4 Common Problems With the Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford notices identify four specific F-150 Lightning problem areas, but none is established to affect every truck. Here’s what the notices say and how to check a VIN.

Ford has documented four distinct problem areas affecting certain F-150 Lightning trucks: a high-voltage battery fire risk, a 12-volt battery-monitor issue that can interrupt over-the-air updates, charging schedules that may not save, and a charge-port actuator condition that can prevent DC fast charging. These are VIN-specific recalls or service programs—not problems established to affect every Lightning. Ford’s records do not show how often owners experienced each symptom or rank these as the four most common failures. Check a truck’s VIN and repair status before drawing conclusions from its model year.

Which Ford F-150 Lightning problems have been documented?

Ford’s notices and service bulletins describe defined conditions in particular vehicles. A program’s affected-vehicle population is not a count of confirmed failures, and eligibility by model year alone does not establish that a specific truck is affected.

Problem area Vehicles identified in Ford documents What the document describes Stated action
High-voltage battery short and fire risk Certain 2022–2024 vehicles An internal short may occur after repeated charge and discharge cycles, increasing fire risk. Ford’s April 2025 notice recommended an 80% charge limit until replacement battery arrays were installed; check current, VIN-specific instructions.
12V battery monitor sensor and OTA updates Certain 2022–2023 vehicles The sensor may under-report 12V battery capacity during an over-the-air update, preventing the update from completing. Dealer inspection and replacement of specified sensor part numbers at no charge for covered vehicles.
Charging schedule settings Certain 2024 vehicles Charging locations and times may not save, although the truck can still charge when plugged in. Powertrain control module software update at no charge for covered vehicles.
DC fast-charge port actuator 123 affected U.S. vehicles listed in Ford’s 2024 CSP 24B14 If 12V battery voltage drops below 9 volts, the charge-port actuator locking pin may not fully extend, preventing DC fast charging. Charge-port actuator assembly replacement at no charge for covered vehicles.

1. High-voltage battery short and fire risk

Ford’s April 2025 safety notice describes a possible internal short in certain 2022–2024 Lightnings after repeated battery charge and discharge cycles. The short can increase fire risk. The notice is a safety recall for eligible vehicles, not evidence that all trucks in those model years have the condition. Ford’s battery-recall notice said owners should avoid charging to 100% and recommended limiting charge to 80% until replacement battery arrays were installed. Ford did not instruct owners to stop driving in that notice. Because guidance and repair status can change, use the instructions currently associated with the specific VIN rather than treating the 2025 notice as automatically current for every truck.

2. A 12V battery-monitor issue can disrupt OTA updates

Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 23B70 concerns certain 2022–2023 trucks. During an over-the-air update, the battery monitor sensor could randomly report less 12V battery capacity than was actually available. An update might then fail to complete. Ford instructed dealers to inspect the sensor and, where specified part numbers applied, replace it at no charge for covered vehicles. This concerns the low-voltage monitoring system and update process; it is separate from the high-voltage traction-battery recall. Ford CSP 23B70 lists 35,069 affected U.S. vehicles. That is the program’s listed population, not a tally of failures or a failure rate.

3. Charging locations and schedules may not save

Ford CSP 24B48 describes certain 2024 Lightnings that cannot save charging locations and times. The bulletin says the vehicle may still charge normally when plugged in, so this setting problem is not the same as a charger failing to deliver power. Ford’s stated remedy for covered trucks is a powertrain control module software update at no charge. Ford CSP 24B48 identifies the condition and service action; it does not establish that every 2024 Lightning has it.

4. A charge-port actuator condition may block DC fast charging

Ford CSP 24B14 covers a limited population of certain 2024 vehicles. If 12V battery voltage falls below 9 volts, the charge-port actuator’s locking pin may not extend fully, and DC fast charging may be unavailable. Ford specified replacement of the charge-port actuator assembly at no charge for covered vehicles. The bulletin lists 123 affected U.S. vehicles; that figure is the service-program population, not the number of confirmed failures. See Ford CSP 24B14.

How to check a Lightning before buying or arranging service

  1. Find the VIN. Use the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, not just its model year or trim, to identify applicable actions.
  2. Check Ford’s recall and support information. Search the VIN in Ford’s recall lookup and review the truck’s support record.
  3. Check NHTSA as well. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup for open recalls and its investigation search for related safety information. NHTSA notes that a safety-issue date refers to when it was reported; it is not necessarily the date a recall was published. A lookup is a status check, not a substitute for confirming repair completion with the seller or dealer.
  4. Ask whether the remedy is complete. For a used truck, request documentation showing whether an applicable recall or service-program repair was performed. Do not assume completion from the model year, a seller’s general assurance, or the fact that the truck currently drives.
  5. Describe the symptom and VIN to a Ford dealer. For an incomplete OTA update, charging schedules that will not save, or a DC fast-charge fault, ask whether a relevant field service action remains open and what remedy applies to that vehicle.

How to distinguish a vehicle issue from charging equipment trouble

The Ford notices above document vehicle-side conditions: a battery recall, low-voltage sensor and software behavior, schedule-setting software, and a charge-port actuator. They do not establish that home EVSEs or public chargers are generally defective. If charging fails, note whether the problem follows the truck across different charging equipment or occurs only at one location, then share that detail and the VIN with the dealer. Do not treat replacing a charger as a remedy for a Ford service action.

What the available records do—and do not—show

The cited documents establish that Ford recognized specific conditions and offered actions for defined vehicles. They do not say how many owners actually encountered each symptom, how many eligible vehicles have completed repairs, or whether these are the four most numerous Lightning complaints. Consumer Reports search results surfaced owner comments about charging in cold or bad weather and 12V battery problems, but the underlying pages could not be reviewed directly and the snippets do not support a representative rate or a ranking. Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability page and its 2023 reliability page therefore should not be read here as evidence that any one of these conditions is widespread.
