account, subscription, region, or connected-services plan.
- OBD-based data: requires compatible hardware and setup, and should not be treated as identical to the vehicle’s official dashboard.
- Third-party estimates: can be useful, but range depends on speed, temperature, elevation, weather, and climate-control use.
Pelican advertises CarPlay vehicle widgets, OBD data, range overlays, speed limits, weather, and compass information. Its usefulness will depend on your car, hardware, permissions, and the features supported by the app.
Avoid a layout packed with gauges. If you need to interpret several numbers, the display has stopped being glanceable.
Verdict: Essential for some EV and OBD users; unnecessary if your vehicle already presents this information clearly.

A clock sounds basic, but simplicity is an advantage in CarPlay. A large, high-contrast local-time display can be easier to read than a small system clock, particularly on a vehicle with an awkward screen layout. A second time zone is useful for cross-country travel or coordinating with people elsewhere.

Use one large local clock unless a second time zone solves a genuine problem. Avoid animated faces, low-contrast designs, or decorative layouts that make the time harder to recognize at night.
Apps such as WiGet and CarWidget advertise customizable clocks and other dashboard widgets. These apps can be useful for personalization, but paid tiers and subscriptions may apply, and visual customization is not required for functional CarPlay widgets.
Verdict: The best minimalist option when your car’s clock is hard to see or you regularly cross time zones.

Technical note: Live Activities are not ordinary widgets. Apple treats them as a separate feature that can appear in the CarPlay Dashboard or notifications, while widgets occupy the widget area beside the Dashboard. They belong on this list because they provide the same kind of glanceable, changing status that many drivers want from a widget.
Useful examples include:
- Flight progress or delay information during an airport trip
- A parking-session countdown
- Food or package delivery status
- EV charging progress
- Ride pickup information
- Other time-sensitive app activity that supports Live Activities
Availability depends entirely on app implementation. A normal notification is not automatically a Live Activity, and an activity may appear automatically rather than being manually added through the CarPlay Widgets screen. Apple describes Live Activities as appearing in the CarPlay Dashboard or notifications.
Verdict: The most useful fifth option for travel and time-sensitive tasks, but label it accurately.

If you want five formal widgets only
If your definition of “widget” excludes Live Activities, use this lineup:

- Calendar or next appointment
- Vehicle data, EV range, or charging
- Clock or time zone
- Reminders or a custom dashboard widget
The fifth slot is less universally useful than a Live Activity. Reminders can help with errands, while a custom dashboard app can provide photos, logos, themed clocks, or other designs. Choose it only if it improves your real driving routine rather than adding decoration.
How to add and arrange CarPlay widgets
Configure widgets on the iPhone while parked—not from behind the wheel:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Drag widgets to reorder them.
- Use the remove control to delete unwanted widgets.
- Optionally enable Smart Rotate or Widget Suggestions.
See Apple’s official CarPlay widget setup guide for the current interface. The number of available widget stacks depends on the vehicle’s CarPlay screen, so layouts will differ between factory systems, aftermarket receivers, small displays, large displays, and deeper integrations such as CarPlay Ultra.
A widget can appear without a full CarPlay app. Conversely, having a widget does not guarantee that tapping it will open a complete interface in the car. Apple says app-launch behavior depends on whether the associated app also supports CarPlay. Apple’s WWDC25 session explains the relationship between widgets and CarPlay apps.

This keeps the display focused on conditions, the next obligation, and time.

- Clock
- Charging Live Activity, if supported
Use range as an estimate, not a promise. Navigation, temperature, terrain, speed, and HVAC use can change the result.
Airport pickup
- Weather
- Calendar
- Clock
- Flight Live Activity
- A navigation-related option, if available
A flight Live Activity is most valuable when the app provides it; installing an app does not guarantee that it will appear in CarPlay.
When a widget does not appear or update
The Widgets menu is missing
Check these items in order:
- Your iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Your vehicle or receiver supports the relevant CarPlay widget interface.
- You selected the correct vehicle profile under Settings > General > CarPlay.
- The app is installed and updated.
- The app exposes a CarPlay-suitable small widget.
- CarPlay is disconnected while you change the settings.
If the option remains missing, restart the iPhone and vehicle system, then reconnect. Do not assume every iOS 26-compatible vehicle exposes exactly the same layout.
The app has an iPhone widget but not a CarPlay widget
An iPhone widget alone is not enough. The developer must support the relevant widget family and may mark a widget as unsuitable for in-car use. Other possibilities include no available slot, a required premium tier, missing permissions, or the app not yet refreshing its widget extension.
The widget is blank or stale
- Open the source app once while parked.
- Check relevant location, calendar, Bluetooth, vehicle, or notification permissions.
- Check Background App Refresh where the app requires it.
- Remove and re-add the widget.
- Restart the iPhone and reconnect CarPlay.
Ordinary widgets should be treated as glanceable information, not guaranteed real-time telemetry. Avoid relying on a stale weather value, vehicle estimate, or appointment display without confirming it safely when parked.
How to choose widgets without adding distraction
Rank candidates using five questions:
- Driving relevance: Does it answer a question you actually have in the car?
- Glanceability: Can you understand it in a brief glance?
- Freshness: Does the information remain useful if it refreshes periodically?
- Interaction burden: Does it avoid scrolling, menus, and reading?
- Privacy and reliability: Could passengers see sensitive data, and is the source dependable?
Native or established functional widgets should usually come before photos, logos, novelty graphics, or subscription-based themes. Widgets are designed to reduce unnecessary app switching, but they do not remove the need to keep your attention on the road.
Optional customization apps
Custom dashboard apps are optional, not a requirement for iOS 26 CarPlay widgets. WiGet’s US App Store listing advertises a free tier and a Pro plan with recurring prices; CarWidget also lists premium in-app purchases. Prices and availability can change by region and over time, so check the current App Store listing before subscribing.

They are a poor first purchase if all you need is weather, your next appointment, or vehicle status. A wireless CarPlay adapter also does not guarantee widget support; the feature depends primarily on iOS, app support, the vehicle, and the receiver’s implementation.
Final verdict
Install Weather, Calendar, and Clock first. Add vehicle or EV data if it is relevant to your car, then use a supported Live Activity for a flight, parking session, delivery, or charging event. That combination is more useful than filling the screen with decorative panels—and it remains flexible enough for different cars, displays, and driving routines.
