The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB is planned as a model family with both a battery-electric version and a 48-volt mild hybrid. Mercedes says its modular architecture allows flexibility in drive concept and production—but the company has not said the hybrid is built on the EV’s dedicated battery platform. The distinction matters: the two GLBs share a family strategy, not a confirmed EV chassis conversion.
What Mercedes means by the GLB EV “underpinning” a hybrid
Mercedes-Benz describes the GLB as a modular model family able to accommodate different drive concepts and production. The battery-electric GLB is launching first in the United States, with hybrid variants planned to follow. That supports describing the EV and hybrid as members of a common, flexible GLB family.
It does not establish that the hybrid uses the electric GLB’s dedicated battery platform, battery enclosure, or a modified EV skateboard. Mercedes’ U.S. newsroom puts it this way: “The modular architecture of the GLB model family allows Mercedes‑Benz maximum flexibility in the drive concept and production.” The manufacturer’s wording is about family-level flexibility, not a confirmed shared EV platform.
How the GLB 48-volt hybrid works
The hybrid described in Mercedes’ March 19, 2026 European announcement pairs a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 22-kW electric motor integrated into an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 48-volt lithium-ion battery has up to 1.3 kWh of capacity. This is a mild hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid in the specifications Mercedes has published here.

Electric assistance, coasting and energy recovery
Mercedes says the motor can propel the GLB electrically in some low-demand city conditions, and the car can coast with its drivetrain decoupled. Those modes do not amount to a stated electric-only driving range. Mercedes-Benz USA describes electric propulsion as possible when less than 27 hp is needed; Mercedes-Benz Media’s European announcement describes electric city driving with gentle inputs and electric coasting up to around 100 km/h. These are source-specific operating conditions, not a guarantee that the car will travel electrically in every urban situation.
The hybrid can recuperate energy in all eight gears. Mercedes-Benz Media lists maximum recuperation of 25 kW for the European specification. That is energy recovered during deceleration, not a charging capability for plugging the hybrid into an outlet.

European hybrid configurations announced
Mercedes-Benz Media listed five European versions in March 2026. Their system outputs range from 115 kW/156 PS to 155 kW/211 PS. These are European-market specifications; they do not establish which hybrid configurations, outputs, or equipment will be offered in the United States.

The same European announcement listed German prices starting at €50,396.50 for the GLB 180, with prices varying by trim and drivetrain. That is a Germany-specific starting price from March 2026, not a U.S. price or a current quote for every market.

What is known about the electric GLB
Mercedes-Benz USA’s future-vehicle page identifies the electric GLB as a 2027 vehicle and lists the GLB 250+ and GLB 350 4MATIC. It specifies an 85-kWh battery and an 800-volt electric architecture. The page gives preliminary WLTP range estimates of up to 631 km for the 250+ and 614 km for the 350 4MATIC. These are manufacturer estimates using the WLTP test cycle, not U.S. EPA range ratings.
For the GLB 250+, Mercedes-Benz USA says a compatible 800-volt DC charger can add up to 260 km of WLTP range in ten minutes. That is a stated maximum under compatible charging conditions, not a universal charging result. The U.S. page also describes seating for up to seven, a frunk and the MB.OS/MBUX system. Mercedes-Benz USA says electric GLB owners can use the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox for home charging; that charging option applies to the battery-electric model, not the 48-volt hybrid.

When the electric and hybrid GLBs are expected
Mercedes-Benz USA lists the electric GLB as a 2027 vehicle and says hybrid variants are expected in early 2027. These are U.S. timing statements and may change. In Europe, Mercedes-Benz Media’s March 19, 2026 announcement said the hybrid versions were available to order. European order availability should not be read as U.S. availability.
Which GLB powertrain fits your needs?
The central choice is between a battery-electric vehicle that plugs in and a gasoline-powered mild hybrid that uses its motor for assistance and limited electric operation in specific conditions. To compare versions fairly, use specifications for the same country and model year. In particular, do not compare the electric GLB’s preliminary WLTP range with an EPA-rated range from another vehicle, or apply European hybrid prices and outputs to a U.S. model.

- Consider the electric GLB if you want a vehicle that can be charged from an outlet and can meet your driving needs with the range and charging access available in your area.
- Consider the mild hybrid if you want a gasoline powertrain with electric assistance and do not want a plug-in charging routine. The published operating modes are conditional and do not provide a stated electric-only range.
- Check local specifications before choosing for market-specific price, availability, fuel consumption, seating and drivetrain details. The cited U.S. and European announcements do not provide a directly comparable fuel-consumption figure for the two powertrains.
