In the U.S. lineup, the S 580 is the V8 model; the S 500 uses an inline-six and the S 580e is a plug-in hybrid.
Which 2027 S-Class gets the new V8?
Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class press kit identifies the M 177 Evo V8 in the S 580 4MATIC long-wheelbase saloon. That confirms the fitment that had previously been described as a possible debut. The manufacturer’s press kit gives the engine’s output as 395 kW (537 hp) and 750 Nm. Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class press kit is the source for those global-market powertrain details.
The U.S. range is specified separately by Mercedes-Benz USA. Its May 13, 2026 quick reference guide identifies the S 580 4MATIC as a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 model. The guide’s U.S. S 500 4MATIC uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, while the S 580e 4MATIC is a plug-in hybrid. Those U.S. designations should not be taken to mean that every market has the same lineup or specifications.
What changed in the M 177 Evo?
Mercedes-Benz describes a series of revisions rather than a wholly unrelated engine design. The company lists a refined injection system, optimized intake and exhaust ports, and a revised intake camshaft. It also specifies a flat-plane crankshaft with a new firing order, plus changes to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing.
