In an Ars Technica press-drive report, the author praised its handling; that impression came from a brief drive in Spain, not an independent instrumented test. BMW provided the author’s flights from Washington, DC, and accommodation, a disclosure relevant to the report’s perspective.
What the drive report says about handling
The title refers to the Ars Technica drive report published December 3, 2025. Its central appeal is the combination of engaging road manners and a substantially reworked EV platform. The handling assessment is the author’s subjective impression from the press drive, rather than a measured comparison with rival SUVs. BMW’s travel and accommodation support for the event should also be kept in mind when weighing that impression.
What BMW is launching in the US
BMW identifies the iX3 50 xDrive as the first series-production Neue Klasse model. In the US it is an all-electric sport activity vehicle (SAV) with two motors and all-wheel drive. BMW’s September 2025 US announcement gives preliminary performance figures of 463 hp, 476 lb-ft of torque, 0–60 mph in 4.7 seconds, and a 130 mph top speed. Range, price, and what the numbers mean
BMW’s May 2026 US announcement lists a base MSRP of $61,500, plus $1,350 destination and handling, and estimates up to 434 miles of range. BMW USA lists a 383–434-mile range depending on configuration and cautions that actual range varies with conditions and equipment. European figures should not be substituted for US estimates. BMW quotes up to 805 km under the WLTP cycle for Europe, as well as 372 km added in ten minutes under its stated WLTP charging conditions. Charging and compatibility
BMW describes an 800-volt electrical architecture and peak DC charging capability of up to 400 kW. Its US model page says a 10–80% charge can take 21 minutes when the vehicle receives the maximum charge rate. That is a best-case manufacturer-stated time, not a guaranteed stop duration; charging conditions and the ability of the station to supply the peak matter. For home charging, BMW says the iX3 includes a Multifunctional Charger for household 120V or 240V outlets and offers an optional hardwired 240V BMW Wallbox. Before buying a 240V Level 2 EV charger for an iX3, verify the connector, the circuit’s capacity, and installation requirements; have a qualified electrician assess a hardwired installation.
What “Heart of Joy” and Panoramic iDrive do
BMW calls its integrated drive and dynamics controller “Heart of Joy.” The company says the system coordinates drivetrain and vehicle dynamics functions; its claims about precision and a more connected driving experience are manufacturer descriptions, not independent findings. How to read BMW’s sustainability claims
BMW says the iX3’s lifecycle product carbon footprint is reduced by more than 30% compared with previous electric BMW models. Separately, BMW Group says supply-chain CO₂e emissions were reduced by 35% during product development. Launch timing and the evidence still needed for a buying comparison
BMW’s May 2026 announcement gave September 25, 2026, as the US launch date. Since local availability can vary, check with a BMW retailer for current inventory. The available figures establish BMW’s stated price, range, charging capability, and performance, but they do not establish that the iX3 is a segment leader. A fair comparison with other premium electric SUVs would need like-for-like data on range by configuration, charging conditions, passenger and cargo space, driver-assistance equipment, and charging access, alongside independent road testing.
