The available examples support four candidates, not the ten promised by the original title: the Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220, Renault Avantime, Lancia Thesis, and RUF RTurbo. Treat them as cars to investigate, not as a complete or ranked list.
How the 25-year calendar works
For the age-based federal threshold discussed here, a car’s actual build date matters. A 2001 model-year label alone does not prove that a particular car qualifies; check its manufacturing date and confirm the applicable requirements for the year you plan to import it. Some Opel Speedsters began production in July 2000 and may already have crossed the threshold, while examples built in 2001 reach it at different points during 2026. The available source does not establish exact build dates for every example of the other models.
The four vehicles below are drawn from an Autoblog article. Its descriptions and specifications are editorial claims, not independent inspection or testing results.

Opel Speedster / Vauxhall VX220
Production reportedly began in July 2000 and continued until 2005. The car combined a Series 2 Elise chassis with GM’s 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder, according to the source. Because production started before 2001, a specific example may have crossed the age threshold already; check its own build date rather than assuming all 2001 cars become eligible on the same day.

Renault Avantime
The Avantime’s two-door body and grand-tourer/minivan character make it an unusual alternative to more conventional European cars. The source mentions a 3.0-liter V6/manual combination, but does not give the production month for specific 2001 examples. The car’s build date must therefore be confirmed individually.
Lancia Thesis
Production began in 2001, and the model is described as an Italian luxury midsize sedan available with straight-five or V6 engines and manual transmissions. The source favors a five-cylinder turbo/manual version, but that is the author’s preference. A 2001 production start does not establish when any particular Thesis reaches the age threshold.

The source lists coupe and convertible bodies, manual and automatic gearboxes, rear- and all-wheel drive, and 520/550/590 hp configurations. Confirm the car’s identity and manufacturing date before treating it as an eligible candidate.

Age-based safety treatment
The age rule is tied to the vehicle’s actual age and build date; it does not mean every import restriction disappears. A model-year designation is not a substitute for documentation establishing when the specific vehicle was manufactured.

EPA emissions requirements
EPA says its emissions requirements apply to imported vehicles. For a nonconforming vehicle, the agency describes import through modification, testing, and certification by an Independent Commercial Importer, or through specific exemptions that require pre-approval. EPA also notes an over-21-year engine-equivalence interpretation and advises prospective importers to contact its Imports Hotline about that provision. Customs duty guidance
In an April 2, 2025 notice, U.S. Customs and Border Protection listed covered passenger vehicles and light trucks manufactured in a year at least 25 years before the year of entry under classification 9903.94.04 with a 0% additional ad valorem rate. The same notice described a 25% additional rate for covered vehicle imports generally. These are dated tariff terms, not a complete calculation of duties, taxes, fees, or shipment-specific charges; verify current CBP treatment and consult a customs broker before buying or shipping. Before you commit to a car
- Get evidence of the build date. Request documentation for the individual vehicle and verify that the date—not merely its model year—meets the applicable threshold for the planned entry year.
- Confirm the car’s exact identity and specification. This is especially important for the highly customizable RUF RTurbo and for cars with multiple engine or transmission variants.
- Resolve EPA treatment before shipping. Ask EPA’s Imports Hotline how emissions requirements apply to the specific vehicle and whether an importer, modification, or pre-approved exemption is required.
- Check current customs charges and logistics. Ask CBP or a customs broker about the current tariff treatment and all charges that may apply to your shipment. Arrange shipping, customs brokerage, and compliance support as separate matters to investigate.
- Research local ownership support. Parts availability, service expertise, and registration requirements can vary by model and by U.S. state; establish those details for the specific car and destination before purchase.
